What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“The Sea Is Broken is a solo-developed passion project, and a game I want to keep building for years. Early Access gives me a chance to develop it alongside the people it is made for: crews of friends looking for an adventure that can go wonderfully wrong.

The core experience is about working together aboard one ship, dealing with unexpected encounters, and seeing how far your crew can get. Real players will help me understand which encounters create memorable moments, which upgrades offer interesting choices, and where the game needs more polish.

I want to build on those experiences, listen to feedback, and give this strange little sea the time and care it deserves.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“My current target is to release version 1.0 within approximately two years of the Early Access launch. This is an estimate rather than a fixed deadline, and the game may be ready sooner.

The timing will depend on the remaining content, testing, and changes needed during development. I will share progress and any changes to this estimate through Steam announcements.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“I plan to expand the voyage with additional acts, new islands and encounters, more enemies and bosses, and a wider selection of ship upgrades, equipment, and character options.

Alongside new content, I intend to keep improving the existing game: refining combat and sailing, balancing progression, improving the interface, and addressing bugs and multiplayer issues.

The scope and priorities may change as development continues. Feedback from Early Access crews will help shape what comes next.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The game is currently in development and is not yet available to purchase.

The planned Early Access launch will include a complete, playable first act for 1–4 players, with sailing, combat, island encounters, resource gathering, ship damage, flooding, repairs, and a boss encounter.

The launch scope also includes ship and inventory upgrades, crew abilities, persistent unlocks earned with Cursed Coins, and lighthouse stops where your crew can shop, save its voyage, and continue another day.

Further acts are planned for development during Early Access. This section will be updated at launch to describe the content and features available in the released build.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“I plan to launch at a lower Early Access price and may increase it as substantial content is added and the game approaches its full release.

My aim is to keep the price fair for the content available at each stage. Any planned price increases will be announced in advance. Players who already own the game will receive its Early Access content updates and the full 1.0 release without an additional purchase.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I plan to use the Steam discussion forums to gather feedback, bug reports, and ideas, and Steam announcements to share updates and development progress.

I am especially interested in hearing stories from your voyages: what made your crew laugh, what caused confusion, which encounters surprised you, and what made you want to set sail again.

As a solo developer, I will need to prioritize carefully, and I cannot implement every suggestion. But those experiences will help me make better decisions about the game’s balance, features, and future content.”

About This Game

You wake up on an island. Your crew is here. So is a ship.

None of you remember how you got here. Beyond the shore lies a cursed sea that rearranges itself as you sail. Islands disappear behind you. Strange new shores emerge from the fog. And somehow, you always end up back aboard.

The Sea Is Broken is a pirate roguelite adventure for 1–4 players. Sail alone or bring your friends, chase treasure, battle bizarre enemies, and keep your shared ship afloat through voyages that rarely go according to plan.

ONE SHIP. EVERYONE’S PROBLEM.

Someone needs to take the helm. Someone needs to work the sail. Someone needs to fire the cannons.

And now there’s water downstairs.

Move between jobs as trouble unfolds. Adjust your sail to catch the wind, steer into position, and trade cannon fire with enemy ships. When shots tear holes below the waterline, grab wood to patch the hull and a bucket to bail out the water.

Your ship keeps the whole crew in the fight. Let it sink, and the voyage is over.

FOLLOW THE FOG. EXPECT TROUBLE.

Spot an island on the horizon or a ship lurking in the mist, then decide where to head next. The sea behind you disappears as new encounters emerge ahead.

You might discover a quiet island rich with supplies, stumble into a pirate ambush, or come face to face with a bizarre sea beast. Strange island inhabitants offer unusual jobs, hidden treasures tempt your crew ashore, and curious puzzles reward those willing to stop and investigate.

Chase a promising lead, take on a monster, or risk one more stop for loot. Each encounter brings fresh trouble—and the farther you sail, the stranger and more dangerous the sea becomes. Keep an eye on the horizon. Some things out there are much bigger than your boat.

LOOT FIRST. ARGUE ABOUT THE PURCHASES LATER.

Bring your gold aboard and deposit it in the shared ship treasury. Spend it on upgrades and supplies to prepare your crew for whatever comes out of the fog next.

Improve your ship, expand your inventory, and choose the equipment you want to carry. Bring a melee weapon, rely on a pistol, or carry two pistols and worry about reloading after the second shot.

Gain crew levels during the voyage and choose abilities that shape your role. Whatever your specialty, everyone can grab a bucket when the deck starts disappearing underwater.

EVEN CURSED CREWS NEED A BREAK.

Watch for the lighthouse shining through the fog. These stops give your crew a chance to catch its breath, shop for upgrades, and prepare for the next stretch.

Need to call it a night? Save your voyage at a lighthouse and continue another day.

BACK ON THAT ISLAND. BACK ON THAT SHIP.

Death sends you back aboard, but the loot in your pockets pays the price. Getting your treasure into the ship’s treasury matters.

If the ship goes under, you lose the voyage’s gold and upgrades. Earn Cursed Coins through your crew’s accomplishments to unlock new classes, cosmetics, and starting options between attempts.

Then wake up, gather your crew, and set sail again.

The sea has changed. Hopefully, your crew has learned something.
