Smugglers 5 - Update V. 1.5

Smugglers 5 - Update V. 1.5

Smugglers 5: Secession and Smugglers 5: Invasion have both received an update today to version 1.5.

Smugglers 5 is the fifth instalment in the turn-based science-fiction space trading game series. Will you be a greedy trader, an ambitious fleet pilot or a ruthless pirate? Board enemy ships, manage factories, conquer star systems and forge your own galactic empire - ultimately, your actions will have an impact on a galactic scale.

Smugglers 5 V. 1.5:

- New feature: In a spaceport bar you can now meet a fellow who sells you an amnesia drug for 3 million credits. If you accept, you can redistribute all your skill points as you see fit.
- Balance change: The chance of successfully using a special skill during a special combat event has been rebalanced. For most skills it has been increased.
- Balance change: Chance of asteroid and mine fields doing damage has been decreased.
- Balance change: Effect of energy flux has been doubled. It now quadruplicates (!) the damage bonus from energy cage I or II.
- Balance change: During the special combat event "Ambush" the chance to use the confusion of the attack to escape has been reduced.

Smugglers 5: Invasion Now On Steam

In case you have missed it, Smugglers 5: Invasion is available on Steam since 16th October.

The Invasion expansion adds a new alien race with new ships, new skills, new star systems, an improved combat system, improvements to the game graphics including screen resolution and much more. There are significantly more stories to explore in each new system, and full combat carriers with bombers, interceptors, and escort vessels. With hundreds of different skills, many starting professions, and the ability to change the course of the war, Smugglers 5: Invasion is the turn based answer to every star captain's dream.

Smugglers 5: Invasion starts where the original game ended. After years of civil war, the Federation finally emerged victorious, crushing all rebel activity. The galaxy looked forward to a period of peace, a chance to repair the damage of a long and bitter war.

Then came the Jalkath, a new alien race. To the humans, they looked much like the tigers of Old Earth, and they soon proved themselves to be every bit as cunning and dangerous. The newcomers were swift and brutal in their assault, deploying terrifying weapons and subjugating entire systems before their victims even knew what was happening. The Federation has rallied a defense against the invaders, as both sides struggle for dominance.

Now, war has returned to the galaxy. For the right kind of captain, it’s a whole new chance for fame and fortune. Will you fight for the survival of your race? Trade and smuggle goods to make your fortune? Or play both sides against each other for your own profit?

This is a different scenario and does not replace the original Smugglers 5: Secession, which plays in a different timeline.

I picked it up thinking it would be phone esq type of a game, and it is. But, it has some surprising depth to the gameplay. Now, if only the dev would add in some abilities to adjust graphics to fit a regular computer monitor, it would be a nice little way to kill 20 minutes here or there.

This is retro rpg-strategy at it's best. Tons of text content. Six classes with their own skill tree with four possible factions (5th secret one). Career options. Combat is turn based.

All-in-all I give it 8/10. I would have liked to have seen more leveling options (once you hit Admiral or faction equivalent that's it). If you've picked your skills correctly though it turns into a game of "i'm bad ♥♥♥ and I want your solar system" style galactic conquest.

I tremendously enjoyed this game! I think it is one of the most underrated games on Steam. The series dates back to 2000 or 2001 and each game in the series has been more and more improved. It´s very polished (dev still making regular updates and listens to community) and has a great depth. I cannot understand some of the reviews here. I think they have been fooled by the easy accessibility and did not play long enough to get to the advanced features. In the base game you can fly everything from a fighter up to battleships. I don´t understand how one review can say they aren´t in the game. Also each profession has some unique skills, for example a trader can flee the battle and has special skills to defend and delay combat until reinforcements (which other game simulates reinforcements??) arrive or a pirate has special abilities focused on making sure exactly this doesn´t happen.

If you are looking for a very addictive 2D version of Elite, Pirates or Freelancer, don´t look no further. However if you prefer 3D or very good graphics, you have to look somewhere else.

I don´t want to write a long review, I want to go back playing! It´s a very polished game (except graphics). Kind of a 2D, turn-based blend of Pirates and Elite. There are a lot of different skills, some for example allow you to get away from combat (but at a cost, like dropping your cargo), other´s allow you to better defend yourself or even to board and capture other ships, pirate outposts or planets!

I bought this game on sale based on the really interesting sounding gameplay. Sadly, I'll never know if it lives up to that because it's nearly unplayable.

