Personal Rating: "Worth playing"
Traditional Rating: 8/10
Genre: Platform Puzzler

Well executed platform puzzler that starts out deceptively easy and gets harder, very much harder, the further you progress. Don't be put off by the childlike cartoony and colorful graphics or the fact that it involves a young chick - named Toki Tori - and his search and rescue mission for his younger brothers and sisters who are still in their eggs.

Yes - it sounds like something you would give a young child to play and whilst they will certainly get much delight out of the game during its earlier levels the game will certainly require some flexing of the old grey matter if you plan on getting through the levels on the harder difficulties. Much trial and error will be required to master some of these devilishly cunning levels.

Originally released as a game for the Gameboy color back in the early 2000's, Toki Tori benefits wonderfully from an HD upgrade for modern computers. Brilliant level design combined with charming visuals makes this a must-have for puzzle enthusiasts and is the perfect family game to play with the young ones in tow.

On the one side Toki Tori is a little cute bird - something between a chick and a penguin. It cannot fly or even jump - just step up a small block and float slowly to ground. You walk through lovely animated enviroments and listen to a sweet soundtrack with the purpose of collecting all placed eggs in every level. But don't get tricked by this overwhelming cuteness!

On the other side Toki Tori is an ultra hard puzzle platformer without any mercy. That's for some reason:
1. Some levels have traps where you get stucked in a hole without coming out. Mostly there is the last egg to get.
2. The monsters are quick and touching is highly deadly. Unfortunatelly you have to come them sometimes really near.
3. You have a cruel limit of using special abilities like bridge building, block throwing or teleporting. If your contingent is gone you cannot do anything more and must try again.
4. It seems that for every level exists only one solution. It's hard to get this, make the right decisions from the beginning to the end and follow the right path.

Though there is a rewind function in this game - besides it looks like VHS. But it will help more in dangerous situations than leading you to the solution. In the end you'll feel lucky to get through all these nerve-wracking levels. But I'm just expecting Toki Tori 2.

When you first see this game, you might get the impression it's more of a child's game, but believe me, it's not!
Surprisingly mature and clever gameplay.
Toki Tori is an absolutely brilliant puzzler with great graphics and even greater puzzles to solve.

Toki Tori is a puzzle game by Two Tribes, released in January 2010. You play the game as a chick by the name of Toki Tori, who is on a quest to collect all the eggs in the world. The game is divided into five worlds, who are also divided into several levels. To proceed into the next level, the player has to collect all the eggs in one level. By proceeding through the game, the player unlocks different tools, which he needs in order to reach certain eggs, but every level has a limited amount of tool uses and this is where the tricky part comes in.

If you are familiar with puzzle games, the game will probably not be very challenging and if you aren't, it's still very easy in the beginning, but gets very hard in the end. The levels are monotone and once you get the hang of one level, you can project that procedure to other levels.

The game gets quite hard in the end and the monotony that I was talking about is compensated by the different worlds in the game, which all have very different themes and different tools. The atmosphere is happy and joyful in the first world, but soon turns darker and more dangerous as more enemies and traps appear. The game features adorable colorful comic graphics and a cheering and catchy music.

Toki Tori is overall a lovely game if you want to pass the time or if you just want a casual game that cheers you up. It's great for people who don't want a serious game and it's a must-have for every puzzle game lover.

Presentation
This little bird first saw the light of day back in 2001 on the good old Game Boy Color, but it manages to remain entertaining and relevant to this date thanks to HD versions, remakes and the fact that you can get it on almost any possible platform including the PC. So, what makes it fun to play 13 years later? Maybe it's the fact that it looks cute and childish and somehow reminds us of a time when games were made for fun and this is certainly an easy to learn, hard to master kind of game because it looks simple at first, but you'll often find yourself looking for the answer somewhere else as you'll get stuck more often than you'd think. The story is simple and just like in Angry Birds you are supposed to rescue your lost brothers, which come in the form of eggs, and not actual birds, but you'll have to go through quite a lot to achieve that. The menu is simple and intuitive and choosing what level you want to play once you unlocked the hard and bonus levels is easy to do, so you won't find yourself navigating the menus in order to find something because all you need is always one click away.
Rating: 8

Gameplay
The gameplay in Toki Tori is as simple as it gets as you can move left/right/up/down using the mouse to point the next place you want your little bird to go and use items in order to pass a certain obstacle or defeat your enemies such as worms, ghosts or porcupines; such items include a freeze gun, a vacuum, instant rocks or the ability to teleport or create bridges. The PC version also has a option to rewind, so in case you screw up you can always go back a couple of seconds and try again which will reduce your frustration because sometimes you might press the wrong button and use an item instead of another or make a wrong step near the end and playing the whole level again would drive you mad. The only thing missing was the ability to jump as I always tried to jump thinking that it would make the whole puzzle easier to solve, only to remember that I can't do that, but either way it's not so bad because you don't really need to as the items and abilities are more than enough.

Graphics
This game looks good as it has a nice pallet of colours and it has that childish look that will make you nostalgic as it is one of those games that will age very well in the purest Nintendo style. Each stage has its own theme so when you will find yourself in the sewers the level design will make it feel like unique and different from the previous stages and the little details like the mud interacting with Toki's feet are going to display the level of attention this game got from the developers and it really shows that they wanted to deliver a better experience with this release and not make it look like just another HD remake.
Rating: 9

Audio
Toki Tori sounds just as good as it looks as the sound manages to deliver the same thing: a childish experience that will stay with you for a long time, and while it repeats the same music over and over again in the menu it never feels overused and during the actual levels the sound manages to deliver the same experience the design does and this helps the player's immersion. The sound effects are also okay, nothing will take you out of this magical world where a chick fights ghosts and worms.
Rating: 9

Extras
The PC version comes with some exclusive levels and the ability to rewind, but the real win comes with the level editor which allows you to create your own unique adventures and challenges for the little bird and thanks to Steam you are able to share them with your friends. The Steam Achievements are also a nice incentive to make you play again certain levels and thanks to all that I managed to spend more time in Toki Tori than in some big triple A games out there.
Rating: 10

Verdict
Toki Tori is a cheap and fun game and no matter if you're getting at full price or grabbing your copy during the next sale, Toki Tori is need to buy because it will take you by surprise regarding how much you will enjoy it no matter if you like that type of games or not and even if you go in to play just a level you will end up spending hours in it and for such a small price it's clearly a bargain.
Rating Overall: 9
