What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early Access is an excellent opportunity to receive constructive criticism with the objective to improve the quality of Abyss. Feedback is appreciated and I’m looking forward to reading everyone's thoughts. Feel free to message me on social media or through email.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We expect Abyss to be in Early Access for approximately 9 to 12 months. Development timelines may shift as the game evolves, but the goal during this period is to refine the core gameplay experience with community feedback and expand the initial content.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of Abyss is planned to expand on the foundation established in Early Access. This includes additional levels, more environments, new enemies, expanded audio/visual content, improvements to gameplay, animations and UI. The scope may evolve over time as development continues and feedback is implemented.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version of Abyss includes a playable first level that introduces the core mechanics, visual style and overall tone of the game. Players can experience the foundational gameplay loop, basic interactions and initial mechanics, although content is limited and still in active development. Updates will focus on expanding gameplay, improving performance and refining the overall experience.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We plan to gradually increase the price as new content and features are added throughout Early Access. Players who purchase the game early will receive the full experience at a lower entry price as development progresses.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“Community feedback will play an important role in the development of Abyss. Players will be able to share their thoughts through Steam discussions or contacting the developers using our emails or social media channels. Constructive criticism will be reviewed when improving gameplay, balancing mechanics and shaping future updates because it is important to refine the user experience based on real player input.”

About This Game

SUMMARY

A young boy is granted a wish to see his dead dog one last time but only if he can survive the journey to the very bottom of his heart.

Abyss is an experience that embodies life's deepest struggles about death, failure and heartbreak. It represents the overwhelming hole we sometimes find ourselves in, where everything feels insurmountable and climbing out seems impossible. We dig these holes without realizing, carving both a prison and a path. The obstacles we face are the very walls we built ourselves and we must confront them to climb back toward the light. With each descent into darkness, the challenges grow more difficult and dangerous than the last, but no matter how endless it seems, there is always a way out… even if you have to make it yourself.

STORY

After his dog dies, the boy cries himself to sleep and wakes up on a strange tropical beach beneath a star filled sky. As he turns around, he notices a lonely bar in the distance with a glowing sign that reads Rock Bottom. Inside, a skeleton in a Hawaiian shirt quietly cleans glasses behind the counter. He calls himself Death.

Death offers the boy a choice to descend into the basement and discover a world hidden deep within himself. After walking down the stairs, the boy opens a door that locks behind him. There is no handle, no way to turn back, only forward.

Beyond the door, through a trash filled room buried in darkness, he discovers an ancient mirror. The mirror speaks of a place known as The Abyss, a surreal dimension between dreams, life and death. A realm where humanity’s deepest wishes can be granted but only to those who survive the journey to the very bottom of their own heart.

The mirror tells him he can see his dead dog again. Blinded by grief and hatred, the impulsive boy does not hesitate as he jumps inside.

HYBRID FPS & RPG GAMEPLAY

Abyss is a first-person action-adventure RPG where you take control of a young boy traveling through the labyrinths of his soul. Run and gun your way through enemies or engage in traditional turn-based combat. Your hands are the ultimate weapon. Unleash devastating energy blasts and unlock your true potential by upgrading your abilities using the souls you gain after defeating enemies.

YIN AND YANG REIMAGINED

Salt and Pepper are the manifestations of the protagonist’s inner conflict and consciousness. They act as spiritual guides throughout the journey reacting to the emotional weight of your choices. Their opposing personalities bring tension, humor and psychological depth to the gameplay experience. As you descend deeper, their presence grows stronger and the bond with you becomes harder to ignore.

IMMERSIVE WORLDS

Venture through uniquely hand crafted levels with evolving mechanics that challenge both mind and reflexes. Every level introduces fresh obstacles, surprises and immersive storytelling.

UNIQUE ART STYLE

Experience a distinct visual aesthetic that blends clay-like textures in the 3D world with gritty, manga-inspired UI and art. The raw, evocative art style captures the emotional weight of the journey, merging the fantastical with contemporary design to bring everything to life.

COLLECTIBLES & EXTRAS

Discover over 25 unique items that enhance gameplay. Enjoy the in-game music player with exclusive tracks, find lost pages of poetry, concept art and other hidden treasures, inviting players to explore every corner of the Abyss.

Mature Content Description

The developers describe the content like this:

This game contains mature themes and imagery intended for adult audiences.

Throughout the world of Abyss, players will encounter environmental art that includes vulgar language, depictions of violence, sexual innuendos and emotionally provocative graffiti. These elements are not included for shock value but as part of the game’s artistic direction. The world is designed as a reflection of real urban environments, inspired by the street art, stickers and visual voices found throughout New York City and New Jersey. Environmental storytelling plays a central role with poetry, posters and graffiti serving as narrative devices that communicate culture and atmosphere.

Blood appears when the player takes damage. In certain instances, stylized animated insults (“putiadas”) appear on screen. A “putiada” is an expressive, often poetic insult in Spanish. These are used to reinforce the game’s harsh tone and psychological intensity rather than to encourage or glorify violence.

The game includes a mechanic where the player may intentionally sacrifice health to gain temporary power. Repeated use of this mechanic can result in the player’s death. This system is presented as a risk–reward gameplay feature and is not intended to promote self-harm. As with most games, death results in a restart.

The game includes depictions of alcohol and drug use. Players may consume substances that temporarily alter gameplay. Drinking alcohol (such as beer) and using certain drugs will affect aim, distort visuals with double vision and increase overall difficulty. Continued consumption can result in an overdose, leading to the character’s death.
Status effects include Tipsy, Drunk, High and Crossed, each progressively impairing control and perception. While some substances may provide temporary advantages, they also introduce significant risks and consequences. These mechanics are not designed to glamorize substance use but serve as part of the game’s broader exploration of grief, escapism, self-destruction and the search for God during emotional trauma.

As the protagonist struggles with the loss of his dog, the player will encounter choices that carry an impact on the body, mind and soul. Substance use within the game is also another implementation of a risk–reward system that reinforces the themes of vulnerability, consequence and personal growth.

In short, all mature elements are presented within the context of artistic expression and environmental storytelling. Abyss explores dark themes as part of its atmosphere and narrative identity.

This game contains explicit depictions of things that are real.
These things are commonly known as life.
If it sounds sarcastic - don’t take it seriously.
If it sounds dangerous - don’t try it at all.
If it offends you just stop playing!
