About This Game

GAME FEATURES

  • The story takes place on a modern university campus. Lin Mo has always avoided social interaction and grown accustomed to being on his own. But after unexpectedly becoming involved in a volunteer program for exchange students, he is forced into the very interactions he has spent so long avoiding. How will he make it through?

  • What Acts up features a distinctive form of multi-window storytelling. Windows may shake, shrink, shift out of place, or even spiral out of control, turning Lin Mo's psychological state into part of the game's presentation and allowing fears that once existed only inside his mind to spill directly onto your desktop.

  • The game does not explain Lin Mo's past through lengthy exposition. Past and present intertwine, while imagination and reality bleed into one another. Through fragmented scenes and subtle details, you will gradually piece together what happened to him and begin to understand where his fears came from.

  • Every character has their own experiences and perspective. Their relationships with Lin Mo will gradually change through conversations that may, at first, seem completely ordinary.

THEMES

Social anxiety, and the psychological struggles that can become intertwined with it, have long been surrounded by misunderstanding.

"You're just shy. You need more confidence."

"You seem so outgoing. Why are you still afraid of talking to people?"

Through Lin Mo's story, What Acts up hopes to bring players closer to forms of fear, self-doubt, and inner conflict that are not always visible from the outside. We also hope that those who have experienced similar feelings may find a little understanding and companionship here.

But What Acts up is not intended to be an inspirational story about "overcoming social anxiety."

Some fears may stay with us for a long time. They can make us retreat, hesitate, question ourselves, and grow accustomed to putting ourselves on trial again and again.

Yet even when someone has begun to believe that something inside them is "acting up," they may still learn to recognize those voices in their mind that constantly tear them down, to understand where those voices came from, and to ask whether they truly belong to them at all.

Through fragmented storytelling, multi-window presentation, and psychological realism, the game gradually reveals Lin Mo's past and present.

Where he ultimately goes from there may be left for each player to decide.