There are no video options at all. The screens are just centered on your native desktop resolution. This makes the main menu, which looks to be about 300x400 pixels, very small. The gameplay screen is a little better, probably 1024x768.

The tiny size of the graphics is exacerbated by really poor choices of text colors. Most text is gray on beige, very hard to pick out. Tutorial text is white on bright green, almost completely unreadable.

The framework for the gameplay I expected does seem to be present - one can buy and sell, do missions, travel around. But it's such hard work to just read the screen that it doesn't matter. I'd rather avoid the headache (literal as well as figurative).

I am going to keep my review in the style of a little "log book". I hope you like it. If you do, please upvote!

Okay, here is my "log book" report:

Hour 1:

Cons: Graphics look a bit overly simplistic, but I didn´t had a single crash. I found a small bug or two, but nothing really important. A few spelling mistakes.

Pro: When browsing the profession selection, I cannot remember when I felt such an excitement the last time. You can choose among a broad range of professions from trader to pirate. Each
one has different starting skills, a different skill tree depending on the character and this is even more modified depending on the faction you choose. That´s cool! You do not need to
play a guy too (although I did), but can choose to play a female protagonist.

With most professions (not all) you start with a small ship without jump engines. The next 30 minutes you can explore the starting system and try some easier missions in order to get the money to buy a bigger ship with engines capable of leaving the first star system. If you start as a fleet trader or officer, you already start with a bigger ship and can skip this first episode.

Hour 2:

Cons: see above.

Pro: This is fun. I´ve been raiding through the ranks (you get a uniform and can tag medals etc. on it) and got a destroyer class spaceship. I´ve hired a crew and now I am going to try boarding and capturing other ships! Yeeehay!

Hour 5:

Cons: see above.

Pro: I am trying to get a battleship, which appears to be the biggest ship you can get in the base game.

Hour 7:

Cons: see above.

Pro: Done. I have conquered my first star systems and I am about to finish the fleet officer career. Cannot wait to try playing as a pirate and conquer the galaxy all for myself!

(to be continued - still great ;) )

This game is exactly what you think it is. Its a space sim where u can be anything from a trader to a pirate. 4 different factions, politics. Buying and selling goods you name it. the combat system is smart and turn based, and its an open sandbox where you do what you want. Would reccomend very much. With the current sale price of 1$ its a steal!

10/10 have not had so much fun smuggling, pillaging and in general being a bad guy before (of course you could be a good guy too). Behind the simple visuals and the easy to learn rules and interface, there is a lot of content hidden. If you think this is a simple game, look again! This game is amazing!

It's a decent little game to pass the time, considering the price. While I wouldn't exactly call it an outstanding game by any stretch of the imagination, I would firmly place it in the category of: 'If you have 10 bucks to spare, some time to kill, and like strategy games with a sprinkling of story and RPG thrown in, why not?'.

It comes with a quick little tutorial to help you get started, which is nice. However I would still strongly recommend either reading or glancing through the simple manual as well, because there may be things that are of interest to you that you'd want to do and have no real idea about otherwise. Such as starting your own faction. That however is something that will take several hours and much dedication.

There are 4 factions that you can join and level up with, however if you don't join any you can go about doing what you want (minus missions) and still level up as a civilian. If you eventually join your ranking will carry over to your new faction, so at least you don't lose anything.

It's no surprise that virtually everything in the game revolves around money. The only things that don't are your own individual skills depending on which profession you choose - however note that it can take quite a while to level up and get new skills, so for some people the game might get a bit tedious, or even monotonous. You need to 'level up' 3 times before you get new skills - and some pretty big skills are on opposite ends of entire skill trees that require you to have prerequisites. So expect a lot of grinding.

If you're someone who likes games based upon their graphics - my suggestion is to move along. There won't be anything new or fancy here, and if you have a really high resolution you're going to be doing a fair amount of squinting. Otherwise you can make it full screen and squint again as everything gets stretched out. If you see something once in the game, you'll see it a thousand times.

Same for the sounds. The music will tend to cut out at various random intervals, but strangely enough I really only noticed it when it suddenly stopped. Otherwise it was fairly forgettable. Much the same for the sound effects.

There are a few instances of flavor text missing, usually in the 'quotes' area stating that this is an early access version even though it isn't. Also, if you're the one who tends to shudder every time you come across misspelled words or bad grammar in a game, then prepare to shudder a few times. Thankfully most of it is fine, but you'll notice a few spots here and there - and plenty of walls of text. Though considering the resolution I'm not really surprised.

