What the developers have to say:

Why Early Access?

“Shift Happens is our first full-scale PC game. The funding is secured, the game is almost feature complete and we are adding content as you are reading this. As a newcomer to the game-biz, we are in need of feedback and sanity checks for the product: Is it fun? How can we make it even more enjoyable?

We decided not to go through a publisher, as this project is our baby and we wanted to keep making our own decisions. Although the game is not an open-world sandbox game, we think Early Access is a good fit to help us make a better game than with just us making decisions. We are a small studio and listening to player-feedback directly instead of market analysis by an anonymous publisher makes much more sense to us.”

Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access?

“We are aiming to launch the game in early 2016, depending on the feedback and resulting changes this could be extended by a few months. So hopefully Early Access will not take more than six months.”

How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version?

“The Early Access version will have increasing content from patch to patch. The content will be added as we develop the game, with EA players being able to play some of the “forgotten” and “rejected” levels during development. Those levels may make it into the final version, but Early Access players in any case will get access during development.
The final version will include one additional stage consisting of the final story levels, which won’t be part of Early Access so you guys have a little surprise at the end. Also the final release will be performance optimized and hopefully bug-free.”

What is the current state of the Early Access version?

“At this point (July 2015), the Early Access includes the first complete “stage” and some extra levels of different stages. The online multiplayer mode is also included in an early version, as this is one of the most test-intensive feature we are working on. At the current time, online multiplayer is not stable and you should expect asynchronicity from time to time.
The game will be available for Windows at first, other platforms to follow.”

Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access?

“Early Access is priced below our full-price, to reward you for your trust, investment and feedback.”

How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process?

“We are very much relying on the feedback of experienced players, as this is our first full-blown PC title. Although the core game mechanics are complete, we still need input when it comes to details and the feel of the game. We have been working on the game for almost two years and are looking forward to having a few pairs of external extra eyes reviewing Shift Happens.
The steam forums will be our main feedback focal point, but we will be live-streaming some development and are looking forward to feedback on these channels as well.”

Finally. Hats! Pre-Gamescom Update.

Hello everybody!

Gamescom 2016 is almost here and we got a small nifty update for you:
You can now unlock hat's for Bismo and Plom.

Right now you can simply unlock them in the Profiles tab under Settings in the Main Menu.
Here's is how it works:
  1. In the main menu, go to "settings" and select the "profile" tab.
  2. In the profile tab there are two text fields for each character "Bismo" and "Plom".
  3. Put in a code in one (or both) of the text fields and hit "Enter" or just click out of the field to activate the code.
  4. A green checkmark indicates if your code was accepted. A red "!" tells you that it was wrong.
  5. If everything was accepted you can now start the game and your characters will wear the hats! If you don't want them to wear their hats anymore, just go to the profile tab again and hit the "clear" button.
Note: Right now you can unlock only one of the following codes:
  • Viking,
  • Crown,
  • Sombrero and
  • Shark

We will slowly be adding more and more hats to the game. Not all hats will always be wearable by both characters!
Got a funny idea for a hat? Let us know, we might consider integrating it!

If you happen to be at Gamescom, stop by our booth at the Indie Arena Booth in Hall 10.1. You can grab some special hat codes there!

We hope you like the hats.
Have fun,

Your Team of Klonk!

July 18

Shift will hit the fan...delayed.

Hi everyone!
First off: Sorry for the long silence concerning updates here. Unfortunately we have to delay the release of Shift Happens which means the game won't make it in july. We can't tell you an exact date yet.
As said a few times already, we are a small independent studio which means in order to stay alive we also have to do contract work. This also means that sometimes things don't go for us as planned because contract works means working together with people that also have schedules.
I hope you bear with us. We are doing everything we can to release Shift Happensasap!

Some small comfort: We are attending this years Gamescom and you can visit us at the Indie Arena Booth in Hall 10.1!

Although the game will not be released in July but later, the full release will still feature the current game including:
  • the 4th and last stage of the game, The Grotto! (10+1 Bonuslevel in multiplayer and 7+1 bonuslevel in singleplayer)
  • The story cutscenes, explaining Bismo and Plom's connection
  • many more improvements.

In the meantime, you can checkout our neat little teaser trailer on youtube:

Teaser Trailer for Shift Happens

I said it already in the last post but:
At this point we also want to express our gratitude to all who contributed to the development of Shift Happens in any way. Thank you very much! You help us keep it going every day.
We also reached 55 reviews by now and got the "Very Positive" tag. That made us very proud and although it doesn't look like much, it really keeps us going.

Also, if you want to be more up to date, make sure to check our social media pages for a bit more information. Twitter is the up-to-datest of them all:

About This Game

The two jello jelly creatures Bismo and Plom got connected in a tragic yet funny accident and thus can exchange their size and abilities at will. Welcome to the world of Shift Happens - the only game out there which doesn't take a closer look at the body mass index and where players are actually forced to work togehter (and occasionally stab each other in the back).

Experience thrilling adventures in four totally different worlds:
  • Explore a freaked out laboratory where Bismo and Plom had their accident!
  • Uncover the secrets of the overgrown green forests...
  • ... and survive the dry canyons where a deadly wind awaits you...
  • ... just to prepare you for the bitingly cold caves!

