Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic Review
Intro. Star Wars Knights Of The Old Republic or KOTOR for short is a classic video game. It is one of Bioware's first RPG it is a very popular game from 2003. This game is the precursor to Bioware's Mass Effect and Dragon Age games.
1 Star Wars KOTOR is a great roleplaying game with a great story that is comparable to the quality of the starwars movies. It has a very interesting plot with a very imersive world, well written characters, is true to Star Wars lore and is a joy to play through multiple times for the story alone.
2 The gameplay in the game is very fun your decisions in the game have benefits and negative if you decide to follow the dark side or the light side of the force. There are often many different outcomes to a quest, adding more to the replay value. The games combat is similar to dungeons and dragons with attack damage calculated like a dice role, so how much damage you do can depend on luck making the game more challenging. There are also many mini games throughout the story adding variety such as swoop racing, space fights, card games, arena battles and riddles just to name a few. The game does not feel repetitive with all the extra mini games.
3 The mods for this game are wonderfully done there are well over 1000 mods for KOTOR including, KOTOR 1 restoration mod, yavin IV planet mod, Solomon revenge the brotherhood of shadow, and many many more mods. There are many mods that fix parts of the game you may not like mods adding content mods fixing bugs, and mods restoring lost content. Some of the fan mods even have voice acting, 3D textures, dialogue and extra stories that are higher quality than the content in the game. Most KOTOR mods come with a TSL patcher that makes installing and uninstalling them very simple just run the installer to install the mod.
1 A rule is said about KOTOR and that is that it's impossible to run KOTOR without the game crashing on you at least once. The game even crashes in speed runs. The game is really buggy and unfortunately many of the wonderful mods don't help how the game can crash during cutscenes, movies, loading screens and such. The game can be fixed to run well even on modern systems. I have played through the game on windows 10 both the steam and disk version and it had some issues but I was able to beat the game with only a few crashes. The community support to fix any issues you might have is very good but there are many problems in KOTOR due to the game running in a awful engine. Despite you likely having to change game settings a few times and it crashing on you a few times I still recommend the game. If you want a game just like this that is more stable and crashes less try KOTOR the sith lords 2, but I am one of those people who think KOTOR 1 is better.
2 The game is very old and does not look very good. The game looks like a ps2 era game and is quite dated by today's standards. There are many mods that improve the graphics of the game, there are mods the redo most of the textures in the game even texture mods that fix the textures of mod content so if you don't mind installing a few texture mods you can improve the look of the game Its effects animations sounds and much more. The game even with all of the setting cranked all the way up and with all the texture mods the game looks much better but still looks dated but it doest look like its 10 years old if you mod it.
3 KOTOR had some issues with the game being rushed and it having cut content. KOTOR the sith lords had this issue too but that game at least had a new steam update that officially added that mod content into the game, adding controller support, and improving the games performance. Sadly KOTOR 1 does not have these improvements but some day it may get such improvements. The game feels well made in a few areas but empty in other parts of the game. You will want to mod the game to get more content because the old KOTOR series 1&2 had development issues.
Kotor 1 is a classic and a excellent game despite these issues. if you want a more stable game I would recommend you try KOTOR 2 but I personally found KOTOR 1 much more fun as i have beaten the game multiple times while I liked KOTOR 2 but I could never enjoy it enough to play it through. I think KOTOR 1 had better sound was more imersive as a story, was more fun, and it has more mods than KOTOR 2. The best way to describe this is if mass effect or dragon age was a Star Wars game but older. The game was the first bioware game to have the first "romance scene" ;)
To Conclude
Do I recommend you buy this game? Yes I do recommend this to anyone who wants a fun game with a great story, TONS of awesome mod content, a game that immersises you in the starwars universe like no other game I have ever played and is really fun and has great replay value. If you consider mod content to the game it has enough replay value to play the game over 12 times playing each class each difficulty, each mod that is incompatible with other mods and playing different decisions. The game is unstable and will crash on you at least once but I found the steam version to crash less than my disk version of the game. I recommend that you buy the game and see all the wonderful mod content, the great story and get immersed into the world of starwars in a story as good or better than the starwars movies.

One of the best games ever made.

