Smugglers 5: Invasion Now On Steam

In case you have missed it, Smugglers 5: Invasion is available on Steam since 16th October.

The Invasion expansion adds a new alien race with new ships, new skills, new star systems, an improved combat system, improvements to the game graphics including screen resolution and much more. There are significantly more stories to explore in each new system, and full combat carriers with bombers, interceptors, and escort vessels. With hundreds of different skills, many starting professions, and the ability to change the course of the war, Smugglers 5: Invasion is the turn based answer to every star captain's dream.

Smugglers 5: Invasion starts where the original game ended. After years of civil war, the Federation finally emerged victorious, crushing all rebel activity. The galaxy looked forward to a period of peace, a chance to repair the damage of a long and bitter war.

Then came the Jalkath, a new alien race. To the humans, they looked much like the tigers of Old Earth, and they soon proved themselves to be every bit as cunning and dangerous. The newcomers were swift and brutal in their assault, deploying terrifying weapons and subjugating entire systems before their victims even knew what was happening. The Federation has rallied a defense against the invaders, as both sides struggle for dominance.

Now, war has returned to the galaxy. For the right kind of captain, it’s a whole new chance for fame and fortune. Will you fight for the survival of your race? Trade and smuggle goods to make your fortune? Or play both sides against each other for your own profit?

This is a different scenario and does not replace the original Smugglers 5: Secession, which plays in a different timeline.

Oh I was expecting so much from this game, but at the same time, I had so many doubts if it would get boring quickly. After a discussion in the forums where the developer himself almost started a fight because he thought I should just try the game as it is already so cheap (???), my curiousness was bigger than my intelligence and I went on and bought the game.

Yeah, it was fun for about 1 hour... then it started to get repetitive. So it should cost around 0.99$. Yeah, there is SOOOO much you can do in the game, but it's mostly about semantics and limiting standard stuff. If you design a game where you can be a rogue, a warrior or a magician, but then make you select all your skills so that you can make a magician with rogue clothes, it's only semantics. Oh but wait, if we cut off one hand of a magician, then people will think he is different. No he is just less fun that way. That's almost what's happening in this game. Yes, you get a bigger ship if you work hard, and the game just changes all other things so that the gameplay stays the same. Yes, you can be a trader, a trader, a trader and a trader, and also a disabled trader (pirate).

And on a side note: when I went looking if the DLC would improve the game for me, I discovered that the developer has again been fighting on the forum, banning people who do not agree. Not that that should change your opinion on the game, but do you really want to support such a developer?

This is retro rpg-strategy at it's best. Tons of text content. Six classes with their own skill tree with four possible factions (5th secret one). Career options. Combat is turn based.

All-in-all I give it 8/10. I would have liked to have seen more leveling options (once you hit Admiral or faction equivalent that's it). If you've picked your skills correctly though it turns into a game of "i'm bad ♥♥♥ and I want your solar system" style galactic conquest.

This game is Pirates! in space with most of the features that you would hope for in that.
That said, the game is extremely unpolished, combat gets old after a few hours, trading is boring from the very beginning, there is absolutely no replay value to the campaign, you can't mix skill types because you are forced to follow a set career and skill path (one of six), and the game tells you to buy the expansion every time you leave the game.
If you are absolutely certain that this game is something you would enjoy, and can overlook the things that I and others have said are bad, go ahead and buy the game because you might enjoy it.
If you have any doubts about this game at all, wait until it goes on sale or just spend your money on something else.

If you like to buy low and sell high. Then you like to play trading games like I do. I picked this game up after spending a few minutes with the demo. Since I have played close to 12 hours. The majority of that was playing the free trader. What I have found is the trade system is extremely weak. Once you spend a while in your starting system. As a free trader you start off in a fighter craft unable to warp out of said system. Profit comes slowly and the first warp ready corvette cost over 100 thousand credits. During this stage of the game profit per unit is anywhere from single digits to a 100 credits. However after you get a corvette and explore for a little while. You will find that certain systems produce Antimatter, Diamonds, and Super Ore. These systems are where you spend most of your time after wards. Buying those items and running to the closes invaded system. Where you can sell Antimatter for 1000 to 2000 profit per unit 600 or more for diamonds, and 150-200 profit for super ore. This allows for extremely easy progression and quite easily shows what this game lacks.

The main thing the game truly lacks is an assortment of ships. There are 4 classes fighters, corvettes, destroyers, and cruisers. Besides a few faction or class based starting, capital ships there are 2 or 3 options per level. With one per level with a decent cargo hold, as a trader I would have hope for more options. At the highest level ship you will have around a 2000 thousand unit cargo hold.

It isn't to small if all you do is trade. However as you level up you get the option of owning companies. Sadly it is utterly simplistic to my knowledge there is only two branches. Synthetics factories which can be upgraded to produce robotics then engines. This requires super ore and is the only other factory branch that I know of. Super ore factories can be upgraded to produce diamonds and antimatter. This branch of industries require robotics.

