What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The game is playable from the first scene to several endings, and we are still building the world as we develop it. We are releasing in Early Access to grow the story, the locations and the illustrations together with player feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to stay in Early Access for roughly 3 to 6 months, depending on the feedback we receive.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The final version is planned to be a longer game: more locations, side quests, characters, endings and illustrations, plus bug fixes and balance changes based on feedback. It is in our plans to add this content, but we do not promise specific features or dates.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is a playable story with multiple endings, a character codex, a lore codex, many illustrations and a soundtrack. It is shorter than the planned final game, and some areas, quests and illustrations are still being added. Small bugs, typos or rough edges may remain.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“It is not our plan to change the price when the game leaves Early Access. If we add a lot of content, we may raise it slightly.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will read Steam reviews and the discussion forums, post update notes in the Steam news, and use player feedback to decide what to fix and what to add next.”

About This Game

A fire that answers to no spell

The Flame and the Sword is a story-rich fantasy visual novel about fire, memory and the people nobody counts.

Sera is a second-order arcanist in the Tower of Valdra, and the keeper of a dangerous secret: inside her burns a fire that obeys no spell, only emotion. When a wounded knight reaches the Tower with news that a whole city has fallen silent, she is drawn into a conflict older than the kingdom itself.

North of Valdra, the city of Storn has not been destroyed. It has been emptied. Its people stand in the streets with open eyes and nobody behind them. The Shadow Mage who holds it hums a lullaby that you will start to hear in your own head.

What you will do

  • Shape the war and the person you become. Every choice moves relationships, resources and a corruption meter that changes how Sera looks, sounds and chooses.
  • Seven endings, from a hard-won true ending to a fall into the dark, plus many small epilogues that depend on who you saved along the way.
  • Explore a living world of hubs and side quests: the capital Valdra, the Arcanists' Tower, the Temple of Araneth, the River Port, the Poor Quarter and the Ash Yard, Millhaven, the Dorn Forest, the ruins of Storn.
  • Gather allies in unlikely places: a goblin village in a giant tree, a centaur herd, forest witches, scholars, smugglers, dockers, healers, and a washerwoman who finds a song that heals.
  • Build up an infirmary under a bridge. Help Tobin, Alma, Wick, Marta, Rudd and Pell turn a camp of the forgotten into a ward the whole city depends on. Their stories change how the final battle plays out.
  • Fall in love, or don't. Relationships, friendships and rivalries grow over time. Romance is warm and character-driven, handled with fade-to-black.
  • Collect the world. A Characters codex (50+ entries) and a Lore codex (places, faith and myth, magic, peoples, history) fill in as you learn the truth about the void, the Weaver and the cycles that repeat every eighty years.
  • Manage coins, potions and mounts. Visit Tessaly's shop, ride a stubborn donkey, drink an Ember Elixir before the final fight.
  • Fully illustrated: 150+ painted-style backgrounds, character sprites and full-screen illustrations.
  • Original-feeling soundtrack with themes for the city, the forest, romance, the void and the finale.

At a glance

  • A complete story that keeps growing: new locations, quests and illustrations are added during Early Access
  • 7 endings and many branching side quests
  • 50+ characters, 39 lore entries, a corruption system, an economy and an inventory
  • Single player, keyboard, mouse or controller
  • Skip, auto-forward, rollback, save anywhere

"Magic is not fire. Magic is the choice of what to burn."
