bring your guns, bring your knives, and bring your focus. this game demands it all!
metro 2033 is a singleplayer first person shooter from now defunct publisher THQ. this game is set in a post-apocalyptic soviet russia specifically moscow. the survivors of the nuclear war that are now living the winter in the subways and sewers of the city are in a desperate war for survival against mutants, nazi's, rival bands of bandits, nightmares beyond beliefe, and the fabrics of their once mighty nation: communism.
you play as artyom once such survivor who is cast as a reluctant hero that must deliever dire warnings to what is elft of the russian government and the russian military about the encroaching threat of a new and sinister threat. on his way he will explore and witness firsthand the plights of the russian people and the desperation in which they have cast themselves into. he will see horrors beyond imagination, and meet a vast colorful cast of characters ranging from the aloof and reckless to the stoic and philisophical.
visually the game is superb for its time and still holds up reasonably well, the dank sewers and the harsh nuclear winter wastelands above represent themselves well and do a good job of depicting how dead everything actually is. this is a double edged sword however as while this is the game intent it may seem like a very bleak and dreary backdrop for an otherwise solid game. however the design of characters themselves in the game has a creepy vibe to it with eyes tracking your every motion. to the point where some chaarcters have them bug out of their head almost. its very creepy and can sometimes lead you to thinking a character might be insane or posessed
the game can be played one of two ways. the game can be played stealthily with you using shaodws, silenced weapons, and careful patience and secondary routes to bypass obstacles and enemies. or it can be played as a standard run of the mill shooter.
the twist to this formula is two fold; the first is in the ammo itself. certain high grade ammunition is used as currency, it can also be used as ammunition. careful use of ammo pays of big as a result in letting you buy the equipment you want or need while doing the opposite will make you wish you had not. the second comes in the form of above ground sections of the game. while above ground the player must wear an air filtration system and filters must be exchanged manually. having enough ai is a requirement to survive and if your maks is ever broken in combat you will need to restart from a checkpoint, or a saved game, or scramble madly with a precious few seconds to get another that might be lying around.
the games difficulty essentially comes down to three things. the strength of AI/weapons, the amount of ammunition you will find and sell/buy things with/for, and the amount of air in each filter. lower difficulties are total cakewalks but the two highest difficulties range ahrd and ranger easy will see you dying from two lucky hits and having to go through sections of the game begging the game to throw you a few extra bullets for your favourite gun. guns themselves and melee weapons are all fairly useful and all have their pro's and con's making your weapon choice important when passing through a tough section of the game.
THE LAST PARAGRAPH BEING SAID
the DLC which adds range mode (which is free) also adds two guns the volt driver and the heavy automatic shotgun. the former of those two breaking the game fairly badly due to its high sell value and powerful attacks. at the final mission i had hundred of rounds to spare and could have probably killed a few hundred more enemies before finally begging for ammo and was more than capable of felling any foe.
the audio for the game is on par with anything you can expect from a modern game and the voices sound good. nothing more i can really add here, sorry. things go boom, beasts howl, human enemies swear, crude vehicles and machines whine and groan. this being said some voice acting feels dead and free of emotion. this perhaps though is intended and ment to further display how depressing things are in the tunnels of moscow. you can be the judge yourself
the game however is atmospheric and the achievements range from the mundane freebie to the frustrating and hard. and ultimately as a person with 100% achievement complation on it, consider the game a worthwhile experience. artyom takes four and a half bong hits.. out of 5 XXXXx/XXXXX
