What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“CubeMate is playable and fun right now: the full 22-level campaign, all five challenge types and Free Play on cubes up to 7×7 are in. What Early Access buys is time with real players before I lock things down: tuning level order and difficulty, finishing the tutorial, and adding weekly challenges, timed modes and special positions based on feedback rather than guesswork. I'm committed to seeing this through and am actively responding to feedback.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 6–12 months. As a solo developer with a day job, I can't give a precise date, but the plan is to ship the tutorial, weekly challenges, macOS and Linux builds, and all planned features within that window.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“A guided tutorial, more campaign acts and levels, weekly challenges on top of the Daily puzzle, timed and special-position modes, macOS and Linux builds, and difficulty and controller polish driven by player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is fully playable. Campaign: four acts, 22 handcrafted levels from 2×2 to 5×5, with progress saved to Steam Cloud. Free Play: cube sizes 2×2 through 7×7, all five challenge types, seeded puzzles you can copy and share, a Daily puzzle with your personal best, and a choice of side. Keyboard, mouse and controller controls are complete. English and Polish. Larger cubes (6×6, 7×7) may have some performance limitations on older hardware.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Not planning to.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Player feedback directly shapes the game. I read all reviews and Discord messages, and community input influences which features get prioritized. Daily and seeded puzzles make it easy to share exact positions, so bug reports and "this level is too hard" arrive with a seed attached. I post dev updates on Steam for major releases. Bug reports and difficulty feedback especially are taken seriously — the goal is to ship the game players want, not just the game I imagined.”

About This Game

Think in three dimensions.

CubeMate puts a chess position on every face of a Rubik's Cube. Twisting one layer changes six boards at once. Your goal is simple to state and hard to do: rotate until every face satisfies the challenge.

Five challenges

  • Check Everywhere – put the opponent's king in check on all six faces.
  • Checkmate Everywhere – deliver mate on every face.
  • Advantage Everywhere – hold a material edge on each face.
  • Equal Position Everywhere – balance the material on each face.
  • Standard Rubik's Cube – no chess, one piece type and colour per face.

Campaign: four acts, 22 levels

Start on a 2×2 and finish on a 5×5. Each act adds a cube size, each level a new position. Pieces are fixed on their cubies, so the same twist that solves one face can break another. Locked levels are open to preview, so you always know what is coming.

Free Play: your rules

  • Any cube from 2×2 to 7×7, any of the five challenges.
  • Pick your side: white, black or random.
  • Seeds – every puzzle has a short code. Copy it, send it, race a friend on the same cube.
  • Daily – one seed per day, the same cube for everyone, with your personal best saved.
  • Quick Play – one click, random everything.

Made for puzzle people

Chess puzzlers, cubers and anyone who likes a clean "aha" moment. No chess mastery needed: the game tells you which faces are solved and glows when you get there. Move counter, undo, light and dark themes, English and Polish.

Controls

Mouse and keyboard, or a controller with on-screen button glyphs. Windows.

Free demo

All of Act I on the 2×2 plus the first 3×3 levels, no time limit. Progress carries over when you buy the full game.
