Map of the Week (May 19, 2016)

Hey guys! As hype of launch slows down, so does the Map of the Week's - but I'm still checkin' out your guys' and gals' custom maps!

This week's creator is no stranger to the Map of the Week - flatgub does it again with another reimagining of DEADBOLT's original campaign map. This week's Map of the Week is Critical Altitude.

Similar to flatgub's last map, this one takes the existing DEADBOLT Map (this time, "New High" and turns the difficulty up to a billion. The objective is the same - destroy the ash caches - but new vampires and zombies will make that alot more difficult than the original map. Thankfully, some new vents have been added as well!

Recommendation: you'll generally upset the ENTIRE map once you get a portion into the stage, so keep track of your ammo count, shoot out all the lights, and remember to save bullets by meleeing. Silent options are good to get as far into the stage as you can!

Also, with what seems to be a custom map tradition: there's backup.

To get the map, just hit the Subscribe button on the map page and restart Steam - it will automatically be downloaded and playable in the "Load Custom Maps" portion of the main menu.

Map of the Week (April 16, 2016)

This week's Map of the Week is sorter's "The Shadow of Death."

This map is a bit special to me because it is one of the few that use the trap system, which I spent like an entire week coding and building for essentially only one stage of use in the final game. It's nice to see it used, and it's a special love/hate relationship when I get tricked by my own game. Congrats!

It's also fun to play a trap stage that I haven't created myself - since I made Temur the Tinkerer, I knew all the tricks. It's fun for me personally to have that 1 second of "oh fuck" before the trap explodes in my face.

I also have to admit that, after the slew of backup-style stages that I've played, it was kinda nice that after a very difficult stage I didn't have to play a very difficult backup round. I guess I'm a casual.

Warning: don't step on the mine when you exit the level. Also, it's generally polite to let the undead go through the doors first. Learn from my experience.

To get the map, just hit the Subscribe button on the map page and restart Steam - it will automatically be downloaded and playable in the "Load Custom Maps" portion of the main menu.

The music, art style, and vibe of the game all work together perfectly, as it was in RoR. The music creator even uploaded the entire soundtrack on his channel and compiled it into a playlist. Plus the game comes with a level editor which works with the Steam workshop.

The only real issue with the game is the currency system were you can beat the game and not be able to get more souls, so you cannot unlock all of the weapons due to not getting more of this currency.

this is game is a like a break in, murder everyone as fast a possible, puzzle game, think of it as a less hyper-violent, less colorful, more gritty, version of hotline miami, just without a top-down view, and very very fun

I expected something similar to Risk of Rain (which I love) but this is WAY different. The graphic style and music is signature to Hopoo but, like RoR, Deadbolt delivers another unique experience. I hope these guys keep doing what they're doing because both of their releases have been hits with me.

10/10 Will miss a bouncer with both shots from a shotgun again

For lovers of stealth action games like Hotline Miami, Gunpoint or Hitman series this game is just outstanding.
Its' demands for proper planning combined with fast-paced action and total unforgiveness are something that will wake up your inner perfectionist.
Not saying protagonists' and enemies' strengths & weakenesses are very well balanced, making gameplay fair and fun.

Btw, excellent music is a rare gem on top of everything else.

Deadbolt is a game that both shows Hopoo\'s strengths and weaknesses as a developer.
Strengths:
-Amazing Soundtrack: Every track hits on a similar tone while still being fresh and dark enough to fit Deadbolt\'s world.
-Gunplay: The gunplay is viceral and hits very hard. Each weapon is both balanced and strong enough to fit a variety of situations. The way enemies heads\' explode with a succesful headshot truly makes you feel like the Repear alongside the innacurate firing of the enmies that encourages trading fire when in a gunfight.
-World: The world of Deadbolt is both dark and relaxing with a very clean and still detailed pixelated art style.
-Its just awesome.

Weaknesses:
-Depth: Beyond unlocking all the weapons and beating the game once through on normal (and again on hard) there isnt much to the world of Deadbolt. It makes you wish for an in depth \"perks?\" system that would allow us more Repear powers or the like. The same problem persisted with Risk of Rain with few fun relics and repetative gameplay even with different characters after the first few clears.
-Story: The set up for the story is there and if you make an effort to collect all the tapes you can get a sense for a loose story within this universe. However with such a short main story arch there isnt much depth that can be acheived. I want to dive deeper into who the Repears are and why they do what they do. I came out with a multitude of questions and even after extensive collection I was still disappointed.
-Replayability: It would be great if the level editor was more expansive or if the game had a new weekly challange or stage or... something! But once you finish your first playthrough \"Hard\" mode is still much too similar.

