Be ready to put your pilot helmet on, for you are about to go on a long ride, at least that's the hope. While appearing to be a detailed flight simulator/combat game, Hawx 2 fails miserably at reaching that target. It become apparent quite quickly that Hawx 2 is simply put an arcade shoot em' up with planes, and that's unfortunate.
At first glance, Hawx 2 is quite enjoyable. As the player you are given the chance to unlock several cool planes and fly over a vast amount of different terrains. But this is also the fallpoint of Hawx 2. Every plane will feel almost exactly the same with some minor adjustments in speed and manuverability. The terrains and environments themselves, while pleasing to look at, really offer no uniqueness. Deserts have no sand storms, the arctic north offers no turbulence, and the list goes on. Planes are also unrealistically handled, each having 60 missiles to take down enemy planes. In fact, the game doesn't favor tactics or strategy, but going head in and shooting up your enemies with your 60 missiles and unlimited gun ammo.
If you think story may be the game's redeemer, think again. The story is nothing short of uninteresting and boring, and if the game is trying to make you feel attached to any character, it does a pretty poor job at doing that. Let it just be said that this game, while a sequel, offers little to nothing in the story department. The missions are also repetitive, telling you to shoot x amount of planes, bombing some tanks, and then shooting another x amount of planes.
The game's biggest pitfall is it's horrible online functionality. It would perhaps be fun to play the game with a couple of friends if the game actually worked online. But server failure and matchmaking are just commonalities with this game. It doesn't help when the game pretends it cannot find your friends.
What's left is but an empty carcass marketed to be an action simulator flight game when it completely misses the mark. The game is definitively not a simulator, and the flight aspect is simply not detailed enough to make it wortwhile. Unless you just love shooting at endless streams of planes, you should do yourself the favor and stay away from this title.
