This is a great game! but be aware; you may have to do some tweaking to get it working.
The game suffers from a terrible framerate bug on newer systems that makes it literally unplayable, however it can be fixed.
My thoughts on the game itself are at the bottom.
---Fix 1: Windows 7---
If you are running windows 7 you may be able to fix the game via changing the font localisation files, instructions to do this are here: http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2803612
This won't fix the bugs on Windows 8 but it might be good to do anyway.
---Fix 2: Windows 8 and Windows 7---
If you're running windows 8 or if the above doesn't work then download a program called DXWnd found here: http://sourceforge.net/projects/dxwnd/
- After extracting the file run the 'dxwnd' .exe
- A little blank window will open, select the 'edit' menu and click 'add'
- A window with a bunch of options and tabs will open, fill them out as follows:
- "NAME:" = Robin Hood (can be anything you like)
- "PATH:" = C:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\common\Robin Hood\Game.exe
Note: you may have the game installed at a different location eg. "Program Files (x86)"
That's it, Hit OK and you should see 'Robin Hood' appear as an option from the window that was blank before.
- Select it and go >edit>run and the game will run smoothly
You will have to launch the game using this program or have DXWnd open when launching it from steam every time.
DXWnd is a hook program that you can use to get a lot of old games running smoothly on new systems, it won't hurt to replace the font files anyway if you still have some problems (in Fix 1). I didn't create DXWnd nor was I the one who worked out that it fixes the game. Sourceforge.net
is a trustworthy site for developers and you can get more support from the guy who made the program there if you need it.
This fix isn't perfect, I get grapical artifacts from the mouse on the menus and it's crashed once but otherwise it's run perfectly so far. Resolution looks a bit blurry, I'll add a way to fix that if I find a mod or work it out.
As for the game itself. This was one of my favourites as a kid! You have a small team of robin hood and his merry men that you move around like a traditional RTS, each unit you control has 3 or so abilities which are mostly unique. Robin can knock people out with a punch, frier tuck can tie people up with rope, little john can carry bodies etc. you'll have to combine these abilities to get through situations. You will want to avoid fighting, once a character is locked in combat it becomes dificult to escape and they'll slowly die, some characters can't fight at all; so the game is about stealth. Things happen slowly in this game, abilities are executed slowly, it's all a bit sluggish and clunky but that's not really a detriment. You'll be waiting for the ideal time to make your move and planning out your aproach. The sluggishness might feel lame for some people but it works fine for what you're trying to achieve. The levels are very well designed, they're open ended and have plenty of little areas that are a bonus. You'll clear one area and in doing so work out a solution for another area, these areas often wrap around and encircle each other. You can clear a level very quickly after you've figured things out but the first time around it may take hours. It's very satisfying.
If you aren't a fan of stealth or clicky isometric games this isn't for you. It's about tactics and stealth, not combat.
Their aren't many games in this genre and this game is up there with some of the best. Isometric stealth games are dead now but it's well worth the few dollars it goes for on steam to try them out with this one.
props to thenikus for finding the fix for this game:http://steamcommunity.com/app/46560/discussions/0/35220315956625877/
