What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Beetle Sumo is entering Early Access so we can develop and test its online multiplayer systems with real players while continuing to refine the existing local multiplayer experience.

The core game and local multiplayer are already playable. During Early Access, we plan to use player feedback and multiplayer testing to improve gameplay balance, controls, user interface, matchmaking and lobby flow, connection stability, and anti-cheat measures. Testing online matches with players using different hardware, networks, and play styles will help us identify issues that cannot be reproduced as effectively through small-scale internal testing.

Early Access will also give the community an opportunity to influence balancing, usability improvements, and overall polish before the full release.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Beetle Sumo to remain in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months, with a target of reaching full release by the end of 2027.

The exact timeline may change depending on the development and testing of online multiplayer, connection stability, anti-cheat systems, gameplay balancing, and feedback received during Early Access. We intend to leave Early Access once the planned online features are implemented and the game has reached an appropriate level of stability and polish.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The primary difference planned for the full version is the addition of online multiplayer. We plan to add the ability for players to create or join online matches and compete remotely, rather than being limited to local multiplayer on the same computer.

During Early Access, we also plan to improve the multiplayer interface and lobby flow, address online stability and connection issues, refine gameplay balance, and continue improving the user interface, controls, audio, visual presentation, performance, and overall polish based on testing and player feedback.

The core game and local multiplayer experience are already playable in the Early Access version. We intend for the game to leave Early Access once online multiplayer has been implemented and tested and the overall game has reached the level of stability and polish expected for the full release. These plans may be adjusted in response to technical testing and community feedback.

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version currently includes the complete core gameplay loop and functioning local multiplayer. Players can play complete matches against one another locally on the same computer using the gameplay systems and content described in the “About This Game” section.

The current build includes the advertised local gameplay, player controls, match rules, playable content, menus, audio, and visual presentation. The game is playable from the beginning of a match through its conclusion.

Online multiplayer is not currently available and is the primary major feature still under development. The Early Access version may also contain bugs, balance issues, interface elements that require further refinement, and other areas that will receive additional optimization and polish during development.

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. The game will always be free to access although we may add other paid in-game features within the game at later stages.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Players will be able to share feedback, bug reports, balancing suggestions, and feature requests through the contact options on our website.

During Early Access, we plan to review feedback relating to online multiplayer stability, matchmaking and lobby usability, controls, beetle and gameplay balance, interface clarity, and general performance. Community reports will help us prioritize bug fixes and identify areas requiring further testing or refinement.

We also plan to communicate significant updates through Steam announcements and patch notes so players can follow the game’s development and see how Beetle Sumo changes throughout Early Access.”

About This Game

Knock your friends off the table as battling beetles in a fast 1–8 player ring-out party game. Easy to learn, chaotic to watch, and built for instant rematches.

Beetle Sumo is a party game based on the Japanese festival game of Kabutomushi Sumo” (カブトムシ相撲) often translated as Japanese rhinoceros beetle sumo.

In Japan, kids (and hobbyists) will pit kabutomushi (rhinoceros beetles) or stag beetles (kuwagata) against each other in a small arena, where they:

  • Lock horns (literally)

  • Try to push the other beetle off a platform

  • “Win” by knocking the opponent out of the ring — just like sumo

Play with 1-8 players in a competitive fast-paced ring-out sumo game where the goal is always to be the last beetle standing!
