What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Wellspring is a creation platform, and platforms get good by being used. The core is playable now, but the tools, the balance, and the workflow for building worlds will get a lot better with real GMs and players beating on them. I'd rather develop alongside a community than guess in a vacuum for another year. Early Access also lets people support the game while it grows, which makes a real difference when it's just one person building it.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 18 months. I'm one person, so I'd rather give a wide estimate and beat it than promise a date and miss it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to keep expanding every part of the toolkit: more content in the editors (companions, summon spells, expanded crafting, guild systems), more options for the rules engine, quality-of-life improvements to hosting and module management, and polish based on what the community actually struggles with. The idea is for 1.0 to be the version where a new GM can sit down and build a full world without fighting the tools. Scope may shift as I learn what players want most, which is kind of the point of doing this in Early Access.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is stable and playable right now. With the free Guest Client you can join any hosted game. Owning Wellspring lets you play Workshop modules solo, and also build your own through the in-game editors, host sessions for up to 16 players, and publish to the Workshop.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. Early Access is priced lower as a thanks to early supporters, and I plan to raise the price at full release as the game grows in content and polish. If you're in early, you keep everything, including all future updates.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Directly, since it's just me. I read the Steam forums and Discord, and I prioritize based on what builders and players actually run into. Bug reports shape the patch schedule, GM feedback shapes the editor roadmap, and good ideas from module creators have a way of becoming official features. Updates come on a regular cadence with notes on what changed and what's next.”

About This Game

Build a living RPG world, then invite people in.

Wellspring is an online world-creation engine in the spirit of classic MUDs and deep roguelikes. Host a persistent server that stays alive while you sleep, run a one-shot adventure for friends, or craft a full single-player campaign. Everything is built in-game, with no code and no external tools.

Your friends don't need to buy anything to play in your world. The free client lets anyone join a hosted game. They install it, connect, and they're in.

What You Can Do

  • Build entire worlds. Create maps, races, classes, items, NPCs, monsters, encounters, and events through in-game editors.

  • Host online sessions. Run games for up to 16 players on persistent servers that keep living between sessions.

  • Play solo. Explore community modules from the Steam Workshop at your own pace.

  • Share through the Workshop. Publish your world as a module, or download adventures made by others.

Not a Campaign, a Platform

Wellspring ships with a tutorial world that teaches you the ropes, but the heart of the game is what gets built with it. Every module is a world someone dreamed up: persistent realms, one-shots, linear campaigns, sprawling dungeons, experimental hubs. Yours can be next.

The rules engine is data-driven, so you can tune classes, formulas, and systems to fit your world without ever writing code.

ASCII & Tileset Modes

Each module can offer one or both visual styles, and players can switch on the fly.

  • ASCII mode. Clean, fast, pure old-school soul.

  • Tileset mode. Grid-based sprite visuals, with support for custom art.

No artist? No problem. The built-in ASCII set carries the whole game, so creators can focus on design and world logic.

One Game, One Price, Free Friends

Wellspring is a single purchase. No editions, no DLC, no subscriptions. Buying it gives you everything: the creation tools, hosting, solo play, and Workshop publishing.

The Guest Client is free forever, so anyone can join your world without paying a cent.
