What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I've spent the past two years working on Hex Town to make an interesting, beautiful, and polished multiplayer puzzle game. For the home stretch, I decided to make it available to players who want to be first in line, have their feedback prioritized, and who don't mind running into a bug or placeholder here and there.

I have worked diligently and spent thousands of hours testing, balancing, and beautifying Hex Town. You won't be buying a half-baked prototype, but a full game that could benefit from your kindness and leniency as I patch issues and tweak content.

I don't take this decision lightly, and I am 100% committed to using Early Access in a way that respects your valuable time and trust. Thank you!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I want to release Hex Town ASAP! My plan is to stay in Early Access for 1-3 months based on player feedback, and to fully release before the end of 2026.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Hex Town will look and feel very similar to the Early Access version. The most noticeable changes will likely come from me tweaking level content, adding sounds and visual effects, improving tutorials, and making sure multiplayer runs smoothly.

In the full version, I also plan to add more cosmetic content. Namely, more options for hand cursors, environment details, tile visuals, and lots of new challenges, rewards and unlockables.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The current version includes all features listed in the 'About This Game' section of the store page.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Absolutely. You're signing up to be one of the first players of Hex Town, so it's only fair that you get it at a discounted price. Naturally, the fully-released version will bump up to a price more in line with similar games of this genre.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I genuinely read every bit of feedback and use it to make Hex Town better! There's several improvements that have already been added thanks to player input.

I absolutely love reading about your experience, good or bad! In fact, there's a feedback window that you can open in-game to send feedback directly to my inbox.

There's also a thumbs up/thumbs down button at the end of each level that you can use if you don't have time to send a full message.

You can also jump in the Discord or email me if you prefer.

My goal is to stay true to the spirit of Hex Town while making improvements and adjustments that bring the most joy.

Controller Support

Hex Town was designed and developed with controller support as a high priority. There's something about kicking back with a controller or Steam Deck that makes a game feel especially immersive and enjoyable. I want to make sure you can enjoy Hex Town on your favorite input device, be it a gamepad, handheld, or keyboard and mouse.

I've added extensive button rebinding in the Settings menu in case you don't find some of the controls intuitive. If there's something I missed or a control that doesn't feel right, please reach out or use the feedback button in game and let me know!

FAQ

How do the puzzles (AKA Expeditions) work?

Tiles always merge in groups of 3 of the same tile. Each tile has a type, and each tile type requires a unique pattern of 3 to merge. The merged tile will be 1 level higher than the tiles that created it.

As you progress, you’ll get higher difficulty tasks, new types of tasks, and more bonus tasks. There are 5 tiers to complete, each with their own reward and trophy. Higher tiers grant more and rarer rewards.

How does Hidden Object mode work?

You’ll have a task list which includes several animals to find and photograph. There’s a hint button which will play the animal’s sound, as well as show a large hint circle outline that contains the animal.

Once you find the animal, you’ll open your camera, adjust the focus, and take a picture.

As you progress, the environments get larger and there will be more animals to find. There are 5 tiers to complete, each with their own reward and trophy. Higher tiers grant more and rarer rewards.

Is multiplayer co-op or competitive?

All game modes have cooperative multiplayer. Whether it’s placing and merging tiles or photographing friendly animals, everyone works together to complete shared tasks.

What’s the difference between single player and multiplayer in puzzle mode (AKA Hexpeditons)?

Each level starts with a ‘deck’ of tiles that get distributed amongst all players at the start. Whether it’s 1 or 4 players, the rules and number of tiles remain the same. Multiplayer means you’ll need to communicate and work together to plan your merges, but you’ll also have playable tiles to work with, since each person can hold 5 in their hand.

What’s the difference between single player and multiplayer in Hidden Object mode)?

Multiplayer is nearly identical to single player in Hidden Object mode. The only difference is that any player can take a photo and complete the shared tasks, instead of just one.

How does the 3-star system work?

During each level, you have the potential to earn a bronze, silver, or gold star by completing Required Tasks and Bonus Tasks. Silver and gold stars both add an additional reward to your loot chest, and gold stars are required for certain achievements.

Are all puzzle levels solvable?

All puzzle levels have at least one optimal solution, meaning you are guaranteed to be able to complete all Required and Bonus tasks.

How long does the average level take?

A: Most levels take ~5-15 minutes each to solve, with the highest difficulty puzzle levels taking ~10-20.

About This Game

Every level brings a unique assortment of tasks to complete. Place and merge tiles using patterns that you’ll discover along the way. Plan ahead, find optimal solutions, and earn rewards that you’ll use to build your Homestead.

In addition to merging tiles, there is a relaxing Hidden Object Mode where you can enjoy searching for cute animals and photographing them in beautiful surroundings.

Play Hex Town single player or multiplayer with up to 4 players. It’s the perfect way for puzzle lovers and cozy gamers alike to zone out in a quiet world with gentle progression.

Every tile has a type and a tier. Place three tiles of the same type in the right pattern, and they'll merge into a single tile one tier higher. Chain merges to create higher tiers and complete tasks.

Every level adds a small checklist of tasks to complete. If a placement doesn't work out, grab the pickaxe to return a tile to your hand, or restart the level to chase a perfect run.
