What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“At its core, OFFBEAT wants to offer an entry point to music production that's approachable, playful and funny. We have an idea in our minds about what that looks like, but to be the best game it can possibly be and one that people will want to both play and use to create music, we want to build it in concert (ha) with our players. The main creative challenge with this game is balancing complexity with accessibility - we want deep tools that enable expressive production, but we also want anyone to be able to pick the thing up and figure it out as they go without feeling overwhelmed. We're a small team (just 3 people!) and so it's important that we get as much feedback as we can, as early in the development process as possible. Early Access offers us the opportunity for this dialogue.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We're aiming for an Early Access period of around 6-8 months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to release monthly updates for OFFBEAT throughout its Early Access period which will introduce new instruments and tasks to the game along with other features both based on the EA roadmap (to be released at a later date) as well as community requests. The full game release will include all this content along with features and improvements that won't be present during the EA period.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access release contains 10 musical objects (7 instruments and 3 effects), which you can purchase across three chapters. This represents the first three chapters of the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, OFFBEAT will be launching into Early Access at a lower price point than the eventual 1.0 release. Specifics will be communicated closer to the time of release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“- Prioritising fixes and features based on community feedback gathered through Steam forums, Discord and socials
- Sharing regular development update through devlogs
- Listening to the community for feature requests
- Highlighting community creations
- MORE”

About This Game

The year is 198X, and you're a jobbing composer. You start out with nothing but a toy keyboard shaped like a tiger, and a brand new sequence-o-matic 4-track that your uncle bought from a shady geezer in the pub.

Word quickly spreads about the new producer on the block, and soon the commissions are rolling in. Things start humble, recording tracks for weddings, workout videos and corporate presentations, but before long you're getting asked to score fantasy movies, museum openings, and all kinds of crazy stuff.

Of course, you'll have to upgrade your kit along the way. Turns out, the local second-hand magazine is a treasure trove of objects that make interesting sounds, from singing garden gnomes and shredders-that-shred-sound-as-well-as-paper, to high-end synthesisers and musical effects. By the end, you'll have figured out a sound that's all your own.

But OFFBEAT isn't just a game. All the musical instruments are fully simulated, and the music you're recording is real. The game is secretly a complete audio production tool. Every piece of music you create in the game gets exported and saved locally on your computer as a WAV file, which you use for whatever you want.

Music production can be costly and complex to get into, especially for beginners. We created OFFBEAT to lower barrier to entry and to offer a playful, low-pressure way to learn the basics of audio producion. The goal is just to be expressive and experimental, but by the end you'll have learned a little about synthesizers, sound design, composition and recording. Our hope is that when the game's finished, you'll have the confidence and expertise to carry on composing and recording music.

  • Game meets a real audio production tool.

  • Accept jobs, compose music, earn money.

  • Browse the Riches & Rags Catalogue to buy new synthesizers, then get Electric Lacey to upgrade and mod 'em.
