Over deze content

The Acela Express hauls North America’s famous Amtrak high speed rail service between Washington D.C. and New York City. The Acela Express is highly detailed and includes all the familiar features of the real thing, including the tilting system which enables the train to take bends at high speed.

The Acela Express is the only train in North America which exceeds the Department of Transportation’s 125mph minimum speed for true high speed rail services. It was designed specifically to operate along the Northeast Corridor serving the bustling cities of Washington D.C, Boston, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York City, and can reach up to 150mph though it is restricted to lower speeds for much of the route. Each Acela Express set comprises two power cars running on 11,000 volts via overhead power cables, plus First and Business Class coaches. The Acela power cars develop 6,000 horsepower and with one at each end of the train, high speeds can be reached and maintained over long distances, with the in-built tilt mechanism allowing bends to be taken at speed without passenger discomfort. The Acela shares some design features with the French TGV, though its passenger cars do not share central bogies like the TGV, and they are heavier due to Federal Rail Administration safety standards.

PLEASE NOTE: The Acela Express requires the Northeast Corridor Expansion Pack (available separately) to run.

Acela Express train set in Amtrak livery with power car, first class car, business class car and café car. Acela features operating tilt function, authentic sound effects, opening front hatch, flashing ground lights and detailed cab interior including functioning digital instrument readouts and in-cab signaling.

1st of all: Amazing looking model! Great features! I'm going to start out with the Pros 1st: Great Looking Model, Nice Features, Outstanding Paint Scheme, Runs Smoothly, The Tilt System is awesome, and much more! Cons: When the Cruise Control is activated, the Locomotive will slowly come to a stop, and the Cruise Control Lever doesn't work because the arrow that indicates what speed you are going on the speedometer is missing. The "Onboard Cab Signaling System" is inaccurate for example: When the speed limit is 150 m.p.h., the system says it is 100 m.p.h. when you know it's not. The Q hot key doesn't work when the alerter is initiated. On other routes you have to disable the "Onboard Cab Signaling System" because it will say "Restricted" the whole time. It would be nice if the Mirrors would work on the Acela which fold in and out. There is no Passenger View in the cars. The Horn, Bell, and Engine Sound need to be improved.
Overall, it's is a great model, but it needs to be improved.

Love the train, and you can take it on a number of tracks, just so long as they support other high-speed trains like the ICE-3 or Class 395.

I bought the Acela back in 2013, and boy am I impressed with the updates they have made. The Acela now has the current Acela paint scheme, so if you want the previous version, hopefully you have a backup of it somewhere.

I'll point out main things they have fixed:

Horn - Big issue for me. It looped correctly in the cab, but did not loop at all in the exterior mode. They also changed the horn, makes it sounds much better.

X360 Controller issues - For me, I could never leave the cab in the Acela using the controller. You could use the functions fine, but as soon as you wanted to transition from Cab view to outside view, it wouldn't change. This also happens with a few locomotives I have now. Everything is fixed now, works great on a controller.

Features they added:

New Headlights - Headlights look much better now, they have a really nice Lens flare that appears when you are in front of the locomotive. Real nice touch.

Pantograph Sparks - This may seem like nothing, but this feature is really cool. As you drive along, you can see spark reflections on the pantograph. It also emits a big area of blue light around it, and looks really nice. I personally think it emits too much light, but is still a nice feature.

They probably have fixed and added more features with this loco, but I'm really liking the update for the Acela. It once made a beautiful model suffer from terrible scripting, to an absolute model with great scripting and features. The only thing I can think of to add to this model would be an interior for the coaches, would be a fantastic addition.

Had this since TS2012, but it's been changed/revamped/retrofitted/whatever word you want to use since then. Some changes good, some not-so.

From what I've observed overall, the unit is very easy to control as one'd expect, being a MU. Visual and modeling details have always been a personal high point, with the animation being good, too. Some touches are here and there like the panto sparks, updated livery, and the lens flare as another user has noted. I wouldn't be absolutely sure but I think the specs have been redone since then too, like how in the past it'd top out at 147 MPH in the sim, when the real one, as also noted in promotional material of this DLC here and there, can go up to 162 or 165. Seems to speed up a lot faster so it can be assumed they gave it a bit more juice.

Other bugs have been fixed when you load a scenario partway through that had to do with the Cruise Control, displays, and other cosmetic functions. The "Acela Express" scenario was also optimized a while ago, although the last time I played it, it still suffered here and there from an AI train desyncing and derailing offscreen, the player being held up at Newark by a signal and thus not be able to satisfy the timetable, or be unable to finish the scenario at all with a set of points always set against you.

If you also own or plan to own the New York to New Haven DLC, there are a few more Career Scenarios available using the Acela there too, although the Achievements seem to be broken at the time I write this.

Now, some of what prevents this DLC from being more perfect (in my eyes, anyway):
  • Cruise Control is broken; it either takes longer to kick in than from before this DLC was reworked, or it doesn't at all—the Class 390 is a better example of how it should function.
  • Pantographs can be a bit wonky; by default, the front pantographs are used relative to the direction being traveled, when it should be the rear ones. The cab switch to choose a pantograph doesn't appear to be animated either, and whatever I do seems to cause an indefinite loop of raising and lowering the "unused" pantograph.
  • Carriages leave a lot to be desired; while I did note the modeling was nice, inconsistencies from the real thing include the lack of the Business Class "End" Car (it's like the First Class Car, with two doors rather than four), how the carriages are generally flipped as opposed to how they should be in consists (ex. the First Class Car's—and wouldbe Business Class End Car's—doors should be adjacent to the Power Car, the two middle Business Class Cars, seat-wise, should face away from each other, and the Cafe Car should also be flipped relative to how it currently is (to give an idea, the windows, on the side with less windows, should be closer to the closest Power Car)).
  • In addition to above, they lack a passenger view.
  • The horn does not automatically turn on the bell like it does on the ACS64 (as well as how it did in the original Kuju/MS TS).
  • Whatever updates done to the DLC also messed with the lights; the marker lights (the red ones) on the opposite power car don't always turn on when the front ones are switched on, and the ditch lights can either be on or off; they don't flash or alternate like previously (at least for me).
  • I probably don't even need to mention the sounds, save for the horn and bell really (though, this is only minor personally).

Otherwise, it's a must-have if you're going to drive on either of the Northeast Corridor Route DLCs, especially when you consider the workshop scenarios available here for them. Too if you just like fast trains like I do.
