What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Terrors of War is an ambitious alternate history WW2 RTS being built by a solo developer. The core combat, economy, supply line systems, online multiplayer and moddable Lua AI are already playable, but the Shadow War faction, the full story campaign and later systems need more time and iteration.

Early Access lets you help decide what happens next. Your feedback can steer balance changes, new Operations, AI tuning and the shape of the 1944 to 1957 campaign.

My goal is a definitive, polished experience. While some systems are still in active iteration, the current build offers a stable and engaging experience. I am highly active in the community and typically resolve reported issues quickly. By joining Early Access, you aren't just buying a game; you're joining a responsive development process focused on quality.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“I currently estimate around 18 months of Early Access before calling the game version 1.0. That may change based on feedback and scope, but the goal is clear. Lock in a strong core, then ship a full story campaign on top of it.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version is planned to feel like a complete RTS built on top of the current foundation. Key goals for version 1.0 include:

• A full story campaign: A multi mission narrative from 1944 to 1957 that follows US OSS forces, a Nazi shadow group, Soviet rivals and key defectors. Expect amphibious landings, canal floods, Arctic convoys, Berlin quarantines and a final showdown over an Antarctic super reactor.

• The Shadow War faction (Die Schatten): A desperate asymmetric faction that recycles the dead and weaponizes bio-horror. Every corpse left on the battlefield feeds their war machine. The first major content update after launch.

• More factions and tech trees: Expand beyond the initial USA versus Schatten conflict with new commanders and experimental tech styles such as prototype lasers, plague like mutators, gravity weapons and boarding focused forces.

• More handcrafted Operations: Scenario style missions inspired by campaign moments, such as convoy heists, desperate defenses, naval escorts and quarantine zones, that you can replay outside the campaign.

• Deeper systems: Expanded node specialisation, richer superweapon interactions such as flooding, infection, fog, tethering and boarding, plus more comeback tools so battles stay tense instead of turning into one sided snowballs.

• More maps and polish: A larger variety of biomes including Baltic coasts, Alps, Patagonia, Panama Canal, Atacama desert and Antarctic ice shelves, along with UI and UX refinement, performance tuning and smarter AI.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At the start of Early Access, Terrors of War offers a deep and playable core experience with two factions.

• Skirmish versus adaptive AI across multiple handcrafted maps, from tight factory brawls to sprawling countryside and coastal assaults. Multiple difficulty levels from Easy to Insane.

• Online multiplayer for up to 8 players via Steam relay with no port forwarding needed. If a player disconnects, the AI takes command of their forces until they reconnect. Multiplayer balance tuning is ongoing throughout Early Access.

• The entire AI is written in moddable Lua scripts. Read them, tweak difficulty curves and tactics, or write entirely new AI behaviors and share them with the community.

• Scenario style Operations and a guided tutorial that echo planned campaign missions such as beach landings, lab raids, convoy protection and base assaults, but without full cutscenes and branching story layers yet.

• The core economy and supply line system is fully playable. Capture nodes, run convoys, protect depots, garrison buildings, position infantry behind cover, send stealth units through vegetation, and earn veterancy stars as your units grow into battle-hardened war machines.

• Call in devastating strikes as your escalation rises through combat, including artillery barrages, strafing runs, paradrops and rocket strikes.

• Every match is auto-recorded for replay at variable speeds. Save mid-match in singleplayer. Steam Achievements supported.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Yes. During Early Access the game will be cheaper to reflect its in progress state. As new systems, Operations and eventually the full campaign are added, the price will increase in steps. Early supporters keep their copy and all future updates.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“I am relying heavily on player feedback to steer development. You can:

• Join the Discord through the link on this Steam page to vote in polls, share replays, report bugs and suggest changes.

• Post on the Steam forums with balance thoughts, scenario ideas and campaign feedback.

• Mod the AI directly. The entire AI is open Lua scripts. If you build something interesting, share it with the community.

• Try new builds, then tell me what worked, what did not, and where the game should lean harder, whether that means gritty WW2, horror or wild experimental science fiction.

I read everything and regularly fold community suggestions into the roadmap.”

About This Game

NOT your average RTS. Terrors of War is an alternate-history strategy game in two acts. Act I is grounded WW2: tanks, artillery, and the brutal economics of attrition. Protect your supply lines or starve. Act II is the Shadow War, waged by Die Schatten, a fanatical Nazi splinter faction that has spent years preparing for the moment the world looks away.

Act I: The War You Trained For

Lead U.S. Forces or the Wehrmacht. Protect supply convoys, push Field Depots that buff nearby troops, and capture strategic Nodes for economy, vision, or defense. Every engagement is a fight over logistics.

Command armies of over a hundred units. Position infantry behind cover, garrison buildings, and send stealth units through vegetation to ambush. Tanks crush infantry in their path. As your escalation rises through combat, call in devastating firepower: artillery barrages, strafing runs, paradrops, rocket strikes.

