What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I want to make the ultimate Orienteering and Hiking simulator. I believe previous attempts at this genre struggled because they relied on hand-made maps—everyone wants to run on a cool map, but few have the time to make them. By using procedural generation, I can offer infinite terrain.

As a software and AI developer, I am leveraging modern LLM workflows to build this rapidly, but I need to know if there is an audience sharing my vision before committing to the full scope. I believe the core game is already fun and captures the feeling of the sport, so I am releasing it now to gather feedback while I continue development.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I expect to be in Early Access for 3 to 6 months. While the initial development has been rapid thanks to modern tools, the roadmap for advanced simulation features (hydrology, infrastructure, weather) is significant.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand the simulation depth and visual fidelity significantly. Key features on the roadmap include:

- Advanced Terrain: Hydrology (rivers/lakes), roads, paths, cliffs, and boulders.
- Infrastructure: Buildings, fences, powerlines, and man-made objects.
- Atmosphere: Time of day, dynamic weather, and improved sound design.
- Social Features: Integrated map sharing, leaderboards (First Run vs Best Run), and ghost replays of other players.
- Technical: Controller support, local split-screen, and larger seamless map borders.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The core loop is fully functional. You can generate billions of unique maps with IOF-standard contours and 9 different vegetation density layers. You can race Sprint, Middle, or Long distance courses, or create custom challenges. The Replay System is also fully implemented, allowing you to analyze your route choice after every run.

Visually, the game uses standard assets and is functional but basic. Expect the graphical fidelity to improve over time.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to gradually raise the price as I ship new content and features. I believe the current price reflects the game's state today, offering infinite replayability at an entry-level cost.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I encourage players to share feedback, map seeds, and bug reports in the Steam Community Hub. I will be active there to discuss which features on the roadmap should be prioritized next.

Hope to hear from you!

/Acoped”

About This Game

The wilderness is waiting. The map is your only guide.

Infinite Orienteering: The Hiker's Path is a realistic navigation simulator that captures the essence of the sport. Dropped into a procedurally generated forest with nothing but a compass and a topographic map, your goal is simple: find the fastest route between control points.

There are no trails to follow. Every ridge, every swamp, and every thicket is a choice. Do you climb over the hill to save distance, or is it faster to run around it? Do you bushwhack through the dense green forest, or take the longer route through the open pine woods?

Endless Exploration

Powered by procedural generation, no two races are ever the same. The game creates unique terrain, vegetation, and water features on the fly, ensuring that you can never memorize the map. Every race is a fresh test of your navigation skills.

Key Features

  • Infinite Maps: Generate billions of unique, open-world environments and courses. Share map seeds with the community if you find a map you like.
  • Standard Mapping: Navigate using authentic topographic maps featuring accurate contours (5m intervals), vegetation density layers, and magnetic north lines, just like a real orienteering event. In the long run we're looking to include most map elements of the International Orienteering Federation's Mapping standard and follow their guidlines closely.
  • Realistic Navigation: Use your compass to take bearings and your map-reading skills to interpret the terrain, transferable to the real-life skill of navigating with map and compass only.
  • Race Your Way: Choose from Sprint, Middle, or Long distance courses, or customize the difficulty to match your skill level. Beat the clock, or go for a nice stroll, your choice.
  • Replay Analysis: Watch your route after every race. Analyze where you lost time, where you nailed a shortcut, and how you can improve for the next run.

For Hikers, Runners, and Navigators

Whether you are a veteran orienteer looking to train your map memory in the off-season, or a hiker who loves the peace of the virtual outdoors, Infinite Orienteering offers a pure, uncompromised simulation of movement through nature.

Lace up your boots. The clock is ticking.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

AI has been used to enable the solo developer to generate code faster and speed up development significantly. It has also been used to generate the main art for the store page.