A rich and fufilling story
Your actions help guide the story along

(That being said, steam did not bother to fix some of the original bugs in the game. They don't ruin the game, but they can be frustrating at times..... SAVE OFTEN)

It's not Star Wars Battlefront (2015). It definitely has my vote.

Amazing game! For those having issues, the fix is pretty simple (at least it was for me):

After installing, go to the game's folder:
right click on the file "swkotor"
go to the properties
go to the compatibility tab
click on "run this program in compatibility more for" and select "Windows XP Service Pack 3"
That's it!

If you're still having issues, you can can diasble the movies, by running swconfig in the same directory.

Cant recommend this game unless you are running window xp. It crashes all the time. After battles you cant move you are frozen and have to switch to another person. That is fine up in till you have to go solo and cant move after you kill everyone. Wish i read the reviews before buying.

It was a fun and great game from my childhood that i wanted to play again. If you have a xbox i would say pick up a copy from online somewhere. It is worth playing time and time again. If they ever get around to fixing it like they did for the second one i would be happy.

Okay have an update. IF YOU SAVE AFTER EVERY BATTLE YOU CAN LOAD THE GAME AND MOVE AGAIN. So save and load alot. Not sure how far doing this will get me as others have said once you get to the second planet it keeps crashing

Was not able to complete the game due to frequent crashes. An amazing game but compatability with both Windows 10 and modern hardware is a nightmare running this game.

This game is great. Everything about it is great.
This port sucks. Everything about it sucks.
It crashes, there are more glitches in this version than the original, the setup is clunky and poorly optomized for PCs.
You'd be better off digging up an original xbox and game disc and playing this on that.

Great game- loved it. Got it on Saturday and I've spent 24hrs on it already (Tuesday on day of writing).
Story is great did not see the twist coming and made me really involved in the story.
The choices you make actually change the story!! Already replaying it to do the light side ending...
13 year old game graphics are a bit vintage a bit like GTA SA (play it if you haven't!!).
I was pretty happy with the gameplay.
But I think you can mod both of those things anyway as well as adding widescreen compatibility (which I did and I have no idea with how to mod things...). Find a youtube vid on it!
Playing on Windows 10 with 2 GB RAM and 1.33 GHz, I know cute little system properties.
Only got crashes untill I added AllowwindowedMode=1 under the [Graphics Options] in the swotor config settings file (it opens up as a .txt file in the steamapps/common/swkotor bit.

I just finished this wonderful title today, and it's hard not to be over excited and exaggerate on my review, but I must say; it's a gem. The Star Wars universe feels alive and welcoming in this game, complemented by solid RPG mechanics and an amazing story. Sure the graphics are outdated, but that shouldn’t discourage you from diving into this game. As a GM and amateur game designer, I’ve learned valuable lessons in character progression, level design and overall plot development.
If you enjoy RPGs and never played this game, do yourself a favor and buy it. I should also say that the combat isn’t very intuitive, rather more tailored towards strategy, but that’s not a bad thing. I found myself often pausing the game to analyze my surroundings and make the best decisions I could.

The game is based on the D&D 3.0 ruleset and it brought me nostalgic tears of joy to have that system powering my journey. One thing I wish was better implemented though, was the Light and Dark balance and point acquisition. I felt like we needed more meaningful choices and moral ambiguities to spice things up, but that might as well be just my personal taste.

I haven’t played the sequel yet, but I plan to. I’m now hoping for a third game, with updated graphics and no compromise on mechanics and storytelling.

This game is a mess, it's a cruddy, half-arsed, money-grabbing port that just fails miserably to even function. At random points I get complete control input lockout, absolutely nothing I click on or press will interact with the game world. That's it, load the last checkpoint.

As much as i love this game i just cannot give it a positive review. This has to be the worse, laziest port to ever come to steam, maybe even worse than Batman Arkhan Knight, the game is pretty much unplayable on newer pcs and it's really ♥♥♥♥ed up on older ones,it crashed (literally crashed the system) my really expensive PC (not to boast) thrice now,i can't even finish the Endar Spire intro. Moreover the game has many really annoying bugs, trying to get through the intro was a real pain, and i couldn't even finish it.

The game is great, this port SUCKS balls.I mean it,go play it somewhere else.

(Running the latest version of windows 8)
