What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I'd like to give our community the opportunity to get involved into the development of Knightborn as early as possible. In the process of making Knightborn the best game it can possibly be your feedback is invaluable!”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Depending on the general reception and the amount of feedback received, Knightborn aims to fully release after 12-24 months of Early Access. It's really hard to cut clean corners since the nature of the early-access.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“There is no roadmap available yet but I plan to make more playable maps, in-game map editor and integration to steamworks tools.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Knightborn features online play of four playable character class, a survival map and an open map for a more chill experience. While it's possible that you encounter minor bugs, the overall experience should be quite close to the finished project already.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes, Knightborn's price will be increased in proportion to the new gameplay and in-game tooling content that added to the game.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

About This Game

Knightborn is a love letter to the classic games we played for thousands of hours, with friends or alone.

Despite having the feel and look of a classic MMORPG, Knightborn is a multiplayer RPG that aims to offer bite-sized maps and scenarios that can be completed in a single session.

In line with this, the stat and skill system has been shaped within an easily understandable framework.

Simple and clear gameplay

No need for lightning-fast reflexes and complex strategies - just level up, find better equipment, and enjoy the adventure.

Class structure and skills

There are four different classes: Warrior, Mage, Archer, and Paladin.
Each class offers unique skills and playstyles. Class structures are balanced around team play and have different starting stats relative to each other.

Stats

  • Strength

  • Dexterity

  • Intelligence

  • Damage

  • Armor

  • Attack Speed

  • Move Speed

Inventory and equipment

Familiar and traditional inventory experience: You can organize draggable items and place them in relevant equipment slots. Equipment can provide bonus stats and even skills.

Map

Open world feel and free movement. Different game modes, nostalgic 3D models and graphics.

Quest and dialogue

Rewarding missions...
Your actions in Knightborn have consequences: Some NPC characters can react to your dialogue choices and actions, creating a dynamic and engaging storyline.

Performance and graphics

Knightborn is optimized to provide high performance while ensuring a smooth gaming experience. You can enjoy the adventure without worrying about your hardware!

What's the current state of development?

Knightborn is advancing full speed towards early access release.
For those interested, there's a playable demo with 2 maps available:

Lyrendil

  • As a Knightborn, you are sent to Lyrendil Island to retrieve an ancient artifact.

  • Lyrendil Island is a special map prepared for Knightborn's Steam Next Fest demo.

  • Playable in co-op with up to 3 players.

Colony Zone

  • Offers PvP gameplay where 2 teams compete against each other.

  • Teams try to collect points to reach the score determined by the host.

  • Playable with up to 16 players.

Early Access

  • Knightborn will initially launch with a map I'm currently calling Defense.
This map offers both co-op and solo gameplay.

  • Our goal is to defend our tower from waves of enemies.

  • In the map, which features different quests, equipment, and enemies, you can develop your character and hire friendly warriors to help defend the tower.

After Early Access

Following that, I aim to continue the life cycle with different modes and maps based on feedback from the existing content.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • You mention MMO everywhere, I'm confused. Is this an MMO?

No. Knightborn can be played offline and solo. Multiplayer is possible through Steam.
The MMORPG reference is used because the player controls and the games that inspired this gameplay are of this style.

  • Why should I play this game when there are legendary games like World of Warcraft or Path of Exile?

    • For those who enjoy these games but don't have hundreds of hours

    • Not complex

    • Budget-friendly

    • No subscription

    • No pay-to-win elements

    • Small file size

  • What technologies are you using?
    Engine: Unity
    Networking: Unity Mirror Networking
    Steam SDK: Facepunch.Steamworks
Other tools: Blender, Aseprite, Affinity Designer, Shotcut

  • Why aren't you using the Unreal engine?
I've been actively working with Unity for over 8 years. Due to my experience, Unity is my first choice.
Unity is currently the ideal platform for solo developers like me due to its community. Thus, Unity provides a solid foundation for accessibility and problem-solving. In this regard, I should emphasize that my primary focus is on in-game content rather than the tools and infrastructure I use.

  • Did you make everything visible on screen?
    No.
As a solo developer, my priority is game mechanics.
I obtain almost all 3D models and animations, particles and effects, terrain textures, sound and music from the Unity Asset Store.

  • Why isn't there a language option?
Knightborn will launch in early access. Creating the infrastructure to offer different language options requires significant work. I decided to wait and see what kind of demand develops before adding this to the to-do list.

System Requirements

    Minimum:
    • OS: Win 10
    • Memory: 4 GB RAM
    • Network: Broadband Internet connection