I would like to set up a production chain. Where I can produce super ore to ship to my robotic factories, then ship my robotics to an antimatter factory. There is no other way for you to ship your produced goods automatically. You are limited to automatic purchasing those required units in system or galaxy wide. This of course increases the cost of the factory. You can also automatically sell at a loss of 50 percent. You can of course ship the stuff to and from yourself. However this causes the final product antimatter to simply stock up while you resupply the other factories. After you stock them up enough to give you some time you will find you have already produced thousands of antimatter. Or in my case 10 thousand antimatter so as you can see a ship with cargo capacity of around 2k will make a killing with all that antimatter. However I have a stockpile of antimatter growing by the week. Once you tack on travel time to and from contested systems. Which can take months your stockpile has grown, and the robotics and super ore factories are in need of supervision. In the end it is just easier to automate the robotic and antimatter factories and closing the super ore one. They will operate making you a little profit unless the system is under attack. Where as if it had been flushed out and you could ship produced goods to and from systems automatically. And had access to capital sized freighters you could simply set around all day making billions.

So while the trading is fun it is short lived and the trader end game of companies is shallow at best. I would still consider this game worth the price of admission.

Even at the current discounted price of $3.39 I would not recommend buying this game. If it didn't have the bugs, and was half that price I normally would say it would be a good buy. But, go read the forum and see who you would be giving your money to, and make an informed decision.

This game is boring, overly simplistic, and unpolished. It feels like it belongs on a free Flash games website, rather the Steam store. The gameplay and graphics would have fit right in with late-90s iterations of games like Taipan! and Drugwars, or possibly some of the more simplistic mobile games of today, which is understandable when you note that the first Smugglers came came out in about 1998/99 and apparently very little has changed between versions 1-5. Honestly, if this game were $15 years old or free on some Flash site or a $2 iPhone title, I'd say it's great, but it's certainly not worth $10, considering the lack of depth, repetitive gameplay and unpolished nature of the game.

I really wanted to like this, but it's ultimately just flying around between bases and trading. If you could automate it this would've been better. I like the theory but it just doesn't have staying power in my library

Pretty alright, but clearly unfinished, and lacks depth. Worth a dollar. Not worth five.
Also, when I exited to main menu after 3 hours(and finishing pretty much all the available content, the rest was just repeats after that point), there was an ad. For an expansion.
That was pretty upsetting.
Finish the base game before you release an expansion, dickwads.

Just to start, the game is terribly simplistic. The upgrades on the different ships are the same. Each planet offers the exact same options except for difference in tradeable good prices. The combat is also very simplistic, and the RNG factor can be extremely frustrating, as even smaller ships can destory you with the right set of power-ups. Also, all of your missions after the first few tend to involve fighting larger ships. No matter how much you upgrade, the enemy is always bigger (why bother upgrading, then?). The leveling is INCREDIBLY slow. In around 8-10 hours of play, I had leveled maybe a grand total of 5 times. In addition, you can't run away from combat, so if you're on low health and get into combat, too bad.

All around, the game is very lack-luster. Bad graphic. Bad gameplay. Bad storytelling. Bad RNG.

The only good parts were the smaller flavor missions that appear when you visit planets and the variety of choices in the skill trees.

Smugglers V seems like a game which should be listed as "early access" but isn't. This game is missing a fair amount of content including descriptive text on abilities, any of the details on skills and an entire class of ships.

This game is also missing the end-game content so bad luck if you thought you might like to lead your own fleet or do anything cool, the game becomes rather bland after a couple of hours gameplay with all combat being nearly identical with only a slight mixup due to you only being able to use abilities when the RNG decides you can...

To add insult to injury the dev's appear to have decided to release a paid DLC instead of fleshing out the content this game needs so badly and go so far as to ask you to buy it every time you exit the game.

As much as I like this genre of game this was definately not worth the purchase in my mind due to the lack of any warnings besides from other buyers about how this game is still heavily in development even though it already has paid dlc.

Great game with basically endless playability. I would have to compare it to a Freelancer or X series game with a much simpler design.

You can play as a ruthless pirate with your own space station lair to conduct your villianous activities including bribing pirates to carry out different actions like smuggling and blackmail.

Or you can play as a rogue military leader that can influence system conflicts in favor of whatever faction you choose to aid.

There's much more to do than this and ends up being quite addictive. Highly recommended.

It used to be a chance game when you would just want to be able to hit your abilities... NOW you have to hope abilities appear on your skill tab even tho you chose the skill in your talent tree you need to be lucky if you can even see said skill. Unrated ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ is what this is pirating was a fun game of chance in this game now you just gotta be lucky if all the skills you chose are ever available next round or you may as well lose everything as a pirate in this game... Great game for anything except the broken combat system.

I dont understand how this game sucks me in. but it does. it's like a game from the early 90's mnimal grfx but big on story and next-turnitis sets in faster then u can expect.

Bottom line: it's fun. they should make a mobile version.

The battles are boring and not as mutch strategy as I wanted, sitting and pushing true same tactis over and over until finaly by luck you win after 5-15 min

Not well lvl up system, to few faces with no change ability think it would be better to have no face at all

The thought behind the game I liked with smuggler, pirates and traders but need aproving alot

This game is rubbish!!!! The people who made it just want to steal your money and waste your time. I've played alot of half baked fantasy tiles but this one takes the cake. I'm so glad I bought this on a 50% off deal. The repetitive nature of the game gets boring very quickly and even if you grind your way to the top ranks getting things like driods and battleship are a nightmare at the best of times. If you HATE FUN and like getting frustrated and annoyed BUY THIS GAME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not a bad game, especially for an Indie developer. It has the makings of addictive gameplay like Civilization, but lacks the gameplay depth to be interesting for more than about 3 hours; it gets repetitive rather quickly. If this game had more complexity and more things to do, it would be much better.
