Altitude is now free!

5. september

Altitude is now completely free. There is no full version to purchase: new players will automatically gain access to all of Altitude's planes and perks as they level up.

Widescreen Support: Altitude's native resolution has been updated from 4:3 to 16:9 (widescreen). Players can now see 25% farther ahead of their plane horizontally and about 6% less far vertically.

Expanded custom server support:

Server Console Commands:
modifyTournament <player> <team> - for adjusting tournament participants while a tournament is in progress (-1=not part of tournament, 0=left team, 1=right team)
overrideBallScore <leftScore> <rightScore> - for manually adjusting scores in ball mode
overrideSpawnPoint <player> <x> <y> <angle> - for dynamic spawn positions in custom game modes
* any spawn attempts by the playerId associated with <player> will use x/y/angle instead of a normal spawning location
* pass x=0,y=0,angle=0 to clear the override and resume normal spawning rules for a target player, otherwise overrides are cleared on map change (after "mapLoading" but before "mapChange") and on player disconnection

Servers can now disallow (or enforce) the use of random plane configurations via a disallowedPlaneRandomTypes block. Edit launcher_config.xml and just before the line starting with "<mapList..." add a block like this (note: this example blocks all random and non-random configurations, effectively preventing any spawning):

<PlaneRandomType name="non_random" />
<PlaneRandomType name="custom_random" />
<PlaneRandomType name="full_random" />

Server JSON log message updates:
"kill" now includes "victimPositionX","victimPositionY","victimVelocit yX","victimVelocityY"
"powerupPickup" now includes the powerup's "velocityX","velocityY" at time of pickup

Clients will now automatically leave a server after 5 minutes of idle time only if the server is full (for non-full servers, clients will leave after 60 idle minutes).

1DE (objective) game mode timers have been updated to encourage team play:
* Increased bomb plant time from 1.5 seconds to 3 seconds
* Increased bomb defuse time from 3 seconds to 4 seconds
* Increased bomb detonate time from 14 seconds to 22 seconds

Altitude is mostly dead now, but if you can get it cheap and a group of friends to play it with you it is a lot of fun.

A few years ago I had a lot of fun with this game. Not sure if it's still alive/active or whatever and I can't exactly find out since my account is just, I don't know, gone? It's weird.

It was really fun, though. Like a lot of games that have an overall account level, though, it wasn't the most balanced. Later upgrades and planes were just, you know, objectively better than starting things. The ships aren't necessarily rock-paper-scissors in design but there are elements like that to them. Having said that, the starting ship is probably the best one, which is good for beginners.

Regardless, the ships were balanced enough that you could play whatever and probably be fine in most situations. The game modes were varied enough. You had death match and team death match, yeah, but there was also a mode where you destroyed an enemy base, and another where you effectively played soccor with the space ships. I really liked the last one, but they were all fun and I'd play whatever when I did.

Controls were fine, graphics were fine, sounds were fine. The only problem I ever encountered were some latency issues, where people would just appear to teleport somewhere else or where you were clearly disconnecting (everyone was falling or flying into walls).

Yeah, every now and then I boot this up and try to figure out my old account, or to make my old account work, but it never happens. Had a lot of good times and I would totally play some more, if not a lot, should I ever fix that. Good game, if you see it on sale, do check it out. Assuming it's still alive. It might not be!

The edit: game is mostly dead except for old elitists, apparently. Shame. Guess they are a pretty closed off community and not friendly to newbs. Oh well. RIP altitude.

I just love this game. Unfortunately it's ruined by the elitism of the community :(

Couple days ago I was scrolling through F2P games on Steam and saw Altitude. I downloaded and installed it. I played the tutorial and few games against bots and decided to try online against real people. At the beginning everything went great. I was actually pretty good at it. At this point, I thought that this may be the best F2P I've ever played. Well, I was wrong.

I saw this guy, Mr.Step0[-fu] kicking players out of the server. He said that noobs should not be playing online. However, he himself was on the bottom of the scoreboard. When I asked something like "Then why are you here?", he replied that the gamemode is all about passing so score does not matter. Ok, I understand that. But then he said that Altitude was better when it was not free and now there are ***holes all over the place. And he added, that he meant me. Then I was like "I'm an ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ 'cause I don't want to kick noobs out of the server just because they are new in the game?". He didn't reply.

On the next round, he was on the enemy team and I just wrecked him. Destroyed. When I killed him over and over again, he decided to start a vote to kick me. Aaaand I got kicked. Altitude has a really small community and this guy was friends with almost everybody in the server so of course I got kicked. He has played this game before it was free so he thinks that he is somehow above everyone who started playing when the game became free.

The server I was playing on, was the only one that I liked and the only one where my ping wasn't too high. Now I cannot play the game online anymore 'cause that one guy is playing there like 24/7 and everytime I connect, he starts a vote to kick me and I get kicked + banned temporarily.

If you ever decide to play this game online, make sure that you keep your mouth shut and practice a lot against bots before you go online. I made a mistake when I tried to defend new players from hardcore-1337-nolife players and it did cost me an amazing online game experience.

Sorry for bad English, as you can see from my profile, I'm from Finland and I do not speak English too often. Also, it's 3:13 AM here and I should be sleeping, not writing reviews. I'm feeling a little bit tired X_X
