What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Topidia: The Last Badge is a non-profit academic portfolio project that showcases the talents of our team and the dedication poured into its development. Launching in Early Access, we seek to engage with the community, gather feedback, and enhance the player experience.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect to complete the project during this calendar year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The game is currently in Alpha and early access. While the gameplay mechanics and character designs are at an advanced stage and considered final, there is still room for improvement based on feedback. Importantly, the term 'early' refers mainly to the amount of content, player progression, and the refinement of systems such as UI and visual feedback.

Right now, players can:
- Dive into the heart of our core mechanics: walk, jump, dash and use two different hooks.
- Experience the captivating look and feel of the game firsthand.
- Enjoy a vibrant original soundtrack.
- Try out two distinct player skins: Tyler & Emily.
- Explore three thrilling sections of the mine.

In the full game version, we plan to implement improvements based on feedback, particularly for the UI, and introduce an extra secret level designed as a speed run through the mine halls. New mine sections with additional environmental hazards will be added, along with new badges and a broader range of rewarding achievements for players to unlock.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is in an Alpha and early access state at the moment. It means it has a full demonstration of its main features. All of them are in an advanced state that will be enjoyable for players.

Within the current version, players can:
· Discover four different sections of the mine.
· Choose between two different skins for the player.
· Collect three badges to unlock: the dash and two different kinds of hooks.
· Walking: Lateral movement across the ground and different platforms.
· Jump: Vertical movement over a specific set distance; it can only be used once before touching the ground.
· Dash (offensive/defensive) with cooldown: Fast horizontal movement, both on the ground and in the air, with a set distance.
· Grappling Hook: The main mechanic that allows the player to launch a hook toward specific positions established by the map, enabling the player to latch onto them. It will also be used for puzzle elements.
· Pressure Plate Interaction: Pressure plates are distributed throughout the levels.
· 90º Camera Rotations: Used in specific pre-established locations and areas.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Topidia: The Last Badge will be free throughout Early Access and upon its official release. We focus on demonstrating the skills of our team's work and use this game as a portfolio.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We intend to engage with the community through X, Bluesky and Steam forums, actively soliciting and incorporating player feedback to refine the game before its official release.”

About This Game

Put yourself in the shoes of children eager to explore and push their limits to earn all their missing badges. To do so, they will venture into an apparently abandoned mine, where they will discover immense dangers, a society of moles unwilling to give up their mineral so easily, and puzzles they must solve to advance toward their ultimate goal: Topidia mineral!

The experience:

For this experience, the goal is to have movement that feels smooth and versatile, while maintaining a pace that is not too fast. The focus is on navigating the scenario, the player’s interaction with it, and the use of the grappling hook.

  • Walking: Lateral movement across the ground and different platforms.

  • Jump: Vertical movement over a specific set distance; it can only be used once before touching the ground.

  • Dash (offensive/defensive) with cooldown: Fast horizontal movement, both on the ground and in the air, with a set distance. It is used both to continue progressing through the environment and to stun enemies.

  • Grappling Hook: The main mechanic that allows the player to launch a hook toward specific positions established by the map, enabling the player to latch onto them, serving as the central axis from which the player swings. It will also be used for puzzle elements, allowing the player to drag objects or enemies and pull doors/bridges or levers to continue progressing.

  • Pressure Plate Interaction: Pressure plates are distributed throughout the levels, which are required to open doors, progress, or interact with platforms. To do so, the player must place an object or enemy on them.

  • 90º Camera Rotations: Used in specific pre-established locations and areas.

Especial features:

  • Camera: This project includes a 90° rotating camera at specific points during gameplay

  • Hook mechanic: This is the most important pillar in the game. The player can use it for platforming or puzzle solving. The goal is to implement all the core mechanics around the hook.
