What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Death & Taxes is a major undertaking for an indie studio, and we want to bring it to you as unencumbered as only an indie studio can. With your help, we can bring this project to life without all the strings that come with a major publishing deal. ”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“If all goes as planned, the game will be in Early Access for 6 months to 1 year while we finish the last planned elements and any community elements that are introduced. ”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early access is planned for when multiplayer functionality is added and will be considered early access until we can be sure the game is stable enough to be considered a release title. In addition, full launch is planned to have 1 full developer built dungeon for players to explore. ”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current state of the game is a single player demo. The planned early access launch will include a full continent to explore, a fully buildable faction and two NPC factions.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The pricing model will be the same for Early Access and Full Launch. Players will require gold to be a part of a faction.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Death & Taxes has an active discord community from it's origins as a Table Top game and we involve the community in shaping the game a great deal. Player suggestions have changed mechanics and shaped the lore of the world. We want to continue that tradition with the Death & Taxes Multiplayer RPG.”

About This Game

Immersive Gameplay

In Death & Taxes, the realms of D&D and the video game universe entwine to create a never-before-seen experience. Traverse through the depth of gameplay where your every strategic choice weaves the story of your adventurer. Join forces with others to overcome the trials of this ever-evolving world, or go forth on your own to craft a unique destiny.

Throughout your odyssey, mold your adventurer with each fate-defining decision. Every action taken uses energy and increases a skill, growing your character in some way.  Each skill has a corresponding ability that builds as you master that skill.  Continue to grow those abilities, making you stronger, smarter and more adept, until your inevitable demise.

But it does not end there...  In Death & Taxes, what you do in life, echoes beyond. For in this hardcore, permadeath RPG, your character's passing is but a new chapter. The glory you earned in life will fuel your continuing journey after death, until you rise again.

Rich Lore

Deep game lore developed over years of gameplay as a Table Top RPG has built an entire world for new players to discover, explore and develop.

As you don the mantle of a nomadic adventurer, the canvas of this world unfurls before you, steeped in shadows of discoveries and secrets long buried by the hands of time.  You slowly learn through discovery of artifacts and ruins within the area, the history and the fate of those that came before you, and the place of the adventurers within that story.  And very soon after, you may discover that the threat still looms to this day—a harrowing prophecy of doom that calls out to the adventurers of our age, waiting to be rewritten.

What is Death & Taxes?

Death & Taxes is an RPG like no other.  With origins as a Virtual Table Top game, it has the gritty feel of old school D&D but with mechanics designed for continuous, open world, video game play.  In Death & Taxes, everything you do matters, in this life...and in the next.  For your character will die in this hardcore, permadeath RPG.  But Death is not the end.

In this living world, players will group up to build their cities, collect resources and improve their characters, altering the landscape along the way.  Gather, Craft, Build, Explore and Fight your way across the untamed land, bringing civilization with you. Through your efforts, you will discover that this land is much older and with a history far deeper than you could have possibly imagined.

Become a trader, a hero, a legend...even a god. In Death & Taxes you can pursue anything...but only two things are certain.

The Death of D&T

  • Endgame Reinvented - In Death & Taxes, Death is your endgame!  We're not running around and racking up numbers for nothin'.  When the life of your character ends, for some players, this will be just the beginning.  Everything you do in life will result in power in the Afterlife.

  • Become a god - Influence players and other factions, build labyrinths to your glory and shape the very land itself.  It is the ultimate goal for any power hungry adventurer.  Will the people on your world love you, worship you...or fear you?

When I die, do I start over?

Not completely.  You will have the option to create a new character in your existing faction after death.  Your decedents will be able to access your faction bank to collect their inheritance.  Plus anyone can loot your corpse, and your will have the general advantage of knowing where you died.  In addition, you will receive all the benefits that your faction has built up, making progression just a little bit easier.

The Taxes of D&T

This game is intended to be Free to Play with the primary monetization method being the sale of in game gold.  This gold is spent principally on taxes to your faction.  Outside of some very specific situations, all taxes collected by your faction in gold will be used by your faction to grow, affording players all sorts of benefits to help their characters grow.  The more progressed the faction, the more quickly a newly arrived character can get up to speed.

Why Taxes?

Lets face it, an online game requires income to continue to exist.  The Tax system is a unique approach that is not quite a subscription model.  It allows players to pay for the game by spending money or time.  You can either spend some time in game farming up materials to create and sell goods and use that gold to pay taxes, or you can just spend some money to pay your taxes and buy some of the things people are selling, spending less time.
