What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“I make Undead Development 2 alone. I have been slowly building it for years and want the last stretch to be built with the community. I am continuing to expand the game with new features and content, and I want community feedback to shape the game and help me prioritize what to build next. Tell me what features and gameplay you want expanded in the UD2 Discord and Steam forums.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Roughly 12-18 months, depending on feedback and on how long the plan below takes to get right. Expect frequent updates early on while I work through the first round of bugs and feedback, then content updates as each one is finished.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“Planned: new NPCs, new weapons, new random events, and ongoing polish, bug fixing and balance work. Experiments I want to try, none of them promises: vehicles, one large open map, and a casual PvPvE mode. These are my plans, but development will focus on the features and content players enjoy most.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Playable today:

• Journey, the campaign: forest, swamp and city, 39 zones, game loop fully playable.
• Hideout Defense: zones you evacuate from unlock as bases to fortify and defend against waves.
• Research progression expands the loot pool with 40+ items across rarity tiers.
• Elite zombies and bandit crews with their own behaviors.
• Difficulty tiers, with escalating difficulty the longer you survive.
• Desktop or VR, in the same lobby. Online co-op for 1 to 4 players through Steam.

Expect bugs, rough edges and balance changes. Updates are built to keep your saves working.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“The price may increase at full release as content grows.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“The UD2 Discord and the Steam forums are where I take feedback. I read both regularly, and community feedback decides what content gets priority. Patch notes come with updates.”

About This Game

Undead Development 2 is a combat focused zombie survival game for 1 to 4 players. Scavenge a point of interest for weapons and supplies. Fortify a location by dragging and nailing the furniture and junk into barricades. Fight your way from the forest to the city in Journey, or grow one base in Hideout Defense.

Nail anything to anything

The nailing system lets you nail anything to anything. Barricades are physics objects: drag a couch across a doorway, nail it down, and the horde has to break it to get through. Line the entrance with knives and bear traps, and research your way up to more advanced trap creation. There is no recipe list. Nail a bear trap to a door, a knife to a plank, a blade to a spinning machine, and see what holds.

Survive together

Online co-op for 1 to 4 players through Steam. One player covers the doorway while another nails it shut, then patches the barricade between waves while a teammate watches their back. VR and desktop players share the same lobby, and progression carries across solo and co-op.

Journey

Explore a gauntlet of biomes. Forest, swamp, city, each one harder than the last. Scavenge supplies from random points of interest, find a place to barricade and hold out. Survive until evacuation brings you to the next biome. Structured like a roguelite: random loot with rarity tiers, random events, random levels on the map. Hardcore death penalties are optional.

Hideout Defense

Evacuate a zone in Journey and it unlocks as a hideout. Pick one, fortify it, and defend it against wave after wave, improving the base between each one.

Progression

Research expands the loot pool: 40+ items at Early Access launch, and every one you unlock starts showing up in runs. Level up to unlock random player skins. Challenges pay out skins and trophy weapons.

Features

  • Desktop or VR, in the same lobby.

  • 1 to 4 player online co-op through Steam.

  • Difficulty tiers from power fantasy to hardcore roguelike, with hardcore death as its own switch.

  • Strain: loop back through the biomes at a higher difficulty. Enemy health never scales, so nothing turns into a bullet sponge.

  • NPCs with their own behaviors and abilities, from elite zombies to bandit crews.

  • Dynamic systems: tree cutting, fire spreading, physics damage.

  • Minimalist interface. Interact directly with tools and items in the world.

FAQ

  • Do I need VR? No. Desktop is a full mode, and both play together.

  • Can I play solo? Yes, and progression carries over to co-op.

The developers describe the content like this:

Stylized cartoon violence with blood and gore. Blood and dismemberment can be turned off before gameplay starts. Online co-op with text and voice chat. Text chat is filtered by default and voice chat is optional.
