"While it's graphics and gameplay seem dated (it's 14 years old), the story is still one of the best choice driven cyberpunk tales in gaming."

About This Game

The year is 2052 and the world is a dangerous and chaotic place. Terrorists operate openly - killing thousands; drugs, disease and pollution kill even more. The world's economies are close to collapse and the gap between the insanely wealthy and the desperately poor grows ever wider. Worst of all, an ages old conspiracy bent on world domination has decided that the time is right to emerge from the shadows and take control.

Key Features:

  • Real role-playing from an immersive 3D, first-person perspective. The game includes action, character interaction and problem solving.
  • Realistic, recognizable locations. Many of the locations are built from actual blueprints of real places set in a near future scenario.
  • A game filled with people rather than monsters. This creates empathy with the game characters and enhances the realism of the game world.
  • Rich character development systems: Skills, augmentations, weapon and item selections and multiple solutions to problems ensure that no two players will end the game with similar characters.
  • Multiple solutions to problems and character development choices ensure a varied game experience. Talk, fight or use skills to get past obstacles as the game adapts itself to your style of play.
  • Strong storyline: Built on "real" conspiracy theories, current events and expected advancements in technology. If it's in the game, someone, somewhere believes

System Requirements

Even if you're not a fan of conspiracy theories and cyberpunk, you should play Deus Ex. It's a game, no, it's a journey that everyone should experience. It masterfully combines FPS and RPG elements backed by captivating story and excellent gameplay. It really is a true classic. Deus Ex gets bonus points for giving players a choice of how to approach missions. You can get the job done the stealth way or going in guns blazing, it's up to you.

For me, the best game ever made.

Origionally played a pirate copy when it was first released back in 2000 just for something to do one night. I've then gone on to purchase the game maybe 3-4 times.

Completed the game so many times with every ending possible and I even have the soundtrack to the game on my phone. I can't remember the last game ive actually wanted to complete recently let alone several times.

The story line is absolutely fantastic, something games developers just dont seem to spend time on these days *cough* Destiny *cough* ...but also, the sheer volume in detail, there are so many hidden extras...like the Majestic 12 base hidden in the sewers in NYC. Modern games would have shipped that as DLC and it took me 3-4 play throughs to discover it.

One of the first games to offer a non linear play through, it gave you options on different ways to storm a building and even tested your morality by giving you the choice to kill or spare. I remember being amazed by being told off by your in game boss for going in the girls toilets for a quick sniff around, who would bother to code little things in like that these days?

Graphics are terrible now I admit, but pick yourself up a HD pack along with a copy of xpadder for joypad use and you'll quickly discover just how much you've been ripped off the last time you spunked 40-50 bucks on the latest console game.

Extremely entertaining stealth and sniping gameplay that is negligibly marred by the suspension-of-disbelief-shattering stupidity of the guards. The shooting is atrocious and the guns are boring, but interestingly enough, on high difficulty (where open gunfighting is non-viable regardless) this isn't even apparent. The story is so conspiracy-theory laden as to be comical, but merits a mention as an interesting cyberpunk tale.

One of the best PC games of all time, if not the best.
If you like RPG's this one is a game you must play.

Great engaging story, pretty difficult game but not owerwhelming.
Graphics are maybe a bit dated, but when you get into the story, you wont pay any attention to the graphics.

(If you do play this game and like it and you want to play the other Deus Ex games. Skip Invisible Wars!)

I shouldn't have to tell you that this game is absolutely bloody lovely regardless of its wonky late-nineties sensibilities. She's a child of her era, GRANDDAD, and don't you hold her down for wearing a trenchcoat and shades and bopping to Corey Hart!

Brilliant FPSRPG with literally the greatest villains of all time. Honestly, if you don't love Simons and Page's voices then you are not a human bean.

This classic was released in 2000, but you shouldn't be scared off by its age – on the contrary: Deus Ex is one of the cherries on the cake of pc gamings heyday; one of those titles you have to have played.

Deus Ex offers a unique and fantastic storyline of conspiracies in a dystopic world, which was made so absolutely beautiful and authentic by all those many details you can discover: conversations, e-mails, newspapers, books, bulletin news, sidequests – you name it. I could write an endless text about how superb the story is, but I don't want to spoil anything and everyone should discover it for themselves.

The gameplay also offers a great variety of possibilities to attain a goal. And that doesn’t limit to the question, if you should kill or avoid an enemy: There is always more than one way and often more than two. And some of the consequences don't occur at once, but later in the game.

