Ruyn HD is a remake of my minimalist boomer shooter Ruyn, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. It keeps the fast, combo-driven gameplay of the original, but now features modern visuals, smoother controls, updated audio, and tighter gunplay. Ruyn Classic and the 2D and 3D level editors are included.

About This Game

What is it?

Ruyn HD is a remake of my minimalist boomer shooter Ruyn, rebuilt in Unreal Engine 5. It keeps the fast, combo-driven gameplay of the original, but now features more modern visuals, smoother controls, updated audio, and tighter gameplay.

The levels are short, intense, and built for momentum—just you, some weapons, and a ton of enemies to blast through. The focus is on pure, simple shooter mechanics: fast movement and nonstop action.

The original Ruyn Classic is included, and the level editors work across both versions, so you can build once and play in either style.

Ruyn HD is 100% free — no ads, no microtransactions, no DRM.

The original Ruyn Classic, the 2D/3D level editors, and the launcher are all open source and public domain. The HD version's Unreal Engine code is not open source due to engine licensing restrictions, but everything else is yours to modify, share, or build on.

How do I play it?

The basic goal is simple: eliminate all enemies and reach the exit.
If you're chasing a high score, it’s all about speed, variety, and combo flow.

Each time you kill an enemy, a combo bar appears at the top of the screen—it drains quickly. Kill another enemy or collect a gem before it runs out to keep your multiplier alive. The longer you maintain it, the higher your score climbs.

But there’s more: the game rewards creative kills. Use different weapons or methods to earn style bonuses. Repeating the same kill type will reduce the bonus—so keep it fresh if you want to score big.

There’s also a bonus for finishing the level quickly, so don’t hang around too long.

Note: Ammo is shared over multiple weapons. When you collect some shells, you have access to the shotgun and double barrel shotgun straight away. This works the same for the plasma which is shared across the plasma rifle and trident.

Tip: Use the single-barrel shotgun when you need something that fires fast and the double-barrel shotgun when you need more grunt. This can help when you're trying to keep up a combo.

How do I make and share my own levels?

You can find detailed tutorials on how to build your levels here on github gists(See Online Manual URL on this page) and in the community hub.
