What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Because Early Access would give me the quickest way to reach out to people, and just as importantly, have them reach back out to me. Up until this point, my work on this game has been in a completely isolated vacuum, and my heart demands that needs to change...the sooner, the better.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Considering I started work on this on July 4, 2021, it took about 8 months to reach the 0.2 Milestone (not counting the small changes and readying for publishing onto Steam). So, by my calculations, I predict the full 1.0 release will be around July of 2025. That said, I can't and won't make any promises; there are numerous factors that could make progress move faster or slower. And thus, the short answer (and most honest takeaway) is "When I Feel Like It!"”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The main difference planned is content...lots and lots of CONTENT! I want more chapters to finish the story, more bad guys, more good guys, more dialogue, more guitar music, more fun things in Settings, more in-game lore...more, more, MORE!

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Honestly, there's good progress, yet as it stands, it is absolutely incomplete! Some of what I've written in the main store description has not yet been implemented (Including the lore for the Kingdom of Badass; it's in my head, I just haven't yet put it onto digital paper, let alone ready for V0.2 release. Plus, some of the darker narrative themes that don't really materialize until about halfway through; development as of this initial launch is closer to a quarter done - specifically, for example, the literal "unethical experiments" is not scripted until around Chapter 6). All the weapons are done, and about half the companions. I've got 2 chapters and a super brief prologue ready, and there's going to be at least 6 more chapters plus an epilogue. Even some of the settings menus are not yet fully implemented, but the parts that are fully functional should go to show how much joy I've had in making this game so far.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“No. If I had my way, it will be free now, and it will be free forever. There are a few reasons for this, but the single most important one is to emphasize this is a hobby, not a job. I have no deadlines, no legal or moral obligations, and I create all of this absolutely just for fun! Maybe if I finish here and start to put together a sequel (admittedly, that's a stratospheric what-if), the sequel may have a price tag of greater than zero. But for now, no, this game is promised to be free! (If there were popular demand, maybe I'd do some kind of "Kickstarter" or "Patreon" if enough people were truly fanatical about throwing their money at me, but I can not assure that would come with any perks...not even credits. Particularly since the idea of me making money from working on something I love sounds too good to be true! And that still won't change the store page's price: that is set to be free!)”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“From bug reporting to moral support (or if you want to be a Godsend, technical tips on how I can get better with game development and making gameplay more exciting), you are enthusiastically encouraged to follow me across social media - whether that's Twitter, Deviantart, Roll20, or Discord! And Steam has a "Discussions" forum internally built in, so we can use that as well. In fact, I may even give out my email address if I like you enough! Because ever since COVID took over the world, I have more free time than I know what to do with, and that means circumstances can get lonely, so having some company would be great. And it goes back to the first question: I want to see if what I'm doing here is worth something, or if it's all wasting my time. And hey, since Freedom of Speech is a creative and artistic theme for this game, you're welcome to say some not-so-nice things to my digital face. Obviously, I'd prefer something encouraging to keep things fun, but I won't stop you from being honest. Most importantly, I will just about always, ALWAYS, give you a build of my game if you simply ask me nicely. All the channels are right there on the store page! The only wrong answer is no answer.”

About This Game

The Way of the Badass is a third-person, 2D shooter that features basic movement controls, a wide spectrum of weaponry, and a heavy emphasis on visual storytelling. Being 2D, most movement is done by going either left or right, with some up and down depending on pathways and efforts to dodge incoming enemy projectiles.

An interactive cartoon!
Drawn and completely created by Jay Geis himself, he alone single-handedly devised this on a team of none but himself, on a zero dollar budget, and on a part-time schedule. The whole experience should feel like playing through one of his comics (specifically set in the "Short Bus" franchise on the timeline set 30 years after the original "Hero Team" stories). Witness what nothing but raw enthusiasm can bring to the table!

Female Protagonist!

The adventure centers around a 5-year-old girl who's looking for her family - and her father specifically, a retired Colonel and World War III veteran. The story is told through her eyes, those adorable yet mean-spirited eyes.

Colorful Characters!

From the Duke of Badass named Duke Pope who's humbly serving as Scarlet's lieutenant, to a hobo whose guts and glory aspire to set the world record for "most swear words in a video game", to a literal Nazi that holds the torch onto the failed ideology of World War II, each of the characters are distinct and memorable for their own no-holding-back attitudes when faced with the seemingly impossible challenge of restoring the artificial order of humanity as the masters of the Earth.

Defy the censors, and resist the Thought Police!

Such oppression is lurking in this world, even in the formerly Libertarian haven of Las Vegas, Nevada. And it's going to take an absurd crew to break through the conditioning of sappiness. That means ruling over a secret society called the "Kingdom of Badass"! Learn more about their culture, where punks, Nazis, and American soldiers unite!

Explore the lore!
Tidbits are hidden throughout various locations that reveal what has happened in this fictional alternate timeline, spanning from the 2010s to the game's present in the 2040s. See what the kids who "Ride the Short Bus" are taught in their museums and history textbooks.

Full Voice Acting!
Featuring the debut of Jay's voice talents, witness this single, lonely male perform as a little girl, a Nazi Stormtrooper, a mentally insane homeless person, a grizzled war veteran, a grizzly Viking Berserker, a knife whooshing through the air, and many more!

Rock out to an all metal soundtrack!
Also introducing the debut of Jay's performance as a GUITAR WARRIOR! From the psychotic noise of Violet, to the viking's roar, and the trippy vibes inside an alien's brain, each song has its own unique identity.

Conduct unethical experiments on the invaders and their abominable creations!
Don't just kill the tyrants. Torture them with methods including but not limited to: fire and acid, psychological trauma inflicted from school, and COVID!

Secrets and Easter Eggs!
There are a slew of cute little goodies! Some of them give early access to powerful weapons, and others are there just for fun.

Unabridged Dev Diary!
If you've ever wanted to pick Jay's brain, there is a way to do that. Get more info than you've ever wanted to know, every step of the creation process, involving not only behind-the-scenes but ALSO behind-the-behind-the-scenes! (That would be in the "News" feeds and similar announcements pages, not necessarily in the game itself.)

Free...not free, asterisk; free, exclamation mark!
No external info stealers, no "in-app purchases" or "microtransactions", no invasive advertising, no DRM, no fine print, and no horse manure! This is so chock full of potential and equally juxtaposed by obscurity, Jay is giving it away for free!

So tell all your family, friends, and pets about the journey of this Patron Saint of Cruel and Unusual Punishment!

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

Contains ideologically controversial viewpoints, intentionally offensive material, as well as numerous scenes of violence and intense cruelty. The artistic vision also intentionally explores themes of sadism and masochism (and not in a sexual context). Some instances of strong language and slurs may also be applied, and small moments of cartoon nudity.
