What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Early access allows me to get the game to players as soon as possible too and helps to build a community to which I can obtain feedback and make the game even better. This will include improving and adding to released episodes as well as upcoming in-development episodes.
As a solo developer, it can be difficult to know the right solution to a problem so by letting people play the game in an early stage, I can collaborate with the core fans to build the game to be as good as it can be.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Hellscreen will come out of early access once all three episodes are finished.
In terms of how long each episode will take to finish is hard to say at the moment but I expect the following:

Episode 1 - March 2023
Episode 2 - Early 2024
Episode 3 - mid-to-late 2024 - Out of Early Access

There will be quality of life and community suggestions implemented between the episodes however.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The full version of the game will contain 3 episodes, difficulty & accessibility options as well as full controller support & localization. Steam deck support will also be included.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version contains Episode 1, consisting of 5 weapons, 9 enemies, and many soul cores to collect across 9 maps.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“During Early Access. Hellscreen will be cheaper throughout development but the price will go up once Episode 3 is complete and released.
It's best to buy early, shape the future of the game and save money!”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“During Early access, I will be inviting and encouraging players to give feedback on the steam forums, on Twitter, and on the Hellscreen discord, of which I have a dedicated feedback channel.
This feedback will be looked at and will have an effect on the process of development throughout.”

STORY

Before the old times, ancient gods once held the eternal responsibility of sending the good to heaven and the wicked to hell. After growing tired of everlasting life and having grown older than time itself, the gods built a gigantic monolithic machine.

This titan of a device was to take on their endless burden of soul sorting and allow them to die.

This "Hellscreen" machine was soon constructed. But there was no rejoicing, only relief. In a flash, the old gods were gone, lost to time.

After millennia of sorting countless souls, the machine begins to malfunction and displaces you.

You are taken from the real world at the point of your death and deposited in the Hellscreen realm, instead of the peaceful afterlife you deserve.

You are given an inhuman form and are called upon to destroy the machine and its infernal biome.

It must be stopped from dismantling the fabric of all existence and destroying all reality and only you can stop it and reset order.

Once this is done then perhaps you can return to your eternal resting spot.
