Why Early Access?

“Closer than Allowed: After the Bell is entering Early Access because Episode 1 is playable, and we want player feedback while we finish the remaining core episodes. Visual novels live or die by pacing, choice clarity, character chemistry, and route payoff, so Early Access gives us a way to improve those parts with real player reactions before 1.0.

Our first priority is completing the planned twelve-week base story across Episodes 1-3 while refining UI flow, save/load usability, scene pacing, CG presentation, and relationship feedback. The game will launch with English text first, and we also plan to evaluate additional localization after release based on player interest and production schedule.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Early Access to last approximately 7 to 9 months. This estimate covers development, testing, and release of the planned Episodes 2 and 3, along with polish toward the 1.0 version.

The schedule may change depending on development progress, QA, Steam review timing, and feedback during Early Access. If the timeline changes, we plan to communicate updates through Steam announcements and community posts.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan for the full version to include all three core episodes, covering twelve weeks of story across four heroine routes. Our current 1.0 goals include multiple endings per heroine, a completed CG gallery, improved relationship and choice feedback, quality-of-life improvements, additional outfits, and bonus illustrations that fit the game's mature romantic tone.

We also plan to evaluate Steam achievement integration during Early Access. If achievements are implemented and tested successfully, we plan to include them in the 1.0 release.

Final scope may change as development continues, but our focus is the base game: the four heroine routes, branching choices, polished presentation, and a complete emotional arc for each route.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Episode 1 is fully playable. It includes the complete prologue, Weeks 1 through 4 of the main story, introductions to all four heroines, early route branches, origin selection with 10 regional backgrounds, save/load functionality, core UI, music, character art, backgrounds, and CG presentation.

Episodes 2 and 3 are currently in development and are not included in the initial Early Access build. The core gameplay loop, writing style, art direction, and presentation in Episode 1 are representative of the quality target for the final release.

Players should purchase the Early Access version based on the current playable Episode 1 content and the development approach described here.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We do not plan to change the price when the game leaves Early Access.

Players who purchase during Early Access will receive base-game updates through the 1.0 release at no additional charge.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will help us improve pacing, choice clarity, route balance, UI readability, save/load usability, bug fixes, and overall presentation throughout Early Access. We plan to collect feedback through Steam reviews, Steam Discussions, patch note comments, and optional community channels.

We may use polls to help prioritize quality-of-life improvements, outfit ideas, bonus illustrations, and side moments that fit the game's mature romantic tone. The core story direction will remain with the development team so the planned twelve-week narrative stays consistent.

We plan to share development updates, patch notes, and progress posts during Early Access. When players report bugs or suggest improvements that meaningfully help development, we may credit them in patch notes or credits with their permission.

The launch version supports English text. We plan to evaluate additional localization after release based on player interest, production schedule, and translation resources.”

You arrive at Hargrove, an adult alternative education program in the United States, surrounded by students trying to rebuild their lives on their own terms. Everyone here has a wall: a past they do not explain, a rumor they ignore, a family they left behind, or a secret life they keep hidden.

All romanceable characters are 18 years of age or older.

Closer than Allowed: After the Bell is a mature romantic visual novel about emotional distance, second chances, and the choices that turn friendship into something harder to walk away from. Expect lingering glances, late-night conversations, complicated trust, and routes where small decisions can change the ending.

Four Heroines. Four Walls to Understand.


Emma Clarke - The girl who can barely meet your eyes in class. Behind the oversized hoodies and quiet apologies is an online world where she becomes someone else entirely. What happens when her secret life and yours collide?

Noelle Beaumont - Tall, composed, and almost impossible to read. The French transfer reads Camus, plays chess alone, and keeps every emotion under glass. Get close enough, and you may hear what she whispers in French when she thinks no one is listening.

Val Moreno - Flat expression. Fewer words. A record she does not explain. Val acts like she does not care about you, or anyone else. So why does she keep showing up exactly when you need her?

Hargrove is not a postcard campus. It is an adult alternative program for people trying to restart their lives after the usual paths failed them. The setting is intimate, messy, and freer than a typical campus story, but every connection still has consequences.

This is a story for adult audiences, with mature romantic themes, suggestive situations, strong language, and references to difficult personal histories.

Early Access Content Plan


Closer than Allowed: After the Bell begins Early Access with Episode 1, covering the prologue through Week 4. You will meet all four heroines, choose your origin, and begin shaping the relationships that determine your route.

Episode 2 is planned to continue Weeks 5-8, deepening each route as relationships become harder to walk back from.

Episode 3 is planned to continue Weeks 9-12 and complete the major ending paths.

Community feedback will help us prioritize polish, pacing improvements, UI refinements, additional outfits, and bonus illustrations that fit the game's mature romantic tone.

Early Access supporters receive all base-game updates through the 1.0 release at no extra charge.

This game uses pre-generated AI-assisted content in its development.

AI tools were used to help create character sprites, background illustrations, and event CG images. All images included in the game were reviewed, curated, edited where needed, and approved by our team before being shipped. We do not use AI to generate likenesses of real people, and the character designs are original to this project.

AI tools were also used to assist with narrative outlining and dialogue iteration. The final story text, route structure, branching choices, and in-game implementation were edited and reviewed by our team.