Verdict:
-Buy this game, its 10 dollars and if it goes on sale then it really deserves a purchase.
-Seeing this as Hopoo\'s second major game I would give this an 8.5/10, its everything I expected and not much more. Not that thats a bad thing, because I did expect a killer soundtrack, fun gameplay, and unique art style.
-I hope that Hopoo continues to produce great games and eventually makes a game that really has an expansive, replayable universe! I will always support their projects because they keep providing the best.

I bought this game because I kept seeing reviews and internet randoms talking about how Hotline Miami this game is. If you loved the fast-paced madness of running room from room, swinging and shooting like a madman, this game is 'not' for you unless you're an expert speedrunner. As someone who's completed Hotline Miami 1 100% on 3 systems and still plays it pretty often for fun, the gameplay is not similar. The only thing that is similar is the 'lone hitman taking on apartments of thugs' concept.

Deadbolt is far more like a puzzle than a crazy, think-on-your-feet style game like HM. Ammo is extremely scarce, and you need to score very accurate headshots to instant-kill. Melee weapons take many hits to kill enemies, and if you're in a room with even 2 enemies or a large dude (Bouncer), then you're just kinda screwed. Same thing if you used up all your ammo being a bad shot, or being careless. Screwed. Wanna rush them down with melee attacks from behind for quick kills? Screwed. Deliver some nasty punches of fury for kills? Screwed unless your enemy is alone and not facing you.

Is this bad? Not at all. Just something to consider if you've been seeing the "This game is like Hotline Miami!" reviews. Because in all honesty, it's not very much like HM.

I didn't have that great of a time getting into this game due to the fact that my expectations were placed elsewhere. That being said, I can't give it a negative review just because of that. It's a solid game and even though it's personally not my type of thing, I can respect it as a good, well-designed game. The developer did a fantastic job with the concept and I hope this is a sign of more to come in the future.

DEADBOLT is an amazing blend of stealth, mystery, and flat-out murder. You play as the Grim Reaper on his quest to slay hordes of undead in various gangs using a wide variety of weapons ranging from humble pistols to semi-automatic grenade launchers. Each level is unique and very challenging (sometimes a bit too challenging). The vent transport mechanic requires timing and is also super fun to use. The music adds a great atmosphere to the game, making it seem even more dark. DEADBOLT is obviously influenced by Gunpoint, but it's not a rip-off at all. There is an air of mystery throughout the whole game because you are only told to kill zombies, but the reasoning is never fully explained. All in all, Hopoo Games has made a terrific noir style game that is simultaneously mind-bendingly tricky and possibly more addictive than crack. Did I mention you get to kill zombies on the toilet? Big plus.

Reaper + Hotline Miami + Scythe + Zombies + Other things + Active dev (Who is really helpful with a few certain achievements) = great game. Play it if you like Hotline Miami, or like a game where you don't have to be skillful, or if you like a game where you can be skillful! Apart from one certain thing makes it 8.5/10 instead of 11/10. You can't do anything with the cat. :(

This game is an overlooked gem.

I just finished the mainstory and I can not comprehend how I haven't heard of this earlier.

What is this game all about?

You're the grim reaper. Working for an unknown employer you set out on a quest to find out why the dead are coming back to life and what their plan is. You're placed into a bizarre and vague Hotline-Miami-esque storyline with a similar soundtrack (really good original OST here!) and start murdering while the mistery slowly unfolds.

I won't spoil any of the fun for you but let me just tell you this: there are a lot of different enemies, maps, bosses and even a few special missions to just give you a feeling what what the devs were trying to tell you.

You can just go on walzing your way through the game or go full-on stealth mode. I liked both.

What I liked:
  • Choose your own playstyle
  • The aiming is very accurate
  • You can lure enemies into ambushes
  • There is a huge of amount of variety (weapons, enemies, levels, etc.)
  • A map editor and Steam Workshop are integrated
  • The story and especially the ending really kept me on my toes
  • The physics of flying limbs is REALLY satisfying
  • Very cool OST
  • Lovely artstyle that really underlines the excellent atmosphere (opening the trunk of your car gave me goosebumps)
  • It's hard as ♥♥♥♥

What I didn't like:
  • The ceilings occasionally felt too high
  • That's literally all, just the ceilings

Here's my conclusion:

A lot of love has flown into this game, it can be seen within every facet. From the sprites to the excellent soundtrack (available on Bandcamp by the way), this game is a masterpiece and has earned a spot within the ranks of my favorite games of all times. This truly is the golden era of indie games.

If you like Hotline Miami, Gunpoint or Ronin, you will not be disappointed!
I recommend getting this at full price, it's really worth it.
