As much as I want to say that I hate this game, I can't. This game is incredibly rage-inducing, but I love it anyways. The art style and music is so cute that it almost relaxes me as I get angry, so it turns into an everlasting cycle of rage and peace. I do honestly recommend this game though. It's a good game and I had fun playing it, so I do recommend it. But I will warn you now, you will get frustrated. And I mean it.

Lovely Planet is a game with surprisingly solid and fun FPS mechanics that make running and gunning a blast. It's aesthetic is bizarre and colorful and backed up by a solid soundtrack that invokes feelings of playing Katamari Damacy. I had a lot of fun with the game, but unfortunately it all fell apart in the fourth world.

Up until that point, the worlds were a nice romp, with each world introducing a new gameplay element and steadily ramping up the difficulty. It got difficult, but it was at least fair. The first world is an introduction to the mechanics where you just get used to the controls, the second world introduced apple targets that needed to be shot before they hit the ground or else you restart, and the third world introduced enemies with homing bullets that you have to shoot or else they would take you out every time.

However, the fourth world, the Marsh, throws fairness out the window. The gameplay elements introduced here are the fog, which I'm not entirely sure was a gameplay decision or just an unfortunately detrimental aesthetic feature, and teleporters. It is at this point that the difficulty jumps up massively and unfairly. Homing bullets begin launching at you from many directions, often without an enemy even shooting them, and apple targets will launch in the distance, only coming within view before you can even react and shoot them down thanks to the fog. Additionally, teleporters exist, and most I've seen dump you out in a new area with barely any time to react to a volley of obstacles and apples to address before you screw up and have to restart. The level design here ramped up the difficulty to an unfair degree, and it often felt like I would have to go into the situation, restart the level a few times to learn where apples and bullets were, and then spray and pray.

It's incredibly unfortunate that the game really just falls apart at this point. It seemed like every new level would have me restarting 50-100 times each just to feel that I got lucky and wasn't riding on my own skill. I'm sorry to say that this unfairness took its toll, and I quit midway through the Marsh world, somewhere around 4-10. I was having so much fun up until that point.

If you enjoy fast paced FPS games, you will enjoy this game up until the 4th world. It's at this point where you also need to enjoy muscle memory challenges much like japanese ROM hacks such as Kaizo Mario, if you are familiar. It feels as if the latter is much more of a requirement than the former, so beware of spending your money, even if the price is a relatively cheap $6.

Played for 10 minutes and got a headache. I like the concept of it, I was just looking for a game where I can jump around shoot things with. This game turned out to be the opposite of that. Bought it for $1.12 through Humble Bundle so I guess I got my money's worth - not saying its a bad game but its a bad game for me.

The world is kind of a heavy place lately, and it's become hard to escape and find that moment of peace we all could really use. Everywhere we look for entertainment or relaxation reminds us of the discord and disorder seen more and more through images of violence and confrontation. Where do you turn when you want to get away from the realities of the world we're being reminded of every day?

Of course everyone enjoys the challenge and hyperactive action of first person shooters but as some of us grow older we tire of their melodramatic, heavy handed, and needlessly intense nature. Could it be possible to have that same action in a more refined, artistic, and abstract style? Lovely Planet is exactly the kind of shooter to bring us this sort of peace so needed in an entertainment industry fueled by glorified aggression.

Like a series of condensed blasts of Unreal Tournament's frantic chaos rolled up into a Katamari Damacy world of simple origami aesthetics and uplifting pop-folk melody, this is definitely a game for the open minded.

Lovely Planet has a very esoteric and eastern feel to it with it's outgoing style and upbeat pop melodies composed by multi-talented musician Calum Bowen, giving me nuances of saturday mornings as a youth watching Japanese children's programming on old VHS my Grandparents would tape and mail. While this is obviously a very personal feeling of nostalgia, there's a different form of it each player will end up discovering in their own way and tied somehow to their own past. If that reminiscent feeling isn't there for the player initially, it will be a new memory engraved into their mind in the same way our favorite things as a child stick with us.

Despite the heavy Japanese overtones from the bits of stylized text and the simplicity of it's cute and attractive design, the game was actually created by Delhi based QUICKTEQUILA and the bridging between cultures by this up-and-coming developer gives the surreal nature of it's atmosphere a touch of authenticity.

