What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Nothing Ever Happens Here is a passion project, built by a singled developer in evenings and weekends. Early Access allows the community to shape the game's direction, provide feedback on systems, and be part of the journey from the beginning.

The game has a clear vision, and a defined roadmap, but player feedback is invaluable in making it the best experience it can be. Early Access is not a shortcut, it is the right way to build this kind of game, with the people who care about it most, involved from day one.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The game is expected to remain in Early Access for approximately 18 to 24 months, with regular updates adding new content, systems and story throughout the period.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version contains the core pub shift loop, the opening story arc, the first Act of the game, and a decent sized open world area to explore, with some areas work-in-progress.

On full release, we plan to add the full pub rebuild system, allowing players to restore every room to its former glory, while allowing complete freedom in how they furnish, decorate and structure the pub. We plan to introduce the car restoration arc, a cast of fully voiced town characters with their own lives and routines, friendships and relationship systems, activities to do with that cast of characters, town jobs and activities and a complete story from arrival to Burntwood, to ending.

We also plan to expand the world beyond the pub itself, deepening the sense of Burntwood as a real living place with its own history and personality.

The full version aims to be a complete life sim experience. Early Access is the beginning of that journey.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version features a fully playable opening act, including the pub shift loop, Grandad's voice performance, a football night event with a power cut sequence, and an open world area to explore. The core systems are stable and the atmosphere and tone of the full game are present throughout.

Some areas of the world are work in progress and will be expanded and polished over the course of Early Access. The game is playable from start to the end of Act 1”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be priced lower during Early Access to reflect that it is an unfinished product. The price will increase on full release, but not dramatically.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We already have an active community prior to Early Access, largely centred around a Discord server where open forums for feedback and suggestions are a regular part of development. Player suggestions have already shaped the game and will continue to do so throughout Early Access.

We plan to maintain that same open approach on Steam - listening, responding, and building Burntwood together with the people who care about it most”

About This Game

Nothing Ever Happens Here is a first-person British life sim set in Burntwood, West Midlands in 2011.

You have just turned 18. You got kicked out of school, fell out with your parents, and ended up with nowhere to go. Your Grandad Henry took you in, gave you a roof above his struggling pub, he's tough on you, but it's only because he cares.

Burntwood is a real town. The pub is based on a real pub. And Grandad Henry? He is the developer's actual grandfather, and voiced by him.

When a series of unfortunate (read self inflicted) events strips Henry of his alcohol license and leaves the pub an empty shell, it falls to you to sort it out. Rebuild the pub room by room, bring it back to the local it once was, and show Henry that taking a chance on you was worth it.

But there is more to Burntwood than the pub. Save up for your first car and get it back on the road. Get to know the locals, build genuine friendships, and find your place in a sleepy West Midlands town where Nothing Ever Happens Here™ but somehow everything does.

Key Features:

  • First person open world life sim set in a real British town

  • A cast of locals with their own lives, routines, and opinions about yours

  • Rebuild a struggling pub room by room, a fully customisable pub

  • Work jobs and hustles around town to earn extra money

  • Restore and drive your first car

  • Build friendships and spend time with the people of Burntwood

  • A story about family, home, and turning your life around

  • Perma death mode for those who want a real challenge

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

The player can drink alcohol, smoke cigarettes, and potentially hurt or kill other characters in the world. This is not encouraged and is heavily penalised.

The game does not glorify or promote murder, violence, excessive alcohol or tobacco use, illegal drug use, or anything else widely considered harmful or morally wrong.

The player can observe characters drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and fighting each other. The player cannot take illegal drugs, but illegal drugs are referenced in the game and characters can be inferred to have taken them, though this is never directly depicted.
