What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Our team is looking for feedback! While Crown & Capital is designed to support education and financial literacy curriculum, we've seen that it's fun for general audiences, too. We want to make the game as fun as we can for everyone.

We are specifically looking to see:
  • Is the gameplay supporting financial literacy learning?
  • Is the gameplay loop engaging, and do players want to return to it?
  • What kind of content would players like to see next? Ex. New Events, More Purchasables, etc.

Among any other feedback that players might have to offer.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Development will be on pause through the rest of 2024. We are aiming to pick up production again at the start of 2025, have a substantial update by March 2025, and release later that year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are planning for the full version to contain significantly more content. The plan is for players to experience an entire in-game year (i.e. from the 15th of March in 831 to the 1st of March in 832); currently, they should be able to play from the 15th of March in 831 until the 15th of September in 831. We are hoping to add autumn and winter-specific events as well as two new shops unlocked during autumn. We plan to add more art polish, including new animations and details. We are also hoping to give the player more opportunities to customize the town, including options like deciding the color of their castle and whether or not they play as a Lord, Lady, or Liege. We are also planning on adding audio including music and sound effects.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently, players are able to play through the first six months of the game. This means that they should be able to navigate through the tutorial and budget for their kingdom over the course of 12 total turns. There are several shops to purchase wants and needs from, including basic grain, luxury foods, and rent. Players can encounter several events that will force them to adjust their budgeting and spending. There are also multiple ending states depending on the player's choices throughout the half of the year. The game saves between each two week period, so players will be able to exit and come back at another time. There is currently no audio in the game.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, we plan to raise the price of the game in its complete release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are aiming to receive a lot of feedback from the Community about Crown & Capital. We will also respond to any questions and comments we receive here on Steam. We will also post updates about the game's development when we pick it back up in 2025 on the Steam forums.”

About This Game

The previous king has wasted away all of the gold from the treasury on frivolous goods, and the kingdom has fallen into disrepair. Now that you have been crowned ruler, managing the finances of the kingdom is your responsibility!

Control Your Kingdom’s Happiness and Reputation

As ruler, your decisions have an impact on the world around you. Keeping your townsfolk happy is critical to staying in power. Your subjects are mostly concerned with your ability to take care of their most basic needs. However, from time to time, even the most loyal subject will want for some fun and games to be as happy as can be!

Your reputation among the neighboring kingdoms will determine how your name goes down in history. Other rulers care little for your basic needs; they want to see how you will spend on extravagances beyond just what you need to survive.

Don't Miss a Payment!

Mismanaging your monthly expenses can have disastrous consequences. If you don’t take care of your bills they will pile up and cause expensive problems to occur for you to pay your way out of.

Crown and Capital is built to support state and federal financial literacy curricula for learning how to plan out and commit to a budget. While the game can be played singleplayer, it also supports play in a facilitated classroom setting.

Cover Your Needs

Every month you must ensure that you have set aside enough gold to cover your necessary costs – a castle loan, grain, wood, horse stabling, and tribute. These needs are mapped to realistic monthly costs one should prepare for – rent, food, utilities, transportation, and insurance.

Manage Your Wants

To truly impress your neighbors, you’ll have to strategize around purchasing different goods around town. Hire entertainers to keep your townsfolk happy, acquire goods from distant lands, feast on all sorts of exotic foods, and more!

Plan for the Future

Large upgrades to the kingdom will take several weeks or months of saving before making such a commitment. Consistently setting small amounts aside from week to week will help to save enough for such major purchases.

Prepare for the Worst

Even the best of planning can’t count for emergency situations and unexpected expenses. Unpredictable events may occur each week demanding that you always keep something set aside for rainy days.
