Cant recommend this game unless you are running window xp. It crashes all the time. After battles you cant move you are frozen and have to switch to another person. That is fine up in till you have to go solo and cant move after you kill everyone. Wish i read the reviews before buying.

It was a fun and great game from my childhood that i wanted to play again. If you have a xbox i would say pick up a copy from online somewhere. It is worth playing time and time again. If they ever get around to fixing it like they did for the second one i would be happy.

Okay have an update. IF YOU SAVE AFTER EVERY BATTLE YOU CAN LOAD THE GAME AND MOVE AGAIN. So save and load alot. Not sure how far doing this will get me as others have said once you get to the second planet it keeps crashing

I'm sorry, but how in any way is this one better than the second one? Also why are all the secondary character AI's absolute ♥♥♥♥!!!???!!? I mean one moment they are behind me the next they are staring in a corner while I get ♥♥♥♥ed. Also why do the jedi on your side never seem to use the force (Bastila)? HK-47 is not as bad ♥♥♥ as he wants to be, so why is he there? I don't know, this game has a bunch of tiny kinks that eventually drive you mad after several hour of playing where you have unintentionally saved to recent to get out of the loop you are in and the other saves are way toofar back to even touch. As well as WHY DO I KEEP "MISSING"? I can't stand how many times you sit there and for your character, which is the most powerful jedi in the game keeps missing and its not like all of the opponets are ♥♥♥♥♥♥ you (yes they are). I absolutly hate that I have no control over weather the character hits someone but for ♥♥♥♥sake do I have to miss everytime? To the point of replaying the same thing over and over and over while opponets just wale on you. The game makes you feel absolutly defensless and well... ♥♥♥♥♥. Also ♥♥♥♥ you DIZ KNEE

For a game older than half of Steam's users, it holds up surprisingly well. The controls can be a bit weird (fighting mechanics are awful), but plot and character wise, it's really nice. Price isn't too bad for a game with lots of replay value either.

I bought this game on sale for $3.99 but I would happily buy it again for the cheap price of $10.

This game is one of those older games that holds up well for the most part, despite its age. If you have ever played and enjoyed Mass Effect, then you'll probably enjoy this as well. The story is excellent, the characters are interesting, and using the force and lightsabers is still really ****ing cool, even if it looks a little ugly by today's standards.

-Player choice matters (you can be light side or dark side)
-engaging story, characters, and universe
-variety of character builds and ways to play
-several different locations
-aliens speak other languages (though you clearly see they repeat audio clips after a few conversations).
-many mods can be downloaded at
-Star Wars <3

-a bit clunky (but a lot of that can be excused because of its age)
-occasional unfair difficulty spikes
-You will most likely have to fix certain settings once you download it because the Steam version has some issues.

The Good: Excellently crafted story, likeable characters, dialog choices are fun, engaging combat, deep customization and leveling, captures the Star Wars feel perfectly

The Bad: Weird combat problems, ugly and dated visuals, stiff animations and some iffy voice acting, some dialog trees are just broken or off, every planet is laid out to similarly

BioWare is a company that revolutionized the action RPG genre for the western era. In a time where Japanese RPGs dominated the market, BioWare was sitting in a little studio churning out one of the best RPGs of all time. I remember when I was younger how much of a big hoopla this game was. For someone who didn't own an Xbox or a PC that could run the game it still slipped under my radar. I eventually got a chance to rent the game years later on 360 and quickly got bored due to its age. I finally picked it up again on the PC and I am glad I did. The game may feel very dated and old (an entire decade), but there's no denying the excellent story and well crafted atmosphere that truly feels genuine in the Star Wars universe.

You play a custom character that has to defeat the evil Sith Lord Darth Malak. He has found some sort of Star Forge to use against the Republic, so you are shadowing his footsteps to find the Star Maps to this Star Forge. This takes you across several planets such as Tatooine, Dantooine, Kashyyyk, Korriban, Yevin, and even Taris. You acquire companions along the way of all types and endure some pretty tough battles and story choices. You have to constantly choose between the light and dark side during choices, and there's plenty of ways to go about the story.

Firstly, you can choose any world in any order. Each one is roughly laid out the same with a large hub area then an area beyond where your main quest and some side quests lie. I got rather annoyed with the constant similar layouts and wished for variety. Each world has the Star Map area blocked off until you fix some global catastrophe on the planet. Some are so serious that your decision will determine if you are allowed back on later. Besides running around and talking to people to get quests and buy stuff, the combat and customization is fathoms deep; fans will be pleased.

