I first watched a lets play of this game and another mansion horror game: Pineview Drive. I wanted to give Pineview Drive a negative review because it sucks and is pointless, but that would mean having to pay for it. I already owned Scratches, so lets give this game a positive review instead.

This game is great.

Honestly it's not for everyone, but seriously it's great. Unlike Pineview Drive there is an actual story with real weight to it. Everything has a reason and a consequence, and it's meangingful to a character that you learn to care about.

The game is slow, dated interface and graphics, and requires a lot of reading without voice over. That's a drawback to most people, but it's atmosphere is great and meaningful. It has a couple puzzles and very few jumpscares but they are in places that actually matter to the story and give you a memorable experience unlike a certain other game.

Scratches has a heavy story with not a whole lot of game action, definately not everyone is into that, but this game is beautifully catered to the people who are into that. Great atmosphere, very imersive, great story.

I am going to be completely honest. I normally don't like Horror games are Point & Click. I prefer the ability to freely walk around and explore things. But Scratches more than made up for it by being so incredibly immersive. The example that most readily comes to mind is the skeleton, which I won’t tell you where or why you find it. But that skeleton felt so genuine and seemed to be crying out to me. I actually felt like I was looking at a real corpse. Very few Horror games have managed to so deeply captivate me, so Scratches definitely gets a 10/10 from me.

In this game, you play as a drunk man with glaucoma as you attempt to navigate a mansion built for an elf. Your friend Jerry calls you and hangs up after three seconds, and you are tasked with trying to collect and put together mundane objects while somber orchestral music plays. This game has a nice array of challenges, from trying to walk in a straight line to trying to interact with an item without accidentally leaving the room. Your main character has a touching backstory; due to a tragic accident he can only look in 45-degree angles and has a hard time making eye contact with the furniture. I love how the game crashes a lot, too. Really gets into your head. Five dirt stars.

Game was sadly lacking any fear factor after you get over the initial spooky atmosphere the main mansion has going on. After that it's just a repetitive point and click adventure involving calling your BFF Jerry so you can get on with the story. The game literally limits you on doing things unless you call him, doesn't matter if you know what to do or not. The entire game sort of has that issue honestly. EG: Can't get this key from a pot until you have seen it in photo even if you click to investigate the pot. That coupled with the lame "twist" ending left me wondering why I bothered to GameFAQs through the game. Enjoyed the voice acting though, the British accents of the entire cast were quite pleasant.

Seriously a dark and creepy game. Everybody should play this. It does have some difficult puzzles in it. But if you use common sense, you'll be able to figure most of them out.

Currently still playing this but what I can say about it now are some pretty noticible flaws. The games pacing is extremely slow; that can make the game drab and flat out boring at times, lack of focus makes exploring the house a chore as you can be sifting through tons of books and notes and random junk; that's made even more irritating by little to no indication of your objectives or how to complete them. The atmosphere and environments are extremely well done and fully realized, they didn't skimp out on the art of the game but the story is uninteresting and the draw of the house being haunted never really sinks in (at least for me it didn't). The space feels too big as you have dozens of rooms to explore (again this was probably done for the realism as it's supposed to be a victorian style house). The puzzles are confusing because of again poor direction and the the limited controls means that searching the house takes forever but is pretty intuitive and works well within the game world at least. Highlights being the art and environments as well as atmosphere but the story is lackluster, some puzzles don't really make sense and the controls and UI are frustrasting. Just my thoughts, will finish it though. I'm sure there's some good to be found, maybe you'll have to dig though.

An exercise in tedium and insane logic.

This is a point and click horror game similar to games like Myst, but with no sense of consistancy or logic to keep things going. Story driven, and reliant on the whims of the protagonist instead of player decisions, your progression is limited by the stubborness of the character. Want to open a locked door? How about you look inside those pots for a key. Nope, he's not interested until you find a hidden photo that vaguely indicates that a key might be in a pot. Then you can look in the pot.

Most of the time, the correct course of action seems to be to call Jerry, a character who gets increasingly annoyed at the protagonist's inability to do anything themselves. I can certainly relate. After playing for a short amount of time, I'd be very surprised if the protagonist can go to the toilet without asking Jerry for help. After nearly every task on the first day, you need to phone him. Open a door, phone Jerry. Find a newspaper, phone Jerry. Lights don't work, phone Jerry. Phone Jerry. Phone Jerry. 1.5 hours were spent simply wandering around the house clicking on everything trying to find something that might move things forward, then calling Jerry, then trying to find the thing that was not interesting before but is now.

Most of this does not advance the plot at all, but is simply dealing with the hassle of moving into a new house. The first couple of hours were spent establishing that the character is stranded in the house with no power. A little information about evil masks and creepy tribes are hinted at, but then cast aside to deal with the main, super spooky plot of calling in an electrician. When you eventually go down into the spooky cellar to try and fix it yourself, with a creepy atmosphere and tense music...nothing happens.