Beginning your journey into this Lovely Planet is almost overwhelming, assaulted with bright and stupefyingly cheerful audiovisuals. You're presented to an abstract world of random and seemingly unrelated trinkets and collage of colorful shapes, sitting somewhere between the mysterious indie charm of Proteus and the otherworldly grandiose of Katamari Damacy.

Although the attractive and charming visuals may ease you into a false sense of ease and comfort, the game is no pushover. It features a very progressive learning curve that keeps you on your toes and constantly alert. The stages require finesse as you dance around a well choreographed ballet of bullets.

The first world titled simply 'City' gets you into the motions with some short and mostly linear pathways sprinkled with some adorable visual design through bright colors, odd decorations, and an onslaught of peculiar words and phrases in Japanese strewn about. Beating this first handful of levels is a lightning quick affair where each attempt will be over before you even realize it, leaving you craving the next hit of fast paced shooting and jumping action.

This pace quickly changes as you enter the second world and on as the levels begin to twist and turn into more complex patterns. Different enemies and obstacles appear forcing you to think quicker before every jump or turn of a corner, and new increasingly peculiar tasks become prevalent from protecting your distressed looking blue companions to shooting down cartoonish apples before they plummet to the ground. The obstacle-course like stages just get harder and harder, you'll begin retrying more and more, and you'll slowly become consumed in the competitive spirit of the World Records shown at the end of each stage.

Lovely Planet will cause you to wear out your restart key as you mash it mercilessly to conquer that one seemingly simple stage and in good time. You'll eventually beat these difficult and meticulously planned later levels and instantly get a feeling of satisfaction, which quickly turns into the crush of defeat as you're shown a world record only to realize you are still seconds from being the best.

Lovely Planet is a game with roots in culture, art, and the essence of what 'fun' used to stand for. It proves that art games don't need to all have the same boring or pretentious gameplay, and can be just as engaging and fun as anything else out there.

Let me paint you a picture. I'm sitting in my living room playing “Lovely Planet” for review purposes and junk. It's pretty adorable; that's my first impression. I'm running around a world that could easily be confused with “Katamari Damacy,” shooting little red squares and pins, rushing to reach the pink and purple flagpole that signifies the end of each short burst of a level. With every victory I'm shown my time, accuracy, and the stars I've earned. I finish each level in a few seconds... at first.

As I progress this cute little game takes a sinister turn. Suddenly I have to deal with innocent geometric dudes I can't shoot, platforms that disappear should I linger a moment too long, and giant apples I have to shoot before they hit the ground - all while bouncing and dodging (and screaming curse words so vile and bizarre that they haven't been conjured up, not in this plane of existence, anyway. Only in “Lovely Planet”).

Remember that level in “Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare?” I think it was called “Mile High Club” or something punny. Yeah, this whole damn game is that level. There are no screw ups, no second chances. I've never clutched a controller so tightly, a fact made all the more disturbing because I'm playing a game with a color scheme straight out of the Teletubby-verse.

Those with weak constitutions should avoid this title as the catchy music and rainbow explosion background will literally drive you to slavering madness as it mocks you; taunts you. You'll replay any given level a dozen times, each death increasingly unfair to you. Your shouts of disbelief will slowly transform into maniacal, sobbing laughter as you come to realize you're the devil and sinner in this Kafkaesque Hell of your own making. And finally, with victory nearly in your desperate, grasping reach, your sweat-slicked hands will betray you and you'll fall to your death.

And then you'll click retry. "Lovely Planet" is endearing, unapologetic in its challenge, and fun to play. This game has heart and charm usually absent in your standard 'tough as nails' fare, and it is a refreshing change of pace. For twitch gameplay enthusiasts and fans of the wonderfully weird, I can't recommend "Lovely Planet" enough.

This game combines the speedrunning of Super Meat Boy, the jumpy shooty springy parts of Serious Sam, the difficulty of both, and the aesthetics of Katamari. Don't let the cuteness fool you. This game is tough.

Also, soundtrack is amazing.

AESTHETIC. Thats this game and it nails it. Twich shooter gameplay that's extremely satisfying to master. Fun worlds that are creative and colorful. A music score that just oozes good feeligns and happy times. Difficulty that progresses as your skill does. Simplistic in its looks, Godlike in its gameplay. 5/5
