What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We have two reasons for choosing Early Access.
1) The game is meant to be "hard, but rewarding and fun". However, there is a fine line between that and "hard and frustrating". We want to use Early Access to address player feedback, guide development and make sure the player experience is as enjoyable as possible. We will be balancing game mechanics, deaths and playability during this period.
2) We're a two person team making our first game. While we're doing our best to make the game as bug free as possible, we'd be foolhardy to not anticipate something unexpected happening. We'll use this time to make sure the game is properly optimized and runs reliably on players' computers.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We hope for a period of approximately two to three months of Early Access, depending on player feedback.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Early Access will be limited in how far in the over-arching story you can progress. Similarly, the environment will initially be limited in order to focus on balance and work on player feedback. During the course of early access, once we've tuned the mechanics, we will release two additional areas for players to explore, furthering the story as well.

Additionally, due to the nature of the game and the story we've developed, the story of the game itself will change over time. Without giving away spoilers, this means that there are... story elements that will only appear in Early Access, that will not appear after full release, as the game... evolves into its mature state.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version contains the entire store as playable area, and all the essential game mechanics. A lot of the flavor and theme are there as well, although some is gated behind story elements that aren't in game as of yet (involving the second and third areas).”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The game will be on sale during Early Access as a thank you to our early players, and then it will be full price after release for quite some time.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We will be using feedback from the Steam reviews & forums, our Discord server and on Twitter. Additionally, we will be setting up a roadmap that is routinely updated as we make progress.”

About This Game

"Help a disabled guy buy a couple weeks of groceries, load them in his car, then leave. Didn't even have to help him unload, only interact with him in the store's parking lot. Seemed like an easy way to make a hundred bucks and even feel like a nice guy doing it, right?

Now I'm trapped. There's barricades on the windows and doors and- well, there's something in here with me. The cashier is gone and the only exit I can find is this... archway. I don't know what scares me more Mary, that archway, the freaking wolf I saw wandering around, or whatever's making that chattering sound in the dark above me. Now I'm huddled here behind a counter, whispering this message even though my phone won't god damn connect, hoping you get it somehow. The kiosk has been calling my name, I'm going to see if I can get help on it.

All I wanted to do was get you that ring I've been hinting at Mary. I'm sorry. I love you."

Last Chance Market, across from the Leng Forest Information Center, is a trusted stop and literal last chance to buy supplies for hikers and campers heading in to explore British Columbia’s vast Coast Range wilderness. Known by locals for its quality food, competitive prices, and quirky atmosphere, the store’s mascot, Ellie the Elk, waits outside to greet shoppers. With a wide selection of free range game meats, wild caught fish and fresh cooked delicacies, we can always find something to satisfy your cravings.

If you're heading into the wild Yaxala Valley, be sure to visit our hiking and camping section! More people disappear in the wilderness beyond Last Chance than anywhere else in Canada each year. With notoriously steep mountains, deep plunging ravines, and dense old growth forests obscuring trails, just getting where you want to be can be treacherous. Aggressive wildlife and volatile weather only add dangers for the unprepared. So whether you're hunting Leng's Lost Gold or going on a nature adventure, we can help you come back safe and sound.

As the pawn of Yog-Sothoth, the player must survive and escape the store. When facing a god determined to consume you or use you for parts, that's easier said than done. Your only chance for survival is to unravel the mysteries surrounding the town and store, and use the ancient magics at play to find a door out. Expect to die.

Features
  • Non-linear, open world to explore and die in.

The Ballad for Monsters, Canto I

Before time ticked the music played,
To calm the sleeper dancers swayed.
But from the darkness something came,
Changed the tempo, began the game.
Now the cadence beats hard and fast,
How will the dancers ever last?
Against their foe they must rely,
in this strange aeon, death will die.

Last Chance Market is the first game in an expansive universe we've created, The Ballad for Monsters. We've already planned for the effects of the player's actions in this game to echo into other games in meaningful ways. See you in the mist.
