What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Tactorius is already fully playable with a complete core gameplay loop, including spell-based chess mechanics, multiple commanders, and a fully functional skirmish mode.

Early Access allows the game to expand in content and depth based on player feedback, particularly around balance, spell interactions, and strategic variety. Because Tactorius introduces new mechanics on top of traditional chess, real player experience is important to refine and improve the system.

Development during Early Access will focus on expanding the number of spells and commanders, improving the user experience, and continuing to polish the core gameplay systems.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“4-8 months”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Tactorius is planned to expand on the current experience with:

- A larger pool of spells
- Skill tree and enemy spell loadout improvements
- More refined balance and strategic depth
- Improved UI/UX and onboarding
- Additional content and gameplay scenarios
- a complete original OST

Tactorius is designed as a focused single-player and sandbox experience. The Early Access version already includes the full core gameplay systems, and the full version will build on this foundation with more content and polish rather than introducing entirely new systems.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Tactorius is fully playable and includes the complete core gameplay systems. Players can engage with multiple modes: Gauntlet (a replayable challenge mode), Skirmish (commander-based gameplay), Spell Lab (sandbox experimentation), and Training mode (spell reference guide). The game features a wide variety of spells and strategic options, along with quality-of-life features including saved Gauntlet runs and custom spell loadouts. Basic settings and controls are fully implemented. For a full overview of currently implemented features and content, please refer to the "About This Game" section of the store page. Additional content, balance improvements, and UX enhancements are planned throughout Early Access.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features. Early Access represents the best opportunity to get in at the lowest price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will play a key role in shaping Tactorius throughout Early Access. Player input will be used to guide balance changes, refine spell interactions, and influence which new content is prioritized.

Feedback will be gathered through Steam discussions and player behavior data, such as how different spells and strategies perform in real gameplay. Because Tactorius introduces a wide range of unique mechanics, observing how players approach the game is an important part of improving the overall experience.

Updates during Early Access will reflect both direct feedback and observed gameplay trends, with a focus on making the game more balanced, readable, and strategically engaging over time.”

About This Game

For centuries, the war was simple. Move. Take. Win. Then it went quiet. The armies withdrew, and they studied... Meditated... Evolved. The silence is over. What comes back is not what left.

Your mind is the armory.

Tactorius takes the foundation of chess and expands it into a spell-driven roguelite where strategy is created in the moment, not memorized in advance. Every match is shaped by your decisions: what you equip, how you adapt, and what you see that your opponent doesn't.

Over 150 spells let you summon pieces, rewrite their movement, warp the rules, and chain interactions chess never imagined. With 6 spells per loadout and countless combinations, no two matches play the same.

Gauntlet: Defeat all 7 towers and the bosses that guard them. Fight through 80+ unique enemies, earn skill points, and grow your spell tree run by run.

Spell Lab: Experiment with every new spell and piece, then save the loadouts that work.

Modes: A growing set of curated ways to play. Alternate rules, challenges, and matchups that bend Tactorius in new directions.

Training: Learn the pieces, learn the spells, learn what's possible.
