What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“As an independent developer working alone in my spare time, I will need players to help test and improve the game, just like I've been doing for a few decades on projects like Quake 2 Evolved Blood Culture, Call of Duty Frontlines and Call of Duty Rio.

With player feedback it is extremely important to find strange bugs and adjust and evolve the gameplay.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“After the Early Access launch, we plan to keep it at this stage for 1-2 years at most, and then do a full release, but I will only open it to the public and start selling copies when I have at least one very playable map with a reasonable amount of content. Like all my releases in my almost 40 years of working in games, I always want to release stable versions. This is mandatory in my concept.

Until then, I highly recommend playing Call of Duty Rio to get a taste of what you will experience with Comando Rio.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We plan to add much more content over time, such as maps, game modes, characters, weapons and customizations for example. Exactly how I have been working on my projects over the last few decades.

I also hope that all the bugs found in the early access period are all resolved, and we just have 100% fun.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Working on game mechanics now. Early stage.

I suggest playing Call of Duty Rio while you wait, it's FREE.

Unfortunately, due to the mod's limitations, it only has Portuguese as its language. I suggest using a translator through your cell phone camera to be able to play. But rest assured that Comando Rio will have a version entirely in English to please all Elite Squad fans from all over the world.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, the price will increase upon full release.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“During all my projects for almost 40 years working with games, they have always been developed side by side with the players, solving bugs and improving the experience.

So this project will be no different, I won't change what has been working for so many decades. From the moment Early Access is launched, all development will be done online, playing daily with players, and thus adjusting the balance and fixing bugs, exactly as I have been working with you all these years.

We will use our Steam, social pages, forums, Steam community, and Discord to keep everyone up to date with every step of development, as always.

Unlike most, I really play my creations exhaustively and continue playing for decades, I really enjoy playing my games for a long time. With this I can really see what works and what doesn't and how to always improve, that's what I've been doing for the last 16 years working with Call of Duty, and that's what I intend to continue doing with Rio Command.”

About This Game

Outnumbered, with limited equipment and weapons, at a disadvantage due to the terrain's altitude, and with almost no support, you will experience what it's like to be one of the police officers who participate in these types of operations almost every day in the marvelous city, in favelas of all kinds, where every corner, every alley, could mean your end.

Mission given is mission accomplished! SKULL!

What to expect from Comando Rio

First of all, it's not just a remake of Call of Duty Rio in a new engine, but a completely new game continuing the storyline started in the mod. Don't expect another Call of Duty clone with Rio skins, because even Call of Duty Rio itself isn't that; we're going in a different direction here.

Although it's originally hardcore and has many mechanics similar to my previous works, which guarantees your satisfaction if you already like the style of my games, all the control of the game will be in the hands of the players. That's right, when you start the game you can change many things according to your tastes, even making it softcore by increasing everyone's energy, with hit markers, names above enemies, turning off friendly fire, accepting or not accepting controller connections, enabling or restricting FOV, among many other features. With this, ALL players will play exactly as they would like to play.

There will, of course, be pre-configured settings for you to choose from and start playing right away, but my idea is to give players back control of the game, thus reaching all skill levels with a single game. And best of all, everyone will be able to share their settings in the community and experiment with many different ways to play. Furthermore, all the great innovations I created in the past will be here but evolved, meaning the replayability will be extreme.

Past

It's nothing new that the wars between criminal factions in Rio de Janeiro are extremely violent, leaving countless innocent people dead every year. The State has been trying in vain to combat them for decades with limited resources and inferior weaponry. Each year things get more out of control, and today practically every corner of the city has an owner, except for the upscale areas of the South Zone, where the State doesn't own the land.

The government finds itself without options and has no choice but to declare war against these factions and militias that dominate the city. Several areas of the city are evacuated, and all favelas are declared war zones, recommending that all residents leave their homes until everything is normalized. All police forces are mobilized to hunt down and eliminate all members of the factions, whatever the cost.

These operations became known as "Call of Duty Rio".

Present

It's not known exactly when or how it happened, but in recent years a new type of criminal organization emerged, much more organized, which quickly became the only militia in the city, and before we knew it, it also controlled the illegal lottery game known as "jogo do bicho" throughout Rio de Janeiro. With this, this militia spread rapidly throughout the city, no longer remaining isolated in a few communities or poorer areas.

When the leaders of the other militias and the "jogo do bicho" started turning up dead, neither the government nor the citizens cared, and in fact were even grateful, but they didn't realize the monster that was being formed.