The twist: Shift Happens is pure fun for solo players, yet it full potential can only be experienced together. Play it with your best friend while hanging around on a couch enjoying a pizza. Together you can solve puzzles and fight over precious coins. Coordination and communication are key to a successful journey. We recommend using gamepads for maximum enjoyability™.

The game also features singleplayer mode with different level content. Although the game is primarily meant to be played by two people, you can play the completely different singleplayer levels without another person.

The game features all the good things you should expect from a co-op platformer:
  • Over 40 levels of handcrafted fun
  • Local and online co-op gameplay
  • Extra challenges/rewards in the levels for completionists and explorers
  • More than 30 different levels designed for the singleplayer mode
  • 8 unlockable bonuslevels (4 single- & 4 multiplayer)
  • Achievements
  • And timechallenges for each level

Quirky, innovative co-op game that offers hours of fun with brain teasing puzzles & well constructed levels. It just goes to show that whether you're large & fat or small & skinny you can still work in unison to overcome every obstacle you're faced with... uh...unless you're married.
Pro tip: Do not play this game in co-op with your spouse because you'll always be fighting as to who's better at puzzle solving. jk!

*Although I played the beta version of this game offered for review, I definitely recommend this game to everyone!

Just played through the first set of single-player levels and really enjoyed it. The progression with new ways to use the characters and objects was great. With the amount of different ways to use them I can see levels being very tough in the future. I also enjoy the fact that, like any good platformer, you can get through the level just as is or try to get all the extra stuff as well. Makes it a bit more intresting to have secondary objectives. Cant wait to try the multiplayer when someone gets home. This game has a ton of potential with speedruns and a level editor. Exctited to follow through the EA development process.

Shift Happens is a cooperative puzzle platformer where you play as one of two creatures that end up sharing the same mass. Since they share the same mass, when one creature is large the other has to be small and vice versa. The two creatures can change shape at any time. Many of the puzzles in the game are designed around this premise. This mechanic is interesting and the developers have created some puzzles that do a good job utilizing it.

While the single player levels are better than I expected, the multiplayer is the best part of the game. I played the multiplayer local co-op so I can't comment on how well the online co-op works. I thought the game did a good job of keeping both players active in the puzzle solving making it that no one player can take control over everything.

At this early stage of early access there are a couple issues that will be hopefully resolved through further development. In around 2 hours I completed all but the most recently added levels. I also found the puzzles to be kind of easy. I play a lot of puzzle platformers though so that could be a contributing factor. As the developers add more levels I think both issues could be resolved.

Note: I received a free review copy of Shift Happens. Other than receiving a free review copy I received no other compensation for this review and it had no impact of the content of this review.

Thoroughly enjoyed playing this in local co-op mode with a friend. It's in early-access currently and some areas like the menu's do show this.

Fantastic that the developer has made the decision to make this online co-op, some of the puzzle solving will probably require some form of communication between players to be most efficient, e.g messaging at the minimum, VOIP as a preference. Obviously for couch play you can shout at your mate when he doesn't do the right thing at the right time!!

The game itself and the mechanics involved really are great fun and it's teamwork all the way! The game involves you and your partner switching between characters (a large one and a small one) to progress the level via obstacle style puzzles. After the first couple of levels changing forms can result in the death of your team-mate which can lead to some hilarity, if you swtich forms whilst your large team-mate is standing in deep water making him take the small form and thus being submerged and drowning!!

The optional challenges also involve completing the level in set times and the Gold times are set at a level where both players are going to have to operate as a very smoothly oiled machine. Any mistakes and you probably won't make it, but really satisfying when you do!! Also there are stars to collect with one bunch of them hidden somewhere secret in each level.

Highly recommend this if you are looking for a puzzle-platformer with co-op mode.

This is the best game I've ever played co-op. From the first stage to the 4th i believe took my friend and i about an hour because i couldnt breathe i was laughing so hard. trolling, teamwork, coordination, sabotage. This game is the best. I now have bought it for 4 friends and will continue to support this designer. Thanks Klonk.

I followed the development of this game for more than one year and I am happy to announce that this exceeded my expectations. I like to play a lot of indie games, but this one is one of a kind.
As you play along, you are forced to talk to the other co-op player to have the right timing to solve the problems ahead. The game mechanic is well structured and well developed. The sound is also pretty good and I can't tell you a single negative point so far.

This could easily be the next big thing in terms of jump & run games.
Shift happens doesn't feel at all like any other early access games: It runs smoothly, bugfree and without any problems.
The game offers just the right level of difficulty, so you never get stuck or bored. We had a blast solving the first few levels and I can't wait to play the rest.

Best coop jump & run game EVER! 10/10

Worth to play if you have reallife frirends to play the co-op campaign, local or via internet. If you don't, you might try the singleplayer where the levels are quite different to the multiplayer. However, one worth a try if you're looking for a good & funny multiplayer sidescroller like mario. - Note: It's Early Access but playable, even if it's sometimes out of sync on internet multiplayer.

Really fun co-op experience, especially liked throwing my friend face first into walls.

Would definitely recommend to anyone looking for something quick and easy to pick up. Only con I have is the grab mechanic is a little clunky and hard to time, but that's minor.
