What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“We’ve been working on Ritual: Crown of Horns for quite a while now and the game went through some radical design changes during that process. Last year we made a decision: either we’re going to start over and make a prototype that we feel is exciting and fun or we’re going to scrap the game and, maybe, get back to it some time in the future. As you can see: we’ve made it, the prototype was fun and it only kept getting better as the time passed. However, it became clear that we will need some help: because of Ritual’s arcade gameplay and the way it’s structured, we’re going to need you - the Players - to help us in developing the game further.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“Currently we aim for Fall 2019 as a launch date for the full version of Ritual - it will take roughly 4-5 months to finish the game. However, it depends on how YOU are going to react to what you’re going to see and what kind of features you’d like us to include and how long it’s going to take us to fix all the bugs.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We have some plans for the full version that we will share, and will keep sharing, with our community -- things that we want to see in the game but just didn’t have the time to implement properly yet. For example: we are going to include the full storyline in one of our major patches. We are also going to add more levels (our current aim is around 50, in contrast to 18 available now), more challenges and spells, and other things we’ve always planned for. Other major feature is the Real World Data-driven challenge mode that’s going to arrive in one of the patches and also -- to be honest -- we need to gather your feedback and listen to you closely while designing the Endless Mode and accessibility features we want to include in the full game.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“Currently Ritual: Crown of Horns is almost feature complete and playable. Please refer to About the Game section to learn more about all currently implemented features. We hope that if you get into the rhythm and your goal is to just plow through the content we’re giving, you’re still going to find around 2-3 hours of fun in the Early Access version of the game. But if you’re hardcore and want to complete all of the challenges… well, that’s going to take a while longer.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We’ve decided that we’re going to ask for the very same price during and after Early Access period. We want the game to develop thanks to your feedback and engagement, and we will communicate with you, answer your questions, announce new updates and features. We want to be transparent and honest from the very beginning of the Early Access period and reach players, who accept both our vision of gameplay, art style, story, mechanics, but also business model we decided to follow.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“First and foremost -- we plan to listen to you and gather as much feedback as possible. This doesn’t mean we’re going to include every feature you ask for but we’ll try to act on most of the things you say that don’t compromise our vision of the game. We’d love to hear from you through our Discord channel and on our Steam forums, and we plan to share a lot about the development process through our social media channels. We hope we’re going to deliver this in a way that you will find acceptable: we’re devoted to listening and helping out whenever we can.

We intend to give you sneak peeks of things to come: new levels to play before they’re finalized, new spells to try out before we implement them fully and so on. We will rely on your feedback and tweak the game accordingly.”

Patch #2: Patch notes for v.

- IMPORTANT We have reworked our default aiming system for keyboard + mouse. Even though it's not "free", we feel that it's much better than whatever we had before -- our programmer says the game plays better on M+K than on a gamepad right now! Please give it a try and leave us your feedback. Please! :)
- Added missing witch-is-attacked-indicators on levels

- Changed inputs for keyboard:

Now abilities are mapped to Q, E and F
Weapons are mapped to 1, 2 and 3
Also you can use Tab/Mouse Scroll for new weapons

- Nerfed soul gain stat on the superpowers-giving Black And White Cape
- Added "equipped" status icon to elements in inventory
- Fixed a shop-related bug (when you were buying an item and had cash for it, you had an option to buy all other items even if you didn't have cash for them)
- Fixed fonts in inventory UI + made the font on "available blueprints" bigger
- Fixed a bug that blocked the game after pressing ALT+TAB while interacting with NPCs.
- Fixed a bug that made Players invulnerable after receiving hits from sawblades
- Fixed forced custom loadout on Sawblade-1 that replaced your equipped items with our defaults (sorry!)
- Wisconsin Death Drives ability cooldown reworked
- Disabled camera damping when playing with mouse + keyboard
- Dialogue overlay should fill the entire screen now
- Updated explosive barrel explosion
- Snow-3: more machine animation changes during the level (direction and damping), gameplay should be more fun now!
- Sawblade-1: adjusted saw sizes to match colliders
- Prison-3: more powerups to collect in the level's challenge

About This Game

Ritual: Crown of Horns is

Ritual: Crown of Horns is a slaughterhouse. A violent, fast-paced action game set in an alternate Wild West, an absurd, acid-fueled vision of hellish frontier. Inspired by a variety of unique takes on the Western genre, from Alejandro Jodorowsky’s "El Topo" and Clint Eastwood’s "High Plains Drifter" to cult "The Wild Wild West" TV series. It's a wild tale of an unlikey duo: a bounty hunter who comes back from beyond a grave, yearning to exact revenge on his homeland, and a witch who aids him with a series of powerful rituals to further her own secret goals.

We have

  • a unique auto-aiming system that distinctly sets itself apart from your average twin-stick shooters: instead of spraying and praying, you are an elite gunslinger who makes every shot count.
  • a satisfying arsenal: shotguns, six-shooters, rifles, crossbows, and a few surprises that are a little less era-appropriate.
  • outrageous enemies: brainwashed cultists, supernatural legendary creatures, bizarre murderous contraptions – you name it.
  • gear: mysterious capes, hoods and amulets that you can customize and get powerful buffs for your character.
  • creative spells and power-ups that can violently alter the way you approach each combat encounter.
  • plenty of insane levels for you to master, each complete with unique challenges tailored to push the combat system to its limits.
  • a unique gothic-horror-meets-weird-western artstyle.

It's 18XX

You were a lawman on a mission to track down a dangerous witch. Upon reaching your goal, you found yourself in a fatal ambush prepared by horned beast-like men. Your death was probably just collateral damage. Not one of your government supervisors cared. Now, brought back from beyond the grave by the dark magic of the witch you were supposed to take out, you find yourself in a forced alliance against a common enemy.

Understand the powers responsible for your misery and get rid of them once and for all. Make friends and enemies along the way. Visit places inspired by real locations in the United States and discover their myths. Look for symbols that the Land of the Free was based on and purify them. Ritual: Crown of Horns is a game about icons and myths, and tales we tell ourselves in order to make sense of our world and our identity. It’s about facing the unfaceable and living to tell the tale.
