What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We want to develop this childhood life experience with players and make it feel more natural and enjoyable. Everyday activities, celebrations, and memories of growing up are already playable, but we need feedback on what is worth replaying, how friends respond to shared experiences, and the pace of daily life. During Early Access, we plan to use that feedback to shape the controls, character interactions, and content priorities.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We currently expect Early Access to last approximately 6–12 months from its launch. During this time, we plan to refine the core activities, character interactions, and progression based on player feedback, and improve stability and performance on target hardware. This is our current estimate and may change as we receive feedback and development progresses. We will explain any changes through updates on the Steam Community.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to refine the feel and pacing of replayable activities such as marbles, deepen friends' responses to shared experiences and interactions with everyday objects, and adjust guidance, day progression, and celebrations based on feedback. Character movement and contact with objects, visuals, voices, and performance are also areas we intend to refine. The scope and priorities may change as development and player feedback evolve, and we will explain those changes in the community.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version is a Windows single-player game played with keyboard and mouse. Choose a boy or girl, explore neighborhood streets, home, school, village and travel locations, and take part in marbles, paper planes, card games, sharing snacks, and other everyday activities. Representative days cover life after school, school days, the Mid-Autumn Festival, New Year dumplings and staying up with family, summer trips, and memories of meeting old friends as an adult. Simplified Chinese and English interfaces, subtitles, and voices are available, and progress is saved locally. Activity pacing, character presentation, audio, and hardware performance are still being refined. Please use the current store description, gameplay footage, and free demo to decide whether to buy now.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to keep the current base price throughout Early Access and modestly increase it for the 1.0 full release to reflect the expanded content and improved level of polish. Any price changes will be announced in advance. Players who have already purchased the game will not need to buy it again.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We plan to collect feedback and issue reports through Steam Discussions, and explain changes and progress in update announcements. Tell us which activities you want to play again, which characters or moments bring back your own childhood memories, and where guidance, waiting, or controls feel uncomfortable. When reporting a problem, please include the location, steps, hardware details, and screenshots where possible. We will consider feedback when setting priorities, but cannot promise to adopt every suggestion.”

About This Game

Please understand the current state before buying

Chinese Childhood is still a playable idea prototype. Many details of its activities, character animation, visuals, sound, and interactions have not yet been polished, and you may encounter rough edges or bugs. Please try the free demo to judge the experience as it is today. Once Early Access is available, consider buying only if you value the existing content, want to support the project, and can comfortably afford it. Please do not buy solely on the expectation of future updates. There is no pressure to purchase: playing the free demo and sharing honest feedback helps the project too.

Tell me what you enjoyed and what did not work for you. For issue reports, please include the game version, location, steps, and screenshots where possible.

Take the long way home, one more time.

After the school bell, the important things could be as small as a glass marble, a few coins for the corner shop, or Mum calling you home before dark.

Chinese Childhood is a single-player childhood life game set around 1998 in a fictional small town in central Anhui, China. Hand-painted HD-2D streets, familiar friends, and little everyday responses bring back moments that once felt ordinary.

Stay and play with your friends

Aim, adjust your power, and flick a marble. Watch it collide and roll toward the pit, then wait for a friend's turn. Practice first, or agree to play for keeps with your friends: the marbles you win or lose really change what is in your pocket. Try paper planes, card games, and other childhood activities. Join in, watch for a while, put something down, or come back later. Your friends remember what you actually did.

An ordinary day in town

Walk between the corner shop, school, neighborhood courtyards, and home. Choose a snack, pour soda into a cup for a friend, sit down to dinner, and wrap a new schoolbook. Tomorrow brings a classroom, a deskmate, and a break by the school tap. Check the map and directions whenever you like, or wander on your own.

Small choices leave an echo

Neighbors have lives of their own. Stop for an encounter, help out, or simply watch and move on. Return a borrowed toy, invite a friend to your birthday, or decide how to say goodbye. Choices, pocket money, belongings, and relationships carry into later moments and conversations.

Turn to another page of memory

Follow everyday life into changing seasons and family celebrations: New Year visits, making dumplings together, village life, summer trips, and memories of meeting old friends again. Choose a boy or girl and spend a little more time in that world after school.

Simplified Chinese and English interfaces, subtitles, and voices. Played with keyboard and mouse. Progress is saved locally.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Generative AI assisted the creation of some environment, character, prop, and store artwork, which was selected, processed, and integrated during development. AI tools also assisted parts of the code, writing, and pre-generated audio production workflow. Content is prepared during development and shipped with the game; no generative AI service is called during play.