You can customize your character with a plethora of items such as implants, shields, different weapons from lightsabers, blasters, vibroblades, belts, armor, robes, headgear, and I haven't even started on leveling up. You should pick your character based on how you're going to fight. I chose to use melee weapons because you eventually go through Jedi training and get your first lightsaber. I have to say that this brought a smile on my face when I inserted my crystals and watched my character whip around those sabers with the classic lightsaber sounds. Nothing can top that.

The game allows you to customize all your items by inserting upgrades that you find or buy. This is mandatory because there really isn't a "most powerful weapon in the game". You just get a powerful weapon and you have to upgrade it or it won't do you much good. Other than this there is the deep leveling system. You can choose an attribute, feat, power, and skill. Feats effect what you use physically in combat and what combat attacks you can use. Powers are force powers and there are plenty of them. All light and dark powers you can possibly think of are here. I had a lot of fun using them in combat and getting an edge over certain enemies. The level cap is at 20, but most people probably won't even hit that by the end. I finished at level 18 and didn't have too hard of a time finishing it. You can even choose how your companions level up because you can control them too! This is great for people who like a variety and can't have every skill available for your character.

Combat is turned based with die rolling behind the scenes. I really would have like real-time combat, but what's here is exciting and fun on its own. There are tons of different enemies to fight on each planet, and some are harder than others. I found the game really hard at first, but after a while you will level up and find the game very balanced. There are some issues in combat that just really annoyed me. There seems to be a targeting problem in small areas. When you click your action you want the characters will get stuck in an endlessly looping animation if there is someone in their way. This can cause you a battle because you have to disengage and restart the attack or move around the obtrusion. This happened quite a lot, but you will learn to just live with it.

While the story is interesting and choosing how dialog will change it is fun, there are some issues here. Instead of your choice being final, some dialog trees will allow you to go back and change your answer or no matter how you persuade or force persuade neither will work and you can't continue the dialog. This is usually in side missions, but I have never seen the persuade option fail so much in a BioWare game. No matter how much I leveled up my persuasion attribute I failed an awful lot. Other than this though, my other issue is that some dialog just drags on way too long. I found myself skipping a lot of it or just reading ahead of the voices. These, again, are just minor issues that can be overlooked.

The graphics in the game look old and terrible these days, but back in the day they looked amazing. I can see why it looked so good then, but you can still feel the Star Wars atmosphere and that's what counts the most. The character models and animations are stiff, blocky, and repeat a lot, but overall it works. Even some of the voice acting is spotty at best, but overall it is pretty good.

KotOR is an amazing Star Wars experience, but the age may turn a lot of people off. My biggest issue of all is that the game doesn't give any clues on where to go ever. You get no hints and are left on your own to just figure out what to do. I had to use a walkthrough through most of the game because I had no idea where to go, or some quests were very cryptic. This is a huge no-no for me and really hurt the score the most. Overall, this is an amazing Star Wars game and any Star Wars fan will love this game.

Amazing game! For those having issues, the fix is pretty simple (at least it was for me):

After installing, go to the game's folder:
right click on the file "swkotor"
go to the properties
go to the compatibility tab
click on "run this program in compatibility more for" and select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"
That's it!

If you're still having issues, you can can diasble the movies, by running swconfig in the same directory.

People. You can call me crazy, stupid, insane, but you're looking at the greatest RPG ever made. Not only for it's time but even to present day this game is completely unique and unmatched by any other RPG aside from Fallout and Mass Effect. 100% of gamers won't regret this purchase. I rented this game in 2003 when I was 5, and play it too this day. Memories might make my post alittle biased, but I strongly stand by what I say. Most hours and most fun i've ever had on any game. 10/10

Kotor is a legend
-Great Story
-Great "Powers" and "Skills" system
-You can choose different paths that changes the story
-Dark side/Light side choices
-Its old, but its still VERY playable
-You can play it over and over again, exploring choices and endings
-Great companions(system) and voice actors
-Its just a game you want to play
-Long story with always new aspects to who you want to be.
- Story
- Story
-i know the three pros over are the same as i have written b4, but !!!!! its awzm
- It is being developed a new "mod", which is a total conversion called Apeiron. It looks amazing.
-Outdated fighting system
-A bit outdated graphics (BUT WHO CARES!)
-Can be a little buggy in loading (stops, or crashes= CAN BE FIXED!)
-Some cutscenes will crash the game(Can be fixed)

This game is recommended for whoever loves a good story and fun gameplay.
I have more than 100 hours on my old Xbox, not just the hours i have on steam. Win 10 may glitch the game up, but you can check the internet if there is any fixes.

Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic Review
Intro. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic or KOTOR for short is a classic video game. It is one of Bioware's first RPG it is a very popular game from 2003. This game is the precursor to Bioware's Mass Effect and Dragon Age games.
1 Star Wars KOTOR is a great roleplaying game with a great story that is comparable to the quality of the starwars movies. It has a very interesting plot with a very imersive world, well written characters, is true to Star Wars lore and is a joy to play through multiple times for the story alone.
2 The gameplay in the game is very fun your decisions in the game have benefits and negative if you decide to follow the dark side or the light side of the force. There are often many different outcomes to a quest, adding more to the replay value. The games combat is similar to dungeons and dragons with attack damage calculated like a dice role, so how much damage you do can depend on luck making the game more challenging. There are also many mini games throughout the story adding variety such as swoop racing, space fights, card games, arena battles and riddles just to name a few. The game does not feel repetitive with all the extra mini games.
3 The mods for this game are wonderfully done there are well over 1000 mods for KOTOR including, KOTOR 1 restoration mod, yavin IV planet mod, Solomon revenge the brotherhood of shadow, and many many more mods. There are many mods that fix parts of the game you may not like mods adding content mods fixing bugs, and mods restoring lost content. Some of the fan mods even have voice acting, 3D textures, dialogue and extra stories that are higher quality than the content in the game. Most KOTOR mods come with a TSL patcher that makes installing and uninstalling them very simple just run the installer to install the mod.
1 A rule is said about KOTOR and that is that it's impossible to run KOTOR without the game crashing on you at least once. The game even crashes in speed runs. The game is really buggy and unfortunately many of the wonderful mods don't help how the game can crash during cutscenes, movies, loading screens and such. The game can be fixed to run well even on modern systems. I have played through the game on windows 10 both the steam and disk version and it had some issues but I was able to beat the game with only a few crashes. The community support to fix any issues you might have is very good but there are many problems in KOTOR due to the game running in a awful engine. Despite you likely having to change game settings a few times and it crashing on you a few times I still recommend the game. If you want a game just like this that is more stable and crashes less try KOTOR the sith lords 2, but I am one of those people who think KOTOR 1 is better.
2 The game is very old and does not look very good. The game looks like a ps2 era game and is quite dated by today's standards. There are many mods that improve the graphics of the game, there are mods the redo most of the textures in the game even texture mods that fix the textures of mod content so if you don't mind installing a few texture mods you can improve the look of the game Its effects animations sounds and much more. The game even with all of the setting cranked all the way up and with all the texture mods the game looks much better but still looks dated but it doest look like its 10 years old if you mod it.
3 KOTOR had some issues with the game being rushed and it having cut content. KOTOR the sith lords had this issue too but that game at least had a new steam update that officially added that mod content into the game, adding controller support, and improving the games performance. Sadly KOTOR 1 does not have these improvements but some day it may get such improvements. The game feels well made in a few areas but empty in other parts of the game. You will want to mod the game to get more content because the old KOTOR series 1&2 had development issues.
Kotor 1 is a classic and a excellent game despite these issues. if you want a more stable game I would recommend you try KOTOR 2 but I personally found KOTOR 1 much more fun as i have beaten the game multiple times while I liked KOTOR 2 but I could never enjoy it enough to play it through. I think KOTOR 1 had better sound was more imersive as a story, was more fun, and it has more mods than KOTOR 2. The best way to describe this is if mass effect or dragon age was a Star Wars game but older. The game was the first bioware game to have the first "romance scene" ;)
To Conclude
Do I recommend you buy this game? Yes I do recommend this to anyone who wants a fun game with a great story, TONS of awesome mod content, a game that immersises you in the starwars universe like no other game I have ever played and is really fun and has great replay value. If you consider mod content to the game it has enough replay value to play the game over 12 times playing each class each difficulty, each mod that is incompatible with other mods and playing different decisions. The game is unstable and will crash on you at least once but I found the steam version to crash less than my disk version of the game. I recommend that you buy the game and see all the wonderful mod content, the great story and get immersed into the world of starwars in a story as good or better than the starwars movies.

Star wars knights of the Old Republic is a master piece and an example of what a game should be. It has memorable characters, fun gameplay, amazing story, great atmosphere, good gameplay mechanics, and doesn't feel stale after 3 replays. Even though textures are very much starting to show their age it still doesn't look bad and even still has some visually stunning areas (I still take a second to admire Mannan). Sadly though, some people are not willing to lookup how to fix the easily fixable issues they are having trying to get the game not to crash and would rather leave a bad review and are thus ruining the score of this near flawless game. I would recommend anyone who is a Star Wars fan to check this game out, anyone who is a RPG fan to check this game out, and just anyone who is able to load up a video game to CHECK THIS GAME OUT. Go in knowing nothing and come out loving everything. 10/10- A truly unforgettable experience

So good! Don't be put off by its age, KOTOR is still incredible to play. An amazing RPG set in a great franchise, and makes it really easy to play over and over again since player choices actually make a difference (well, most of the time anyway).
Highly recommended.
