What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As a complex multiplayer card game, Star Scum is constantly evolving as it's being played and we would love to open it up to players to join in the process as the rest of the planned features are being worked on. We hope that we can build a community that is passionate about the game and helping guide its direction towards the finish line.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We hope to be in Early Access for 6 months to a year.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We are planning to continue balancing the game, add many new cards, tighten up the game's enemy AI and add a few more game modes, such as a Challenges mode, a Hotseat local multiplayer mode and an AI Tournament mode, and keep refining the visuals and audio.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game currently features a single player roguelike run with 230 cards where players build their deck and ship as they battle increasingly difficult AI opponents. The cards and ships unlocked in the roguelike run can be used to build decks for the other two modes currently in the game: a quick-play skirmish mode where you can battle customizable randomly generated decks and a multiplayer mode on a ranked server where you can battle other players.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price will be higher when the game leaves Early Access.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“There is currently a game Discord with a community of players, which serves as a hub for Early Access feedback. We would love to hear feedback regarding balancing, ideas and changes for the game's cards, ships and systems and would love to assist curious players in modding the game!”

About This Game

Star Scum fuses traditional deckbuilding with tight turn-based tactics gameplay where every move matters. The game is designed from the ground up as a symmetrical PvP game that can be played against other players, but its main feature is a singleplayer roguelike run where you play against procedurally generated decks controlled by a smart human-like AI and build your deck with cards looted from your opponents. Cards you discover in the singleplayer run can be used to build custom decks you can take against other players online and AI-opponents in custom local battles.

In Star Scum, building your deck is just the beginning! When you play cards in battle, they become tactical units and ship equipment like weapons and shields that you must command every turn across two battling ships. Playing cards and commanding your ship and crew both use the same precious resource: command points, and you must make difficult decisions about how to spend them every turn.

In addition to your deck of cards, you are also building your ship. The tiles of your ship define your stats, like health, amount of command points per turn and how much energy the ship can generate. In the singleplayer roguelike run, you can buy upgrades to your ship or buy entirely new ships and when playing in PvP mode against other players or AI, you can choose from any ship that you have discovered in singleplayer.

Almost every one of the hundreds of cards in the game has a unique special that provides countless synergies with your build. While the singleplayer run provides some starter decks that center around a theme, you are never limited to a specific set of cards. And in multiplayer and custom AI battles, you can build your deck from any of the cards you have discovered.

Build your deck from the cards of your opponents as you travel across the map in the singleplayer run. Cards you discover in the singleplayer run are permanently unlocked for you to use in custom decks that you can take against other players online or in custom local battles against the game AI.

The game is built as a flexible card engine with mods and updates in mind that allows for easy creation of community-driven content.  We can't wait to see what new ways to play the community discovers!
