What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Null Anchor has been my passion project for nearly 6 years. I have lots more to add to it, but while I move towards the full version, I intend to keep the game fully playable at every step.

Should the game achieve any success in early access, it would also help me spend more time working on it. If this fails, however, development will just continue at the current slow pace - as it has been for almost 6 years.

The plan is to pull a "No Man's Sky" with continued updates:
1. Release to early access with all current features as a fully playable stable game - basically the current feature set, but with bugs and kinks sorted out. Mainly saving/loading needs to be sorted out.
2. Release updates over the coming months/years until completion of my feature list. - Each new update will remain fully playable, just like Hello Games have achieved.

I have so far achieved an update to alpha at least once per year for 5 years.

Upcoming features (Order may change):
1. Estate agents and building ownership.
2. Shop ownership and manufacturing.
3. A third flyable ship. And more to be added along with feature updates from time to time
4. A weapons update adding at least 4 new weapons. And later updates from time to time.
5. Get multiplayer RPG mode running.(Note, this will be an MRPG, not an MMORPG.)
6. Ship customization update - paint and name your ship.
7. Ship recovery - recover and rebuild your beloved wreck. Visit a scrapyard to scavenge parts.
8. New areas on the map to be released along with features now and then - WoW style.
9. Dynamic economy and better AI trading.

Testing and feedback has been happening on the game's Discord server for all these years. My community have helped with decisions such as which map area to build next, priority of features as well as reporting bugs and providing inspiration/concept art. This will continue as it has been.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“The plan is to always to make the game fun and playable during each phase in Early Access.
It is unclear how long the game will take to fully complete. If I could do this full-time, I predict a year or two. Part-time could be anywhere from 4-20 years, depending on what life throws at me.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Some stuff to look forward to:
- building ownership
- shop ownership
- manufacturing
- dynamic economy
- better AI
- multiplayer RPG & deathmatch
- more weapons
- more upgrades
- more ships
- wreck-recovery
- new cavern area
- new canyon area
- new ice area
- new desert area
- black-market”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Current features and content:
- 3 craters to explore
- 2 ships - Gypsy and Loggerhead for sale
- 5 weapons
- ship upgrades
- AI: basic movement, trading and combat
- Wreck and cargo scavenging
- Trading, upgrading and repairing at shops
- Mining, then selling ore
- AI taxis
- Police, wanted levels and bounty hunting”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually raise the price as we ship new content and features that were out of the scope of the full version description. If the scope doesn't change, the price won't increase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is welcome to join the Discord server and chat, share ideas and input. Occasionally a poll will be opened to decide on which content to prioritize next.”

About This Game

Your ship can barely stay up. The battery's dead after a few shots. You take the risky jobs. Good money. Bad company. You get a ship people take seriously. You buy your own place. You're finally making it. You open up shop. It's the start of your empire.

Null Anchor is a space-sim-lite set inside a city built in a crater, far from Earth and thoroughly over-populated. Nine million people live in it. You're one of the few with a ship, which means you're one of the few who can leave the ground.

You make a living however the day allows. Haul cargo between traders. Mine ore and sell it. Hunt someone with a price on their head. Strip a downed hull for parts nobody's claimed yet. The riskier the work, the better it pays, because the authorities are watching.

Energy, not fuel

Your ship pulls energy out of the air around it. There's nothing to buy and no tank to fill, but lean on the battery hard in a fight and the receptors freeze over. Then you're sitting under a charging station's light, waiting to thaw, hoping whoever you just shot at isn't better at waiting than you are.

Fights that leave something behind

Five weapons so far, and they don't all do the same job. Some cut straight through shields to the hull. Some shred shields and barely scratch metal. Some do a bit of both. Ships you destroy fall. Their cargo spills across the crater floor and you can hoover it up with a targeting drone, or land and gut the wreck yourself.

Police, bounties and your own record

Wanted lists are posted at police stations. Find your target, bring them down, collect. Shoot the wrong person and your name goes on that list instead, and then the police come for you on sight. Nobody in this city is completely clean. Some people are just better at not being caught.

Build the ship you want

Weapons, shields, cargo pods and batteries, so you can charge faster or hold more. Frames come in three classes, built around agility, armour or speed, so a stripped-down strafing build and a slab of armour that soaks damage are both viable ways to play.

Three craters and counting

Three connected craters to fly and trade across right now, with AI traders, AI taxis and pirates working the same airspace you are. A fourth crater and a cave system are on the way, along with canyon, ice and desert areas.

Bring a friend

Online and LAN multiplayer, with an MRPG mode and deathmatch in development.

Coming during Early Access

Buy a building and get a hangar to dock in. Run a shop out of it. Install manufacturing components that turn ore into ingots, and parts into weapons and engines. Recover and rebuild your own wreck. Name and paint your ship. A dynamic economy, a black market and more ships, roughly one every few months.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Mild violence depicted in the form of ships being destroyed. Pirate factions and the ability to commit theft is present. Ability to trade in illegal goods, such as drugs and thematically(non-real-world) banned substances or devices.