All-in-all it's a fun little game to pass the time, or if you have that space rpg urge. It's 'just one more turn!' addicting for the first hour or two until you get the routine down. You might get to switch it up when you learn a new skill or get a new ship, or get a battle with a random event - but otherwise nothing major happens for the first large chunk of the game.

With enough dedication you can eventually reach the higher ranks and unlock more activities, but you'll have to be able to slog through a fair bit of early grinding, -especially- if you choose the civilian route.

My final score for this is a fairly decent but not great 6.5/10. It will keep you entertained for a while and will be worth it to those who are willing to put the time into it - assuming you can put up with old-fashioned graphics and sounds for quite a few hours.

For the rest of you who can't do that, I'd recommend waiting to see if it goes on sale later. At 10 USD it's still an iffy buy, but if it ever goes to 7 or less, I'd say grab it.

Oh I was expecting so much from this game, but at the same time, I had so many doubts if it would get boring quickly. After a discussion in the forums where the developer himself almost started a fight because he thought I should just try the game as it is already so cheap (???), my curiousness was bigger than my intelligence and I went on and bought the game.

Yeah, it was fun for about 1 hour... then it started to get repetitive. So it should cost around 0.99$. Yeah, there is SOOOO much you can do in the game, but it's mostly about semantics and limiting standard stuff. If you design a game where you can be a rogue, a warrior or a magician, but then make you select all your skills so that you can make a magician with rogue clothes, it's only semantics. Oh but wait, if we cut off one hand of a magician, then people will think he is different. No he is just less fun that way. That's almost what's happening in this game. Yes, you get a bigger ship if you work hard, and the game just changes all other things so that the gameplay stays the same. Yes, you can be a trader, a trader, a trader and a trader, and also a disabled trader (pirate).

And on a side note: when I went looking if the DLC would improve the game for me, I discovered that the developer has again been fighting on the forum, banning people who do not agree. Not that that should change your opinion on the game, but do you really want to support such a developer?

If you like to buy low and sell high. Then you like to play trading games like I do. I picked this game up after spending a few minutes with the demo. Since I have played close to 12 hours. The majority of that was playing the free trader. What I have found is the trade system is extremely weak. Once you spend a while in your starting system. As a free trader you start off in a fighter craft unable to warp out of said system. Profit comes slowly and the first warp ready corvette cost over 100 thousand credits. During this stage of the game profit per unit is anywhere from single digits to a 100 credits. However after you get a corvette and explore for a little while. You will find that certain systems produce Antimatter, Diamonds, and Super Ore. These systems are where you spend most of your time after wards. Buying those items and running to the closes invaded system. Where you can sell Antimatter for 1000 to 2000 profit per unit 600 or more for diamonds, and 150-200 profit for super ore. This allows for extremely easy progression and quite easily shows what this game lacks.

The main thing the game truly lacks is an assortment of ships. There are 4 classes fighters, corvettes, destroyers, and cruisers. Besides a few faction or class based starting, capital ships there are 2 or 3 options per level. With one per level with a decent cargo hold, as a trader I would have hope for more options. At the highest level ship you will have around a 2000 thousand unit cargo hold.

It isn't to small if all you do is trade. However as you level up you get the option of owning companies. Sadly it is utterly simplistic to my knowledge there is only two branches. Synthetics factories which can be upgraded to produce robotics then engines. This requires super ore and is the only other factory branch that I know of. Super ore factories can be upgraded to produce diamonds and antimatter. This branch of industries require robotics.

I would like to set up a production chain. Where I can produce super ore to ship to my robotic factories, then ship my robotics to an antimatter factory. There is no other way for you to ship your produced goods automatically. You are limited to automatic purchasing those required units in system or galaxy wide. This of course increases the cost of the factory. You can also automatically sell at a loss of 50 percent. You can of course ship the stuff to and from yourself. However this causes the final product antimatter to simply stock up while you resupply the other factories. After you stock them up enough to give you some time you will find you have already produced thousands of antimatter. Or in my case 10 thousand antimatter so as you can see a ship with cargo capacity of around 2k will make a killing with all that antimatter. However I have a stockpile of antimatter growing by the week. Once you tack on travel time to and from contested systems. Which can take months your stockpile has grown, and the robotics and super ore factories are in need of supervision. In the end it is just easier to automate the robotic and antimatter factories and closing the super ore one. They will operate making you a little profit unless the system is under attack. Where as if it had been flushed out and you could ship produced goods to and from systems automatically. And had access to capital sized freighters you could simply set around all day making billions.

