What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Iocane Games is a small studio that is self publishing Beetle Uprising, but our team has been building games for decades. The game is nearly complete, and is fun to play, so we want to get it into players' hands as soon as possible. We would love to have the community's input on the stability and tuning of the game and see if there are new directions we should pursue. There are a lot of new missions we have in mind to add over the next few months.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We want to wrap up the content development and gameplay systems and tuning as quickly as we can. As we identify new systems that are needed to satisfy the community, we'd like to limit that to a few months more work. We are hoping to take the game to full release before the end of 2017.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“We know there will be a bunch of new combat missions and new map areas we want to add. Along with ramping the difficulty of exploring into those areas as a challenge to you to breed your Beetles well. There may be difficulty and loot table tuning needed so the longer game loop stays engaging. We will also make time to focus on performance issues and bug fixes. There will probably also be some UI refinement for ease of use. We will be adding even more visual variations to the beetles over time.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“By the time we get out of coming soon, we will have 6-7 combat missions. The Nest and item inventory are pretty much done, other than tuning. The Lot Map has some placeholder art that needs to be improved, especially as we add new missions. Not all the gameplay is available yet, but replaying gives you new random visual genetics to try out. We've built an auto-save system that should prevent lost progress if there are any stability issues.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“We expect to raise the price about 10-20% probably as we leave Early Access, once we finish all the new content.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We want fans of the game to participate on the Beetle Uprising Steam Community Hub pages. We'll be checking there often. Between working feverishly on delivering the rest of the game.”

Update: Multiple Save Games, Sandbox Mode, UI Updates

Here is a big update we've been working on for awhile. We hope you enjoy it.

  • You can now have multiple games saved at once. This can be handy if you want to go try out something extreme, but don't want to risk your original collection.
  • We added Sandbox Mode, which allows you unlimited Goop and Inventory, and Beetles don't die. You get all the eggs so you can try to breed with the best possible genes. And you start at max level. This allows you to explore the game and learn how the systems work. The original Campaign Mode is still available to challenge your management and strategy skills.
  • Added a new combat song that is dynamically arranged.
  • New Manual pages for Rock/Paper/Scissors style combat, Stat genetic side effects, Options, and the Game Shell.
  • Sorting makes a sound.
  • You get a little camera shake when Immolators explode.
  • You can delay the hover time for tooltips if they are getting in your way.
  • Improved Item Inventory details UI.
  • Mission 14 now drops the correct trophy on 3 stars.
  • Squashed "The Blueberry Bug". Users were reporting they were stuck placing an object, and the inventory count would increase. This is fixed.
  • The default screen resolution is now set to max. Some new players were seeing less than amazing graphics. Of course, you can still tweak your graphics settings using the Options menu.

Hotfix to Task-Reset Cheat

We decided to push out a fix to the Task-Reset Cheat ahead of schedule today. After you patch, any "stuck" tasks that you had previously mowed down to zero will now work again. The bug only kicked in if you had run the cheat on a completely mowed task. You will need to re-run the task-reset cheat once more after the patch downloads, to get them unstuck. Our apologies.

About This Game

You and the swarm are one. Your will is their will. Your thoughts, their thoughts. The great Matriarch sacrificed so that the swarm could continue here on this abandoned lot, YOUR new world. Well, that is if you can conquer it from those that wrongly deny your domination. From the relative safety of your nest, you will breed generations of beetles that will fan out over this world and claim it as your own. Unlock the secrets of your genetic potential through careful pairings of select members of your swarm. Learn new abilities and enhance the performance of your species over generations of offspring. Biting is a dependable attack that no beetle should underestimate, but what if you could spit caustic bile, drain your enemies' vital fluids or perhaps explode in a wondrous shower of carapace flavored shrapnel! This and more are only a few choice alleles away...should you discover them.

But your domination isn't all biting and slashing. You must rear your beetles and tend to their needs of food, comfort and health. As you conquer the lot, you will retrieve the necessary resources like seeds, berries, and the ever-enjoyable rotted flesh. Send out your beetles to explore new areas, learn of their defenses and treasures. If your chosen champions are up for the task, they may well find rare items to aid the swarm in its rise to power; like a soothing bar of soap, a rubber ball, or some nutritious brains! Nothing tickles the ganglia like comfort foods.

Explore this world and your own existence. Develop exotic looks as you collect and unlock new rare physical features like horns, spikes, ridges, colors, textures, and finishes. Beetles are unpredictable in their looks and size, and your swarm is every bit as spectacular. Each beetle you raise will be uniquely yours, a master of statistics, looks, and stature.

Taking over each territory will require specialized abilities and expert leadership as you take legions of your swarm-mates into battle. Feel the fluid joy of your horde in battle. You don’t push individuals about like puppets, you usher them about as a maestro would lead a symphony building up to a crescendo and crashing them upon your enemies like a tidal wave of destruction.

Key Features:

  • Play at your own speed. Accelerate or stop time as you see fit. Take your time and consider your options like a great leader.
  • Unique creations. Each beetle you raise is a useful piece of art. Looks and abilities are not tied to stats. Small and strong, large and weak, colorful and cruel...all are possible.
  • Fluid combat. Combat is very fluid and real-time. The only thing more fun than herding cats...is herding beetles! Keep on your toes and tend to your swarms.
  • Strategic planning throughout. It’s not just which areas to conquer, but who to send on tasks, who should breed and who will end up in the Goop Juicer.
