Maybe i'm blinded by nostalgia, but I don't care. This game is exceptionally good for all those who seek a hard core RPG experience with a quirky plot and badass dragons.

The game runs great on my windows 8.1 gaming laptop, with no errors. I have read some negative reviews which claim to have problems getting the game to launch. If the steam version has some error that I am not aware of, then there is always the option to purchase Gothic II: Gold Edition from GOG.

Great game, runs perfectly on Win7. If you have troubles with starting it, close all background programs. And if this game chrashes during the loading screen, go to steam/steamapps/common/gothic2/system and rename Vdfs32e to something else and run Gothic 2 as admin.

My personal favourite installment of the Gothic series.

- 30h of a solid walkthrough (probably longer if it's your 1st time playing the game)
- Fairly big gameworld divided into 3 (+1) areas
- Tons of sidequests, "secrets" and dark mushrooms <3
- Solid soundtrack and dark atmosphere

The only thing that bothered me was the AI, which is easy to outplay once you notice the pattern.
Given the fact it's 12 year old game it's definitely worth a try if you're not familiar with it.

Off you go now, Xardas awaits.

Bought the game on sale because I owned it when it first came out and remembered it being hard and unforgiving but fun. Installed game, started it up immediately it froze my mouse. Even CTRL-ALT-DEL didn't help. It wouldn't close when prompted to with keyboard commands and it wouldn't release the mouse. Restarted the computer, tried it again. Did the same thing. Looked around for an answer. Yep, there's a patch/upgrade/mod on a german website with german instructions on what looks like a fairly lengthy process to install. Save yourself the headache of fighting with this thing to get it to run. It wasn't THAT fun.

This looks like a great game. The steam version is complete and utter garbage and I have just wasted 5 hours trying to get this to work.

Gothic II is a gigantic game in a small world. The trick that the devs pulled to make the game seem so enormous was to make use of absolutely every nook and cranny on the map. Most of these places aren't even relevant to the main story; you can plow through the game several times over and still stumble across something new hidden in an easily missed gap between rocks or behind a waterfall at the bottom of a deep valley. Since the game doesn't throw powerful items or experience at you like lots of the loot-fest RPGs out there, the (usually) small rewards secreted away across the island are always satisfying to discover. This and the fact that the game is largely loading screen- and objective marker-free makes the whole world feel alive and supremely explorable. Just be careful; the game will hold your hand for a grand total of five seconds before booting you into a world where all of the local fauna have it out for you and will absolutely WRECK you if you aren't familiar with the somewhat clunky combat system. It gets easier later on but the challenge is always there. Don't be scared though; the danger just makes exploring that much more rewarding.

I killed a dragon with dozens of summoned goblin skeletons. 10/10 would do it again.
PS: for Win 7+ users you have to patch it first (please refer to DaniLch guide), and it will work just fine.

Gothic II. What a great, rewarding and exciting game.

After a series of events, you break out of the colony with friends you made there. Freedom, right? No.
You weren't the only one to break out. Most bandits got out too and started to rob and murder innocent citizens of Khorinis. People see you as a nobody yet again, but slowly you gain respect and eventually become a respected man across the island, saving Khorinis from an evil force that's about to struck it.

Gameplay is improved in many ways over the first game. Controls don't feel stiff. Combat is fun and never gets old: you hold LMB and use WASD to swing your weapons in different directions, no button mashing involved.
You can join different factions: Paladins, Mercenaries and Mages. All of them are very different and have a lot of faction-related quests, so it's worth it to beat the game multiple times.
You visit a lot of places in the game: the main island of Khorinis, the colony from the first game (which is now abandoned, grey and full of orcs at every step that'll murder you in mere seconds), swampy Jarkendar from the expansion and some other minor ones. All locations are unique and different, NPCs have their own chores and the game feels alive. I'll be honest, I got immersed. I spent hundreds of hours wandering around and finding cool quests and secrets.

Gothic II is my favourite RPG and I beat it many times. It's the experience I will never forget.

For Windows 8 users what needs to be done is to open task manager and end processes 'Logitech SetPoint Event Manager' and 'Windows Host Process (rundll32)'. In the game folder the gothic2.exe must be run in compatibility for Win XP (sp2), and in steam the 'steam overlay' must be disabbled for this game. Also running it in window (setted up in Gothic.ini) shows 100% of the game (in full screen line at the top is hidden).

For Win 7 I assume it will be simmilar, but the Windows host process might be called differently (perhaps just rundll32).

But apart from that it is an amazing game, even today :-)

This game is everything. I remember , when I was a little child, I used to play it. I missed this game and bought it on steam, and Im happy that I have done that. This game is a deep sorry - RPG, and compared to the new RPG games, this game offers a more hardcore and more realistic gameplay. I would reccomend it to every RPG lover.

Loved this game as a kid, coming back to it later it's still pretty good. Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit runs it fine.

The controls are super-awkward if you've gotten used to modern layouts, though.

Let me first state that I'm running Windows 8.1 64-bit so these issues may not apply to you.

I cannot get this game to run functionally. I perused the discussion board and tried all the tips I could find. Alas, I could only get the computer to believe it's running but I never saw any windows or anything indicating that it was running that I could actually interact with. I deleted the .dll but, honestly, at this point I'm not sure if I want to bother more if getting it to function means deleting a .dll every single time I want to play.

This game may be very good and I bought it on sale so I'm not ♥♥♥♥ed off or anything. But as it stands I cannot recommend the game.

EDIT 07/23/14:

Much later than intended I attempted to solution provided in the comments of this review. It did not work for me.

