What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We chose Early Access to gather player feedback and improve the overall gameplay experience. As a strategy-focused Mahjong game, balancing mechanics, AI behavior, and player interaction is essential. Early Access allows us to refine these systems with real player input while continuing to expand the game's content and presentation.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect the game to remain in Early Access for approximately 6 months. This may change depending on development progress and community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to include additional visual effects, animations, and polish across the entire experience. This includes win animations, character interactions, voice feedback, and improved UI presentation.

We also plan to introduce features such as achievements, cloud saves, improved AI difficulty, better controls (keyboard and controller support), online matchmaking, and a more comprehensive tutorial for new players.

Overall, the full version will offer a more refined, content-rich, and polished gameplay experience.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version provides a complete and playable core gameplay experience. Players can enjoy the main Mahjong mechanics and game loop.

However, some features such as advanced animations, UI polish, sound enhancements, and additional systems are still in development and will be added over time.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We may increase the price after Early Access as more content and features are added. Players who join early will be able to get the game at a lower price while supporting development.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to actively involve the community through feedback, discussions, and player suggestions. Player input will help us improve gameplay balance, AI behavior, and overall user experience.

We will continue to update the game regularly based on community feedback and development progress.”

About This Game

17 Steps combines tactical mahjong, revolver roulette, and roguelike adventure.

Choose a 13-tile ready hand from 34 tiles, then use your next 17 discards to outplay your opponent. Win a hand, load your revolver, and take the shot.

Read the table. Build around your relics. Choose your route. Every hand brings you closer to victory—or the end of your run.

34 Tiles. One Hand. Your Strategy.

At the start of each round, both players receive 34 randomly dealt tiles. Choose 13 tiles to form a ready hand: a hand waiting for one more tile to win. The remaining 21 tiles become your discard pool.

Once confirmed, your hand stays fixed for the round. Aim for a higher score, choose waits your opponent is likely to hit, and leave yourself safe tiles to discard.

Every tile you choose shapes the decisions that follow.

Win on Your Opponent's Discard

No tile draws, self-draw wins, or calls to claim tiles. Players take turns discarding from their own pools, with up to 17 discards each.

Your goal is to make your opponent discard a tile that completes your hand. At the same time, you must decide whether your next discard could complete theirs.

Use the discard history and tile counts to weigh attack against defense. If both players reach their seventeenth discard without a win, the round ends in a draw.

Win a Hand. Load Your Revolver. Take the Shot.

The winner loads live rounds into their own revolver, then fires once at their opponent.

Higher-scoring wins mean more ammunition. A single winning hand may end the encounter with a gunshot. An empty click sends both players back to choosing their next hands.

Drawn rounds also add ammunition to both guns. Loaded rounds carry over, making the next shot increasingly dangerous.

Raise the gun. Hold your aim. Squeeze the trigger. All your planning comes down to this moment.

Choose Your Route Through a Seven-Layer Adventure

In single-player mode, follow a seven-layer branching map through ordinary opponents, elites, and a final boss, with random events along the way.

Your current layer, visited nodes, and scouted encounters remain visible. The starting encounter and final boss are revealed from the outset; other encounters lie behind the fog. Gather information through scouting events before choosing where to go next.

Opponents bring different play styles and special rules to the table. Decide which branch to follow, how much risk to take, and what resources to save for the boss.

Build Your Run Around Relics

Defeat opponents and take part in events to acquire relics. Combine effects that change your ammunition, cylinder, information, and chances of survival.

  • Traffic Light: Discard Characters → Dots → Bamboo in order to build stacks and earn milestone rewards. Its red, yellow, and green lights illuminate as you progress.

  • Miyoshi's Glimpse: May reveal information about the suits or honor tiles in your opponent's wait, helping you judge your next discard.

  • Chairman's Scheme: Complete a dora pair with a single-tile wait to gain extra ammunition on qualifying wins.

  • Single Path: Turns your remaining route into a single line of battles and grants an extra life.

  • Damp Primer: Guarantees a misfire when your opponent fires with two or fewer live rounds loaded.

Relics give you new reasons to change your approach. Play defensively, build firepower, or follow a specific discard sequence to grow stronger. Try different combinations across your runs.

Twelve Events. Resources Worth Thinking About.

Random relics, relic trades, purchased information, cylinder adjustments, and consumable repairs are among 12 event types. Choose whether to participate or skip before committing.

Gold earned during an adventure funds event trades and other spending within that run. When you clear the run or fall in battle, your unspent gold transfers to your permanent wallet, where it can buy lasting upgrades for future attempts.

Spend for an advantage now, or save for your next run?

Challenge the AI or Face a Steam Friend

Take on AI opponents in single-player adventures. Refine your reads, defense, and relic combinations as you work toward higher difficulty cycles.

Or invite a friend through Steam online multiplayer and face each other across the table.

Tutorials and hand-pattern explanations help you learn the rules. The archive records your discovered relics and battle statistics as you play.

Classic Hand Patterns and Last-Minute Comebacks

The standard winning threshold is 4 han or more. If your hand falls short and the encounter allows hidden dora, those bonus tiles are revealed for a chance to raise your score. Reach the threshold and win; remain below it and the round is a draw.

Build around familiar Japanese mahjong patterns such as Riichi, Pinfu, All Simples, Seven Pairs, value-tile triplets, Half Flush, and Full Flush. Aim higher with limit hands such as Thirteen Orphans, Four Concealed Triplets on a pair wait, and Big Three Dragons.

Dora, red dora, and hidden dora keep the possibility of a comeback alive within these short rounds.

Seven Languages

Supports Simplified Chinese / Traditional Chinese / English / Japanese / Korean / Spanish / Russian.

If you enjoy reading the table, choosing your risks, and building strategies across a changing adventure, take your seat in 17 Steps.

Choose your thirteen tiles. Take your seat. Make your seventeenth move.