They already had a good portion of the criminal territory under their control, but they lacked control over most of the territories occupied by the factions, still largely driven by drug trafficking and the exploitation of local areas. We learned too late that there would be a meeting, imposed by them, with the leaders of the criminal factions Comando Vermelho (CV), Amigos dos Amigos (ADA), and Terceiro Comando Puro (TCP).

We don't know if the intention was to promote an alliance or if it was from the beginning to subject them to this new parallel regime. But that same night, none of them returned alive from that meeting, and this new militia, which we can also consider a Criminal Faction, claimed responsibility for all the murders in the name of Comando Maior (CM), and that they were assuming total control of crime in Rio de Janeiro.

Future

Due to the incompetence and slowness of the Government and the Justice system, they failed to foresee the size of the monster that was being created in the city while celebrating the deaths of criminal leaders. They ignored all warnings from the police, always thinking that what was happening was nothing serious.

In yet another act of desperation by the government, a new elite team was created within BOPE itself, using the best police officers and soldiers who had distinguished themselves in their respective corporations. This would finally be a unified and very well-equipped police force to try to put an end to this war. It was named Unit Twelve, but it is already known and feared as the Red Skulls.

Gameplay

In the game, you can play through all time periods, chronologically following the plot or creating your own experience, choosing which corporation to play with, who you will face, where the mission will take place, and how much time you have to play. From there, everything will be dynamically generated according to your choices, including up to 30 distinct objectives during the same operation. There will also be difficulty and immersion options, from many markers on the screen to even no HUD at all, to provide total immersion and realism for the most hardcore players.

And of course, in all options there will be the possibility of randomness, and everything will be dynamically generated for you. There will be millions and millions of possibilities, and therefore you will never play the exact same mission twice in your life, unless when you finish it you choose to save it, and then you can repeat it as many times as you want if you wish. We plan options for sharing these missions online, and you can play missions that others have created and allow other players to play yours. This will appeal to players who enjoy playing the same thing over and over again, as well as those who like to face the unknown with each playthrough.

Regarding Multiplayer, you can invite friends to play cooperatively on all these missions, or invite them to be your enemies to spice up your games even more, or leave it open for anyone online to join as your companion or as one of the bandits, to make everything even more unpredictable. And of course, you can also play cooperatively on the side of the bandits if you wish.

Will Call of Duty Rio be discontinued with the launch of Comando Rio?

No. It will continue to receive content and remain online as long as players continue to support the project and, most importantly, play it. Understand that Call of Duty Rio, being free and requiring extremely lightweight hardware, allows a vast number of players to play it without problems, even with computers that are 10-15 years old. For the same reason, unfortunately, many of them will not be able to play Comando Rio due to the demands of a game on Unreal Engine 5. Therefore, keeping both projects online will satisfy everyone.

Will there be the same maps as Call of Duty Rio?

Not initially. I intend to create completely new experiences, but I plan to make references to past locations as Easter Eggs.

Will the Call of Duty Rio missions continue in Comando Rio?

There will be new, completely remodeled and extensive missions with a lot of adrenaline. You can continue playing the old missions in Call of Duty Rio.

Will Comando Rio have other languages or will it also be restricted to Brazilian Portuguese as it is in Call of Duty Rio?

In Call of Duty Rio, due to limitations on the number of strings in a mod, it wasn't possible to create more than one language, and therefore Portuguese was chosen for obvious reasons. However, Comando Rio will not have this problem, having English from the Early Access launch and more languages in the final version.

Will Comando Rio have as many maps as Call of Duty Rio?

Yes, because the diversity will be much greater, but they will also be larger, and we will be able to navigate between different and more diverse environments than the old maps. I believe it will take a good few years to surpass the more than 50 maps of COD Rio, but eventually that will happen.

About the author

Hajas has been making games/mods as a hobby for almost his entire life of over 40 years, and everything has always been done in his free time and free of charge for everyone.

His passion for FPS games gave us innovative creations several years before the big franchises started using "the same ideas" in the Call of Duty series, and after that almost every FPS game released in the last decade has something created by him. Battlefield and Star Wars Battlefront included to name just a few.

Call of Duty Frontlines is one of his best-known works, earning the nickname "EPIC Mod" when it was first chosen as the Call of Duty Mod of the Year 2008 by the renowned BashandSlash, something repeated twice more in ModDB in 2012 and 2018. Another highlight was when in 2009 LowPings[/b ] recommended playing Frontlines instead of Modern Warfare 2 , because "the Frontlines mod is everything the official sequel is not" .

His last project was Call of Duty Rio, which also won the title of Call of Duty Mod of The Year 2021/2022 twice more. This project is still active with many players despite only focusing on the Brazilian market. It is a FREE project designed to run on any low-end PC. It is the basis for the creation of Comando Rio.
