“A fun, open-ended procedurally generated playground wherein you can play both in space and in the dirt. Awesome stuff.”

What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I consider Rodina to be in "ongoing development". This means that I will keep adding new features and game content, even after the game comes out of Early Access.

Many Early Access games have a set feature list and definite end-point. This is not the case for Rodina, which is more reminiscent of games like Minecraft and Dwarf Fortress, where you could imagine features being added forever, and designations like "Released" and "Beta" are somewhat arbitrary.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“As I mention below, I'm currently working on a Roadmap which will take me out of Early Access. This Roadmap will likely take me through 2019.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“My current Roadmap is to implement Xeno Ship Boarding. This milestone will focus heavily on varied content, polished features, and more progression and goals, so once it is complete, Rodina will hopefully be rich enough to take out of Early Access.

Over the long run, I aim towards making Rodina a "Daggerfall in Space".”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Rodina is currently a "full game" in the sense that it is meant to be played from start to finish, and that there are minimal bugs. You can explore the entire solar system, fight with hundreds of enemy Xenos (both in FPS and Ship combat), create your own race of Robot Babies, and investigate dozens of journals and books giving you the game's backstory.

However, Rodina is still not "full" in the sense that there isn't currently enough content. That's what I'm working on right now!”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Possibly, yes. If RODINA ever gets a major new feature like Multiplayer, I will increase the price.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The community is very important to me. I interact on the forums constantly, and am always listening to feedback. Users help me test the game, and keep it generally stable.

Every once in a while I do an informal "vote" to determine what milestone to work on next. I always have plans, but sometimes it's fun to get structured feedback from my customers. I really enjoy getting the community involved!”

1.4.1 Patch - Black Entrances Fixed

Hey folks - good news! The bane of my existence for the past few months - the Black Square bug that was obscuring the entrances to ships and bases (and turning the holoscreens black as well) has been fixed - hopefully once and for all!

VERY sorry to all customers affected by this one for so long. Bugs that you cannot reproduce on your machine are THE WORST!

Since I was patching 1.4.1, I also added a few more tiny fixes. I turned of MSAA completely, since it wasn't working and also was causing problems. I also extended the FOV option range at the request of a player (the new lower limit is 20).

Thanks for your extreme patience on the Black Square thing. I'm extremely happy to have it gone!

Next up - planet stuff!

Rodina 1.4.1: New Xenos! And Vote Results!

Rodina 1.4.1 is released!

This is a minor update with only one change - new Xeno art, by yours truly!

Some of you may know that I'm now doing all of the art for the game, which I'm really enjoying. Art isn't my expertise, but by doing it myself it's a lot easier to get something closer to my vision.

With that in mind, I've been meaning to redo the Xenos in a different style for a while now, and this was a good time to do it! The update was delayed a bit due to a long exhausting sickness (I'm fine now!), but I hope you like the final product!

Also: Community Vote Results!

Thanks to all for participating in this exciting vote! This time, both the binding Bossypants voters and the rest of the community agreed: Planetary Upgrade is the next priority!

Here are the totals:
  • RPG Features: 38 binding votes / 31 community votes
  • The Garden: 12 binding votes / 33 community votes
  • Planetary Upgrade: 62 binding votes / 89 community votes
Starting immediately, I will begin improving the planet renderer and generation! Hope to have something to show you soon.

Bug News

Finally: many of you have been complaining about black squares covering entrances, or holoscreens being all black. This problem has been frustrating us all for like 6 months. It's embarassing and I apologize to those affected.

The good news: I've finally reproduced it on my machine. This is the major first step towards getting it fixed, so hopefully I can make progress quickly now. Thank you all for your help over the past few months tracking this obnoxious bug down!

Thank you all so much for your support! I'm glad you all picked Planetary Upgrades - I haven't worked on the planets in a long time and I think I can really make the game look a lot better!

Talk to you again soon!

“Oh my God. I fell in love... This game's beautiful. It's really, truly beautiful.”

About This Game

RODINA is a dream.

A shared vision of a massive, seamless universe to explore. The perfect immersive space sim, where you can go anywhere, do anything, become anyone.

I started RODINA because I suspected that no company could ever achieve this dream in a AAA way. I thought that perhaps a single developer, working over a long time frame, could eventually build something great.

Join me on this adventure - try the DEMO and consider supporting further development!

Rodina is made mostly by a single, obsessed developer - a 10-year veteran of the games industry who previously worked at Bethesda Softworks on Oblivion and Fallout 3. You can always contact me at brendan@elliptic-games.com

Current Features:

  • Full-scale, completely seamless procedural solar system
4 full-size planets, 50 randomized major asteroids, something like 45,000 minor asteroids, and one enormous star!
  • Xeno Bases
Discover the Xeno Bases and Mines – interior spaces that are laid out, constructed, and decorated completely procedurally.
  • FPS Combat
Use your blaster, missiles, or powerups to handle half a dozen Xeno aliens
  • Combat with alien ships
Several different alien ship types, and 5 different weapon types, including heat-seeking missiles
  • Customizable ship interiors
Easily personalize your ship’s layout and share your design with other players
  • A Story and Background fiction
As told through books, emails, and logs
  • Dynamic Soundtrack
Over an hour of music, written by award-winning composer John Robert Matz
  • Mod Support
An open scripting system allows for mods that are simple to create, install and remove

Future Vision:

Over time, I intend to work on Rodina towards the direction of "Daggerfall in Space" - a seamless procedurally-generated space RPG on a massive scale.

Frankly, this is crazy! I can't make any promises about where or how long Rodina will go (and I ask you to buy only based on what you see here now), but I can promise to keep working on Rodina for as long as I'm able to. I'm committed to making Rodina great, and I hope that what's already released shows that I'm capable of delivering something different, vital, and fun.

Please try the demo, and if you like what you see and pick up the full game, all your money will go towards Rodina's future development!
