What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Bunker Rats already has a complete core extraction loop, but I believe real players are essential to making it the best game it can be. Early Access gives me the opportunity to see how people approach melee combat, team play, progression, hazards, and the economy in ways I could never reproduce by testing alone.
I want to build upon the game alongside its community, learn what feels rewarding or frustrating, and use that feedback to guide balancing, onboarding, map design, networking, performance, and future development priorities.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“As a solo developer, I currently expect Bunker Rats to remain in Early Access for approximately 12 to 18 months. This estimate may change depending on player feedback, testing results, and the amount of work required to properly develop and polish additional content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand the game with additional bunker complexes featuring different layouts, hazards, loot, and resource tiers. I would also like to broaden crafting and progression, add more equipment and customization, and continue improving balance, onboarding, controls, networking, performance, and quality-of-life features.
My goal for the full version is a larger and more polished version of the game available in Early Access, rather than a fundamentally different game. Specific plans and priorities may change as I learn what works best through development and community feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version includes a home bunker and one fully playable extraction complex. Bunker Rats is an online multiplayer game designed for up to 12 players. Players can enter shared sessions solo or form teams before deploying. There is no offline single-player mode.
Players collect loot, fight using melee weapons, survive escalating environmental hazards, and attempt to extract with their equipment. The current build includes inventory and storage management, crafting, weapon and suit upgrades, an armory shop, character progression, unlockable emotes, proximity voice chat, and persistent currency and equipment. Environmental gas and electrical hazards currently provide the PvE pressure rather than AI-controlled enemies.
Players should expect limited map variety, unfinished balancing, bugs, and possible networking issues, particularly at player counts that have not yet received extensive testing. Progression and the economy may be adjusted during development, and major changes could require progression resets.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. Bunker Rats is free to play, and I plan for it to remain free to play during Early Access and after its full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to communicate with players through Steam Discussions, announcements, and patch notes throughout Early Access. Players will be encouraged to report bugs, networking and performance problems, balance concerns, confusing mechanics, and feedback about maps, combat, progression, and the economy.
I will pay close attention to recurring feedback and use it alongside testing results to help prioritize updates. Not every suggestion will fit the game, but I want community experiences to play an important role in deciding what needs improvement and where my development time is best spent.”

About This Game

About Bunker Rats

Bunker Rats is a free-to-play, online-only PvPvE extraction game set entirely inside decaying underground bunkers.

Up to 12 players prepare in a shared home bunker, organize into squads of up to four, and deploy into the same hostile complex. You can enter solo or work with a squad, but everyone is searching for limited supplies and trying to reach extraction alive.

Every item matters. Search abandoned rooms, open sealed containers, and decide how long you are willing to remain underground. The more you carry, the more you stand to lose.

Combat is close and unforgiving. There are no guns and nowhere to fight from a safe distance. Crowbars, axes, machetes, improvised weapons, and work tools become the difference between escaping with your haul and leaving it behind for someone else.

Other players are not the only threat. Toxic gas, electrical faults, extreme temperatures, and deteriorating conditions make the complex increasingly dangerous as a match continues. Bunker Rats does not currently feature AI-controlled enemies. Its PvE pressure comes from surviving the bunker itself.

Successful extractions provide resources for crafting, equipment upgrades, and long-term progression. Between matches, manage your storage, assemble a loadout, improve your protective suit, and prepare for the next deployment. If you die inside the complex, the gear and loot you were carrying remain behind and can be taken by another player.

The Early Access version currently includes one fully playable extraction complex. Additional complexes, equipment, resources, and progression are planned as development continues.