So while the trading is fun it is short lived and the trader end game of companies is shallow at best. I would still consider this game worth the price of admission.

Initially I liked this game quite a bit. I'm a sucker for space exploration games and I really like building up my ship as I progressed through the game. The interface is a bit of a mess however. Some buttons launch in game popups like you'd expect while others launch sperarate executables which overlay your game. It looks like they set out making a browser game, but at some point decided to do something different.

I had quite a bit of fun early on in the game, but it didn't take long until I ran into a staggering lack of content. The big ships they talk about in the menus are actually not in the game. Carriers and other large ships which the game says you need to have your own fleet can't be bought as far as I can tell. So you get to a point where you can't really progress any further.

The starmap is very limited. I don't see why there couldn't be many, many more star systems and different types of planets. The amount of weapons and ship upgrades are also very limited and are mostly the same across all ships. There is virtually no point in trading past the first hour or so of the game. The combat system is ok, but gets extremely repetitive. There doesn't seem to be an endgame of any kind. There are even menu items not in use and place holder text which calls this an early access game. I could go on, but the point should be clear.

What makes it even worse is that as you try to close the game the developer advertises an expansion for the game which can only be bought through their website. Which apparantly is a standalone game with a lot of the missing features this game looks like it was supposed to have. They even have additional DLC on top of that thing. I looked at their website and if you try to buy the game they add on all the previous games in the series without asking, try to push DLC and have some sort of "download premium" service which lets you download the game whenever you want for extra cash. These are practices I thought we had put behind us years ago.

To sum it up: Stay away from this one. It is an unfinished buggy mess and not the latest version of this game. The developer are using some rather dishonest tactics to push this game on you despite it being an inferor version of a probably equally buggy mess.

Smuggler's 5 is a broken, unpolished mess. About a third of the tooltips are missing quotes and instead say "early release version." This game adds very little from the previous iterations. The combat is singularly unthrilling, the clunky UI could have been done better by a freshman taking a class in flash. Smugglers 5is not ENTIERLY without charm; The RPG elements and the reward system is cool. I like the idea of earning medals and awards that show up on the character's lapel. The diversity of available ships and the choose your own adventure elements are a fun diversion from the rest of the wreckage that was slapped together to build this rubbish. Im a sucker for ANY 4xer which is why I bought it, but at the end of the day I would have had an exponentially better time playing Mater of Orion, which makes no sense seeing that MOO is over 20 years than this game.

Somewhere between Freelancer and FTL.
However, this is most definitely not for the graphic-orientated, as its almost closer to a text-based game than, say, X3.

As for how the game actually plays its got the standard roles you can fulfill (smuggler, trader, bounty hunter, pirate, naval officer etc). You essentially go from sector to sector either trading or doing various missions or just hunting down prey. Then you use that money to upgrade your ship/buy a bigger a ship until you're big enough to help with your faction's war effort...
Or potentially even set up your own faction. I'm looking forward to becoming a pirate king in my game...

Definitely worth the price tag, if anything because it will give you hours of low stress, no-reactions-required gaming - ideal if you like to watch TV as you game!

This is a fun mini-4x/Elite hybrid game that is, without a doubt, worth the $$ I spent on it. It is rough and unpolished in some areas, but there is a lot of good gameplay to be had. I would highly recommend this game if you are looking for something mildly engrossing and fun while you are awaiting the "next big game" to come out. This game has a lot of heart and its fun for what it is. This is turn-based strategy goodness without the bells and whistles.

An interesting game that blends several genre's and play styles into a hodgepodge spacefaring venture that actually works.

It has combat, empire/skill building, trading, piracy, exploration, ship building, owning planets or factories, and other gaming playstyles that can be done independently or in any combination the player wishes.

With it being turn-based it all happens as fast or as slowly as the player is most comfortable with, so there's a lot of flexibility to tune and play the game as one wishes.

All in all, the bang is quite worth the bucks.

Even at the current discounted price of $3.39 I would not recommend buying this game. If it didn't have the bugs, and was half that price I normally would say it would be a good buy. But, go read the forum and see who you would be giving your money to, and make an informed decision.