After the success of the first game, PB immediately started working on the sequel. Released a year after the first game, Gothic II was well received, but the main complaint about it was its easy difficulty. Piranha Bytes took it to heart, and in 2003, the expansion pack called Night of the Raven was released. Aside from new content, the game got a complete rebalance and an incredible difficulty spike, making it the hardest title in the series. Gothic II: Gold Edition only allows you to play the version WITH the addon, so this review will only briefly (if at all) reference the vanilla-only features.

Gothic II picks up where Gothic I left. The Hero banished the final boss, thus bringing an end to the Barrier surrounding the Colony, but the temple crumbled on his head (which actually wasn't shown in the first game, just in the intro for Gothic II). Thankfully (after a couple weeks, but better late than never), Xardas was able to pull him out. During the Hero's nap, all hell broke loose, as dragons appeared and attacked the Valley of Mines along with an army of orcs. Now it's the Hero's job to obtain the magical MacGuffin and slay the vile beasts... oh boy, I can't wait to bash on this in the Story section.

Gothic II uses the same engine as the first game, only improved. The game looks rather pretty, even today (if you overlook the blockyness). Aside from coming back to the Valley of Mines (which got a really cool change and is an even darker and more threatening place, but aside from some removed areas, it retains the exact layout, which shoud really be done more in video game sequels... and it has a snow area and I looooove my snow areas), you'll also explore the actual Khorinis part of the island of Khorinis (lots of grass, forests, and plains) and the undiscovered part of the island added in NotR - Jharkendar, which offers all kinds of tropical climates, swamps, and also a canyon. So the world is triple the size of the first game's, while still having a nostalgic return to the old areas. You'll also explore an actual city in this game, as well as some camps, farms, and a monastery. I think it goes without saying, that the world drew me in even more than before.

Kai Rosekranz' music makes a return and it's grander than before. With more varied areas, the man had to compose fitting music for each and every one of them. And he succeeded. I really don't know what else to say - it's just good.

Sound effects make a return from the first game, but there are some new ones. I can only point out the sounds of the Grassland Scavengers. They sound really cool.

The voice acting is a bit better than in the first game (there's also a lot more of it), but it's still rather terrible and it has some extreme (Malcolm), and I really do mean EXTREME (Bromor) cases. The cheezyness values were upped to eleven, though. And what in the hell have they done to Diego's voice? Anyway, I think the Hero is worthy of note here. Since he's more sarcastic than ever, the voice actor did a good job for reflecting that. But yeah, you'll hear a lot of Xardases in this game, that's for sure.

Now, that's what I'm talking about. They took Gothic 1's gameplay mechanics and improved so much upon them. Now they're actually pretty darn good! The combat, while using the same concept, is now more fluent and doesn't feel nearly as awkward as it did in the first game. I really like it now. Aside from that, more stuff was added, like alchemy, more efficient smithing, rune making, etc. The weapon skills were redone, so now you can achieve a 100% crit chance (and believe you me - EVERYTHING depends on crits in this game). As you skill further, the Learning Point costs increases, which was a feature added specifically for NotR. Now you can't get overpowered that easily. The bow works the same way it did in the first game, though. Not too happy about that.

Now for the magic system. There's a lot less channeling spells, which is good because they took forever to cast in the first game. You'll really be hurting for mana in this game. There are two particular spells that were literally broken. Wave of Death and Fire Rain not only do way more damage than the game claims they do (they can literally oneshot almost everything), but they also hit multiple times (y'know, just in case something survived the first hit). This even comes into play if you don't become a mage because there are spell scrolls and they only cost 5 mana, which is your base amount.

To summarize, the gameplay is better in literally every single way.

Now, I pretty much describes most of the plot in the Overview. Yup, that's about all there is to the plot of the vanilla, save for a couple twists and turns. Now, the addon stuff is a different story. The transition between the two feels a bit off, though, and the excuse for making the addon campaign mandatory was just plain stupid.

The whole dragon thing and you being the Chosen One who has to slay them was really cliché compared to what the first game had to offer. I'm not saying it's terrible - I mean, it works, sure, but it was a bit of a letdown after the first game.

The main cast makes a return with some new more or less important NPCs. They're about the same as in the first game, so I don't have a problem with them.

Definitely better than the first game gameplaywise. A lot better. Storywise, it's really inferior, though. This is one of the cases when better gameplay wins over better story for me, so I actually prefer Gothic II over the original. It's my favorite game in the series. Not surprising, though, when I only like two games in it anyway. But that's a story (a very angry story) for another day. I love this game, it aged well, in my opinion, so play it. I definitely recommend it. But play the first game first because they're directly connected.

+Again, excellent setting and atmosphere
+Great soundtrack
+Still looks rather pretty
+Good length
+Much bigger world
+Rich lore
+Retains the old places from the first game, while adding a more awesome feeling to them
+MUCH better gameplay and combat
+No more invincible enemies
+Very good and (almost) balanced difficulty
+More stable than the first game
+The "from zero to hero" feeling comes back...

-...but is excused by a form of amnesia, so it loses some points here
-The plot is very inferior to the first game's plot
-Bad voice acting
-Still a bit buggy and sometimes crashes
-Doesn't support the Steam Overlay (same problem as in the first game)
-Boss fights are clearly not PB's thing
-A lot of settings are in the .ini file instead of the game itself
-The draw distance could be better (especially since it was better in the first game)
-Doesn't keep voice actors from the first game
-Bad AI
-Ranged combat is still the same

And shout-outs to Cauchemar for making an amazing Let's Play of this game!

I haven't even been to the menu. The game apparently froze in the background and I couldn't even shut it down in the process list. Being the lazy person that I am, I never turn off my computer .

But I was forced by an update to restart, which is why it stopped at 52.

But yeah, Not even been to the menu of the game.
But trying to shut it down in the process list was a funny adventure.