Interacting with anything is limited by the ludricous thought processes of the protagonist. Want to pick up that tool over there? Nope, it's junk. Nope, there's no reason for you to carry it. But you'd better pick up that can lid, it might come in useful. Wander around the house with a knife? Good idea! Go outside to open the garage now that you have the key? No it's raining, and the character doesn't feel like it. Climb inside a creepy furnace without any cause to do so? Absolutely. Puzzles are rediculously obscure, and variate between pixel hunting and using everything with everything, usually to achieve very simple tasks. 1.5 hourse before anything resembling a plot hook shows up.

While there were some interesting bits here and there, it wasn't worth trudging through the awful puzzles to get to them. Even when scary bits appeared, they were jump scares, with the musical stingers being far more intense than the actual events. I stopped caring about the story very quickly.

In short, save your time and money. For a scary, atmospheric horror game with a plot you discover as you play, go for Amnesia. If you are looking for a deep story that will chill you to the bone, go read a horror book. That way you don't have to deal with endless fetch quests.

Very atmospheric and immersive horror adventure, if you let yourself be immersed. Otherwise, you will probably just get frustrated with, sometimes, illogical puzzles and "aimless" wandering.

I usually do not enjoy point-and-click games whose puzzles are solely inventory-based (what I call gather-and-combine). I get insanely bored and there's nothing I hate more than go around "pixel-hunting".
That said... even though Scratches is pretty much that kind of game, I enjoyed it very, VERY much. Scratches has a wonderfully creepy/melancholy atmosphere that wraps you up while you unravel the story. It doesn't use (because it doesn't need) the typical "jump scares" to make you feel it. The music (and sound effects in general) is exquisitely appropriate and increases the effect, accompanying the story without being too obvious and without falling in the "cheap horror flick" category. In fact, the first time that this game managed to raise my pulse, it was mostly because of the music.
This game is a work of art and I fully recommend it.

Psychological horror at its finest. The story is enticing and very unsettling as it unravels, and the soundtrack accompanies it brilliantly. There are a few issues, such as the strange jumps in logic regarding certain things which needs to be done, and I've consulted a walthrough a couple of times. The game is all about triggers, and can't progress without certain things having been done first. While this is a bit annoying, it's well worth it in terms of story. Another downside is the short length of it (it couldn't possibly be any longer, but I wish it was - it was done in about six-seven hours), and the fact that you can't explore more things with it being a point and click game.

That being said, the game is great, and I definitely recommend it to those who enjoy good old fashioned horror, the unsettling kind which is more than just jump scares and loud noises.

Truthfully, I was kind of disappointed with this one. Managed to finish it under 10 hours, especially with some parts being really repetitve - like having to call Jerry fifteen times a minute. Story had a lot of promise at the beginning, it really could have gone many, many places. Many beautiful, wonderful, absolutely terrifyingly horrible places. But it didn't. At all. The game technically only half stuck to it's own original premise, truthfully. There were literally TWO plot twists in the last fifteen minutes of the game, and the ending was, unforunately, utterly unclimactic. Shame, because, as I said, the game had a lot of promise. Couple the story disappointment with the fact that the controls are ridiculously difficult to work and are infuriating to the point I considered just stopping the game altogether a few times and it's not great. On the brighter side, the atmosphere remained pleasantly chilling, mystery was intriguing and puzzles honestly require you to think a bit and manipualte the world around you. Overall, maybe 4/10. Wouldn't spend more than $5 on it, sorry.

Very intriguing beginning with a really cool mystery story that gets more and more interesting the more you play it. However, became frustrating near the end with having to check and recheck and triple check EVERYTHING in your inventory to make sure you didn't miss anything. With a somewhat weak, convoluted and dissatisfying ending. It's a shame because it could have been an awesome game and would've earned a solid thumbs up from me if not for the ending and the frustration that went beyond just 'difficult to figure out.' Nigh unfinishable without a guide.

I thought this was a nice horror game like Amnesia, in which you can walk with ASDW freely in an isolated creepy house, but it's actually just a search-and-find game. You only get to look around while standing still in one place and if you click somewhere, you go there and stand still again, so if you want to go from the backyard to the frontyard, you have to click many times before getting there. Therefore I felt a bit deceived, though maybe I should have read reviews first. Still, it was a scary experience playing the game, because I didn't know what was coming and the ambience just killed me. Now that I played through it all, I guess I can never experience that feeling again though because I already know what will happen.

I guess you can compare this game to a thriller movie while Amnesia, the kind of game I expected this one to be, is more like a horror movie. So if you are too scared to play real horror games but you still like creepy stories, this might be something for you.

Recommended with some caveats: the game is an often tense, but not horrific, atmospheric experience that is unfortunately marred by some very obtuse puzzles. Certain parts of the game's story won't progress until you do something specific, and it's not always clear what you're supposed to do. In one case you simply have to use the telephone, but there's nothing telling you that.

It's a point and click in the old-school Myst style, where you move through largely static environments and uncover the story gradually while working through puzzles. The old house is spooky and beautifully detailed, and has held up pretty well graphically consdering the age of the game. It can still offer an engrossing old school point and click experience, but it comes with the downsides of old school obtuse adventure game logic. Be prepared to look up some of the puzzles and don't expect a lot of horror and you should enjoy this.

Meh. Good atmosphere, potentially impossible to figure out what to do at certain points without the help of a guide. Somewhat outdated. Good story. Bonus points for thalidomide. 6/10 since it was only $2 on steam.