Act II: The Shadow War

Every corpse you leave behind feeds their war machine. Every victory you deny them starves it.

While the U.S. Forces and the Wehrmacht fight a conventional war of logistics and attrition, something far worse gathers in the ruins. Die Schatten have been preparing in secret, choosing their targets, refining their weapons. When they judge their moment, they strike in the open. The Shadow War erupts, and U.S. OSS task forces are best equipped to fight it. Die Schatten recycle the dead, weaponize bio-horror, and twist the battlefield into a nightmare.

Key Features

  • Convoy & Supply Line Warfare: No passive income. Supply trucks spawn at map edges on timers and must reach your base. Protect them, ambush the enemy's, or watch your army starve. Push forward Field Depots to buff nearby units with faster fire rate, higher defense, and improved accuracy. Man crewed gun emplacements at chokepoints, but only if your supply lines can keep them fed. Every engagement is a fight over logistics.

  • Call-In Powers & Escalation: Earn escalation through combat kills to unlock devastating call-in abilities. Rain artillery barrages on fortified positions, launch strafing runs across enemy formations, drop paratroopers behind enemy lines, call in rocket strikes, or rush battlefield repairs to keep your armor rolling. These powers turn the tide. Use them wisely.

  • Strategic Node System: Capture and hold map objectives with infantry to earn economy multipliers, vision advantages, or population bonuses. Nodes force constant expansion and fighting across the map, and losing one can cascade your whole economy in a minute.

  • Adaptive & Moddable AI: Fight an AI that forms battle groups, scouts the map, flanks your positions, harasses your supply lines, and calls in its own air support. Multiple difficulty levels from Easy to Insane. The entire AI is written in Lua scripts you can open and edit. Read them, tweak difficulty curves and tactics, or write entirely new AI behaviors from scratch and share them with the community.

  • Online Multiplayer (Early Access): Battle up to 8 players online via Steam relay. No port forwarding or network configuration needed. If a player disconnects, the AI seamlessly takes command of their forces. Reconnect mid-match and pick up right where you left off.

  • Active Anti-Cheat: Multiplayer is actively defended. Cheaters are caught and banned automatically. The community can review and report suspicious matches. Fair play is built in from day one.

  • Match Replays & Mid-Match Saves: Every match auto-records for replay at 0.25x to 16x speed. Singleplayer saves let you pause and resume anytime.

  • Shadow War Faction (Coming in Early Access): An aggressive, resource-starved asymmetric faction that thrives on battlefield scavenging and bio-horror. Deny them ground and corpses or lose the war. The first major content update after launch.

Early Access Launch: What's In Now

Launch is Act I: U.S. Forces and Wehrmacht factions, full skirmish gameplay with adaptive AI, Operations and a guided tutorial, online multiplayer, match replays, save/load, and Steam Achievements. Act II arrives during Early Access: Die Schatten and OSS join as playable factions, alongside the single-player campaign spanning from 1945 deep into the 1950s.

Early Access Roadmap

  • Continuous Tuning: Regular balance patches, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements driven by community feedback and match data throughout Early Access.

  • Act II Update: Die Schatten and OSS added as playable factions, with Die Schatten designed against OSS as the Shadow War matchup.

  • Campaign Rollout: Full single-player campaign from 1945 deep into the 1950s, released in chapters across Early Access.

  • Ongoing: Additional maps and Operations, additional multiplayer features, and community-requested content.

A Message from the Developer

I built Terrors of War because I wanted a WW2 RTS where your supply lines matter as much as your units. Where your front line holds not because you have the bigger army, but because you kept the trucks rolling. To me, there is nothing more satisfying than a well-oiled war machine, and that machine only works if you can keep it fueled. I am building this alone to put that satisfying tension back in your hands.

The AI is written entirely in Lua, not hidden behind a black box. You can read it, learn from it, break it, and rebuild it however you want. I believe players should be able to shape their experience, not just play what they are given.

Because I am a solo dev, your feedback doesn't go into a suggestion box. It goes directly into the code. Every tweak, every fix, every new system comes from someone asking for it. If you are tired of "passive income" and want a war that actually feels satisfying, I am making this for you.

AI Generated Content Disclosure

The developers describe how their game uses AI Generated Content like this:

Some AI-generated content has been incorporated into the game. AI handles tasks like generating boilerplate code and other types of code assistance, freeing up time to concentrate on perfecting gameplay and making the user experience top-notch. Right now, a minor amount of audio and visuals you see are AI-generated, but as I move through Early Access, I'll be swapping some of them out for custom-made content from freelancers. It's all part of my commitment to delivering the best possible game and product for you, the gamer. In addition to the game, this Steam page has been reviewed and enhanced with the assistance of AI.

Mature Content Description
