What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“StoneSpace is an ambitious, deep, large-scale crafting game intended to take the player on a long journey through the entire history of technology, starting with the most basic stone tools and ultimately leading to space flight. While all the core gameplay systems are now fully integrated into a playable experience, there is still a great deal of that journey left to build.

Releasing in Early Access means that rather than waiting until the entire technology tree is complete, players can begin at the start, explore the existing world and crafting progression, and return as the game expands to include new resources, environments, technologies, and increasingly advanced crafting mechanics.

It also gives players the opportunity to help shape StoneSpace as I develop it. As the game grows in scale and complexity, player feedback will be invaluable for balancing its grounded approach to crafting with a rewarding gameplay experience, identifying areas that are too repetitive or unclear, refining existing mechanics, and highlighting other issues that are difficult to spot through solo development and small-scale playtesting alone.

The aim is for the Early Access version to be both a substantial game in its current state and an opportunity for players to influence StoneSpace as it grows, helping me realise that vision as effectively as possible.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I expect StoneSpace to remain in Early Access for approximately 1–2 years.

As a solo developer working on an ambitious, large-scale game, disruptions to progress are always a potential risk, so this is an estimate rather than a fixed deadline. The development timeline may also change as player feedback informs development, leading to additional fixes, adjustments, or refinements along the way.

Throughout Early Access, I plan to expand the game incrementally, allowing players to advance further through the technology tree as new content is added, rather than holding back the remaining content until the full release.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Building on the foundations of the Early Access version, the full release is planned to be substantially larger in scale and length.

Most significantly, I plan to extend the technology tree all the way from the primitive crafting available at the beginning of the game to the advanced technologies needed to complete the player’s journey. This will mean adding hundreds of additional craftable items, new resources, and increasingly advanced crafting mechanics.

I also plan to expand the world with additional biomes to explore, each with distinct environments and new resources to discover.

The full version is also intended to include the complete story of StoneSpace, building on the introduction presented in the Early Access version, including more about the planet and its history, how the player came to be stranded there, and their journey home.

Alongside these major additions, existing content will continue to receive graphical improvements, balancing, mechanical refinements, bug fixes, and other changes informed by player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of StoneSpace is a fully playable experience with all of the game’s core systems implemented and working together.

Players can explore a vibrant, diverse world, gather resources, craft items, level up their skills, construct buildings, and progress through the currently available technology tree. The game also includes full inventory and storage systems, day/night cycles, and the introductory elements of the story.

The main limitation of the Early Access version is the scale of its content. The game currently covers the beginning of the planned journey through the history of technology, with the game ending once players reach the end of the currently available technology tree. Additional technologies, biomes, resources, crafting mechanics, and story content are planned to extend that journey incrementally throughout Early Access.

Existing systems and content are also subject to balancing, refinement, and bug fixes as development continues and player feedback is received.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. I plan to increase the price of StoneSpace as the game grows in scale throughout development, with the full release expected to be priced higher than the initial Early Access version to reflect the substantially greater amount of content in the completed game.

Players who purchase StoneSpace during Early Access will receive all subsequent updates, including the full version when it is released, without any additional purchase required.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will be crucial to StoneSpace’s ongoing development throughout Early Access. As a solo developer, there are limits to what I can discover through my own experiences and small-scale playtesting, and hearing from a much wider range of players will provide invaluable insights, especially as the game grows.

StoneSpace includes prominent links for providing feedback and reporting bugs directly from the title screen and pause menu. I also plan to post regular development updates through Steam, discussing additions and changes to the game and actively inviting players to share their experiences and suggestions. Players can also reach me through StoneSpace’s growing social media channels.

I am particularly interested in feedback on gameplay balance, progression, clarity, and the overall experience. One of StoneSpace’s central design challenges is balancing its grounded, detailed approach to crafting with an enjoyable and rewarding gameplay experience, avoiding unnecessary grind or repetition without compromising the game’s core concept. Player feedback will be extremely useful in finding that balance.

Feedback will also help identify bugs and usability issues, evaluate new mechanics and content, and inform graphical and mechanical refinements throughout development.

While StoneSpace has a clear overall vision and direction, I want the experiences of the people actually playing it to help shape how that vision is realised.”

About This Game

Development status

StoneSpace is currently in active development. Expect regular updates to graphics, systems, and gameplay as development continues. Follow along here on Steam for dev logs and progress updates.

Start with NOTHING… Craft EVERYTHING

StoneSpace offers a pure, comprehensive crafting experience. As the lone survivor of an ill-fated starship, stranded on an alien planet with nothing but the clothes on your back, you’ll embark on the ultimate crafting project to build a vessel that will carry you home. To do that, you’ll have to master everything from pottery to metallurgy, from farming to astroengineering. Go on a journey through the entire history of science and technology, from flint tools to nuclear reactors, navigation computers, and rocket fuel.

Start with nothing

In this game, you’ll start with nothing. And I really mean nothing. No wreckage conveniently strewn around a crash site to get you going, no fancy multi tool, no 3D printer – not even a map or a backpack. You’ll start from scratch, and craft everything yourself.

Grounded crafting system

The crafting in StoneSpace is grounded in the concepts and processes underpinning real-life engineering. Want a wooden plank? You’ll need to make an axe, fell a tree, trim the branches, hew a log from the trunk, debark it, split it along fault lines into rough flitches, and sand them smooth. Want a metal ingot? You’ll need to dig a mineshaft, light it up, erect supports, extract mineral-rich chunks, break those down to find nuggets, build a smelter, process lime, use good fuel, maintain the right temperature, and deal with the waste slag. Every material, tool, and process follows the same logic – no magic shortcuts, no hand-waving.

This is not a survival game

There’s no combat, and no hunger or thirst meters to babysit. You won’t be hunting animals for resources. You don’t even have a health bar. Just explore, gather, craft, and advance toward your final goal.

Quality of life

Pin recipes to the HUD, save your favourite items, search for things by name, build anywhere, rotate buildings, plan your base before committing resources, recycle what you no longer need, quickly move, drop, and organise items with shortcuts – all the best quality-of-life features from your favourite crafting games are included.

Key features

  • Exploration – Overcome environmental hazards and natural obstacles on your journey through multiple biomes, from forests to mountains and beaches.

  • Crafting – The heart of the game. Create hundreds of items across a dozen categories, from pottery to metallurgy to astroengineering.

  • Base building – Choose build sites, deposit materials, and erect structures to unlock new crafting stations.

  • Skills – Level up to increase your crafting speed and other stats.
