Why Early Access?

“MADHOUSE is a solo indie project with a massive scope. I’m using Early Access to build a multiplayer community -- since the 4-player versus mode is a core feature -- gather feedback, and continue developing new content over time. My goal is to provide episodic story updates and add to the versus mode with new characters and stages as development progresses. Join the journey as I bring this story to life!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“From the Early Access launch in October 2025, I estimate the game will be in Early Access for approximately 2 to 3 years, aiming for a full release around 2027 or 2028. However, this timeline may adjust based on development progress and community feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“MADHOUSE’s full version is planned to expand both its single-player story mode and 4-player local versus mode. I aim to significantly grow the story mode, potentially doubling or tripling the content featured in Early Access, with more areas to explore, additional enemies to defeat, and deeper story elements to uncover. For the versus mode, my goal is to include a variety of play modes, expand the roster of playable characters with unique abilities, and introduce new stages that are thematically inspired by the story mode but designed distinctly for multiplayer. The exact scope of these additions will depend on development progress and player feedback.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version, launching in October 2025, includes the first arc of the single-player story mode with significantly more content than the demo—at least twice as much to explore. The versus mode currently offers 5 modes of play, a starting roster of 12 characters, 5 stages, and over 35 weapons, providing a solid foundation for multiplayer fun.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The Early Access version is priced low to encourage player engagement. I plan to gradually increase the price as development progresses and new content is added, aiming for a final price that reflects the full game’s value while remaining reasonable. Join Early Access at a lower price and support MADHOUSE’s journey as it grows!

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I’m building a community of active players to help refine MADHOUSE! Join our Discord or Steam forums to arrange versus mode play sessions via Remote Play and share feedback on both story and multiplayer modes. I value your thoughts and plan to use them to enhance the experience as I continue developing the game.

MADHOUSE is a retro horror action RPG with a chibi aesthetic -- a bloody re-imagining of an early 2000s indie cult classic. Blending gritty 90s punk horror with chaos, join Butch on a quest for revenge in search of his wife’s killer, exploring a dreary open world filled with monsters, maniacs, and other twisted characters. Slash or blast your way through enemies in intense, gore-soaked combat, buy guns, gear, and interact with NPCs the town of Grayville, and battle friends in a four-player local versus mode (playable online via Remote Play Together). With edgy themes and retro pixel art, MADHOUSE is perfect for players who crave macabre action RPGs with a punk edge.

Paul Hubans is the developer behind MADHOUSE. With a passion for horror and retro games, he previously directed Night Manor and worked on several other games in UFO 50, a critically acclaimed indie collection by Mossmouth. MADHOUSE features an original soundtrack by esteemed chiptunesmith PaleDeth, known for creating tracker music in the demo scene since the 90s.

Players engage in bloody combat against zombies and other playable characters in a four-player versus mode, with pixelated blood splatter effects, and encounter dark cinematic moments, such as the main character’s wife being killed in the opening cutscene. Despite the cute presentation, the game includes mature themes: strong language (e.g., occasional use of ‘fuck’), depictions of tobacco use (a teenage NPC smokes and requests cigarettes in an optional side quest), which references to underage smoking, a topic that may be sensitive for some players.