Believe me: There is a reason why Deus Ex is always among the Top 10 of the best games of all time.

Heralding the golden age of PC gaming, Deus Ex is a game about depth, exploration, and strategy. One of the rare titles that exhibits video games in its truest form. A complete experience that demands reflection not just on gameplay and design, but your own life. Who are you, really? What exactly do you think you know? Play Deus Ex and find out.

So yeah. The graphics suck hard. Bit damn, the atmosphere, sound and story in this game is SO good. Even the gameplayu holds up. This game has got all the cool stuff like secret passages, freedom to do stuff your way, cool dialogue options (walk in to the girls-room for fun. You won't regret it) If you decide to enter a building using obscure jumping paths, you will notice in the end the developers actually designed everything. There is so much detail and attention to almost everything in this game. It might be my favorite game of all time...

If you like to feel bad ♥♥♥ in a cyber spy pre-apocalyptic world this is a must play. Stuff of legends.

Deus Ex is a classic of gaming, often considered the greatest PC game of all time. While I would give Thief II that honor, it's not hard to see why this game tops so many "best of" lists, and it's one of my personal favorites. This game may also be one of the best examples of why you shouldn't judge a book by it's cover, as it looks like absolute ♥♥♥♥, with freaky-looking human models, blocky levels, barf-inducing textures, and subpar voice acting. However, if you can get past all that, you'll quickly find that this game is something special.

Deus Ex appears to be an FPS on the surface, but it's really an FPS-RPG. Throughout the game you acquire skill points that you can use to upgrade your skill with certain weapon types (pistol, rifle, heavy, etc.) You can use any weapon you find and have room for, but to be even remotely competent with them, you'll have to upgrade the respective skill, which increases damage and accuracy, and occasionally adds some other benefits. There are also other skills you can upgrade, such as Computer, which allows you to hack ATMs for money and security terminals to deactivate cameras and reprogram turrets, and Lockpicking, which decreases the amount of disposable lockpicks you need to open a door. The great thing about Deus Ex is that there is no one correct way to play the game. Every skill in the game, with the exception of Swimming and arguably Environmental Training, is useful, and there is a way to beat any mission with any skillset. You could use Multitools to bypass a security keypad to open a door, or you could hack a security terminal and open it from there, or you could lockpick your way into a drawer with a datacube containing the code, or you could just blow the door open with an explosive. There is always more than one way to solve a problem, something that is very, very rare in even the best games out there.

The amount of depth this game has amazes me. Once I was in a high-rise apartment, and I decided to break the window and jump out, merely for the entertainment of seeing how far up I actually was. I instead landed on a balcony, lockpicking my way into a room with binoculars and a computer terminal containing interesting details about the lore of the game. My jaw was literally agape. I could not believe that such an obscure location would actually have something noteworthy in it. No matter how many times you play Deus Ex, you will always find something new, be it a new way to complete a mission or just a fun easter egg, and this makes the replay value extremely high. The game is massive, and I believe this to be in part due to the extremely low-budget graphics. Since so little time and money was spent on the look of the game, the mechanics could be polished to a mirror shine and the world expanded in a meaningful way, with things to find in every nook and cranny.

I would also be remiss not to mention the game's fantastic story. It's a wonder the game managed to be so compelling despite the awful voice acting, and it speaks to the quality of the writing that this was achieved. The characters you encounter are lovable, and the overarching plot is both extremely complex and full of twists and turns, which is why, in the interest of avoiding spoilers and laziness, I won't be providing a plot summary. You'll just have to find out for yourself.

Lastly, there is the music, which is phenomenal. Alexander Brandon's compositions are varied, memorable, and always fit the location and the themes of the story. On top of that, the music isn't just nice to listen to: they also serve a gameplay purpose. During the missions, the music that plays will normally be very ambient and fade into the background, but when enemies are alerted of your prescense (this game has optional stealth), the music will become more intense, not only to change the mood from that of quiet sneaking to fast-paced gunplay, but also to let you know the enemies are on to you even if you're too far away to see or hear them. The rest of the sound design is solid, with satisfying gun noises that make shooting satisfying if you have to get into a fight. The only sound that isn't good is the sound of assault rifle bullets hitting a wall, which is utterly dreadful. It sounds more like rain hitting the ground than bullets colliding with solid steel, and it takes you out of the intensity of combat.

Overall, Deus Ex's presentation has some problems, but the overall package is one of the deepest, most complex and most fun games ever made, and it also has the advantage of being utterly unique. No other game is quite like Deus Ex and few are as well-designed and compelling.

10/10
